Row House

“Food here is amazing, atmosphere is Harlem swanky but, not stuffy at all.”

“The pig in a blanket was tasty, but the carbonara dumplings were GREAT – deliciously crisp on the outside, creamy goodness on the inside.”

“I didn't have dessert (my meal left me left me pretty stuffed) but the red velvet ice cream sandwiches were a hit with the guests in our party.”

  1. "Where should we go?"
"Well, there's. Harlem Tavern, you like that place…."
    "Ehhhh…"

I'll make a disclaimer, I do LOVE the Harlem Tavern.  But I'm always waiting for one other comparable choice to pop up in this neck of the woods, so phone convos don't end with "I guess we'll go to the Harlem tavern."

The whitewashed corner this place sits on looks appropriately "classy, chic, chill" (as another yelper mentioned,) & inside its a little bit neighborhoodly spot by way of TVs showing the game over the bar, and the fact that the manager seemed to recognize and come talk to my friend who lives nearby and was there for the third time that week.  Its also a bit club-by by way of the itty bitty hostess and very large bouncer at hostess stand, and waiter telling the girls sitting next to us to stick around and head to the lounge downstairs.

It's also, of course, a small plates (and a few large plates) new american cuisine restaurant, chicly decorated with red blue and green glass bottles.  The food was good; I had Mac and cheese and my friend had scallops. The Mac and cheese was cheesy and had a nice crust on top – it was the sort of place where I did ask for a bottle of hot sauce cuz the Mac and cheese needed a little more heat.

So  I liked this place better for atmosphere and the drink ("mellow feeling ") I had than the food. That said, there was a red velvet ice cream sandwich it took all my will power not to order. Those same "stay for the club downstairs, ladies" girls next to us ordered it and it looked amazing.

And any Mac and cheese can always use a side of hot sauce IMO anyhow.

  2. Had a wonderful dinner here with a group of colleagues. The ambience is great- chic, modern, and comfortable. We purchased a single small plate each and a few large plates to share. The food served here is small plates/tapas style and is very tasty. I highly recommend the chicken and short ribs on the shareable menu and the Mac n cheese on the single plate section. The food can take a while to come out so order a small plate if you're starving and waiting on a larger dish. The service was great-we had the cutest waitress whose name I can't remember but we later found out is also an actress. She gave good recommendations for our party of 8 and was pretty spot on. I would definitely return!

  3. I just, I just don't know. I have been to this place several times and it is hit or miss.

Their cocktails are great. I don't think I've ever had anything bad to say about them. Mac n cheese is absolutely delicious. I have had the grilled cheese twice. First time I knew I would hold the bacon the second time, but would order again. The second time I got their grilled cheese I'm pretty sure it made me sick. Can't tell if the dripping oil didn't sit right with my tummy or if the cheese was bad. Something had me sharing my lunch with a bucket (tmi sorry).

I love that they offer a free drink with brunch though I think that's become standard. They have outside seating but the tables are aluminum. My boyfriend and I sat outside on a hot day with our napkins to protect our elbows. They're black so they heat up extra hot. Not so smart for outside tables.

The service is again either good or bad. You might feel completely neglected or like you're the only person in the house. If I walk by and they aren't busy I'll drop in with my fingers and toes crossed

  4. Great drinks, and cool space, I also had an app that was really good. This is a good stop right off the C train.

  5. We headed over to Row House as our second "Sunday Funday" stop for more drinks/desserts (had brunch at Barawine). Gareth, the owner, went out of his way to ensure that we felt comfortable and were well taken care of. We tried the fries, nutella fench toast, and a bunch of other goodies.

My experience was positive overall and I'm eager to return for a meal in the near future.

  6. A short distance behind them and a long way to go BUT it's promising!
I've been here several times and there are many consistency that are totally worth the visit.
The first one, hands down, is the ambiance and vibe. Now, that being said, Harlemites bring the A-game anywhere they go so this has little to do with the actual restaurant because well. . . . that's just how we roll: classy, chic, chill.  The other half is the design: simple, modern with a slight vintage flair.

Service is on point, attentive, pleasant, just social enough and all are easy on the eyes. . . yea I said it!  Hey I didn't say I'd deduct points for not being a 7+, but we do eat with our eyes, after all.  All right enough of that.

Now, you want to know about the food?  It's not worth writing home about but maybe it's enough to write an email to someone.
Fries, Burrata, Burger, Ribs, Steak ALL seriously delicious.  The Brussels Sprouts and Lobster Croquettes. . . NO….just say NO!  The cocktails on the other hand. . . I'm seriously about 'bout it.

Moral of the story:  Go and try it, you'll have a good time.  It's for a date, family or friends getting together or just hitting up the bar solo. . . ya, I'm not too proud!

  7. I really wanted to like this place. I met a friend here for lunch on a Friday afternoon. The restaurant is large and remarkably NOT cramped; it was refreshing to eat at a dining establishment in Manhattan that hadn't packed as many tables into the space as possible. It made for a friendly, relaxed atmosphere that I really appreciated.

They let me bring in my iced coffee from Caféine next door (I stopped there to get a caffeine fix when my friend was running a few minutes late). So that was nice of them.

I ordered the steak sandwich, which sadly turned out to be utterly lackluster. I can only describe the texture of the sandwich as "gummy" — the meat was gummy and the mushrooms on it were also gummy. Bleh! At least the bread and cheese were good?

Speaking of bread and cheese, my friend ordered the grilled cheese and it was SO good! She noticed I wasn't enjoying my food all that much so luckily she offered me some of her grilled cheese. Wish I'd ordered that instead!

There is a $2 upcharge for fries (vs house greens), but the side of fries is quite large and I couldn't finish them all. Soda refills are $1/each and my friend (who ordered soda) wasn't warned about that so that was kind of a bummer as well.

I'd give this place another shot but would definitely order something else next time.

  8. New-ish casual dining spot in Harlem. Went here a week ago for a group event. Packed house on a Monday night for dinner. Really a fan of their clean all-white decor with brick walls. Lots of room here. There is a choice of seated tables as well as the bar area in the middle where you can stand or sit a stool around the table. The wait staff was friendly and attentive.

I had several glasses of their winter sangria. It also helped that it was served in huge (I mean real) wine glasses! People around me seemed to also enjoy their drinks. As for food, they had a variable menu which is plus. I chose to go with the seared sea scallops while others had the stuffed mushrooms and Kale salad.  My scallops were wonderful but I personally thought they could have given me a better portion. It came with a tiny side of sweet corn and a smear of what looked grits. It was an entree not an appetizer. So that kinda underwhelmed me. It's a good thing I wasn't super hungry.

5 stars for ambiance and service
4 stars for the bar staff and drinks
3.5-4 stars for the food. Good presentation and taste, small portion.

Still think they need to work out some kinks in their kitchen. But I would certainly come back for a drinks and to try other dishes.
