We hit up this little spot because it was conveniently located in our terminal and we had an hour or so before our flight. It was breakfast time, so we went for eggs…only thing is, the only option is three eggs scrambled, or a few types of omelets. That's right, no sunny-side up, no over-easy…service was good however and the food came quickly, but wasn't really up to par. They do have a to-go option though. Seems like people had more luck with burgers and lunch/dinner!
Quick, cheap, and simple, but I would try another place. The menu here is extremely limited. Probably no more than 20 items of which half are burgers. That alone loses the right to be classified as a Diner in Jersey.
Ruby's has the exterior of a diner, but it's far from a real diner, it's more like a fast food joint.
Service was good, but nothing extraordinary. To be expected, so this saved a one star rating. The garden salad lack the amount of vegetables to be considered a garden salad, and the turkey burger was in one word: bland.
Okay so I read the reviews and was not keen on eating here but we decided to try it. Should have gone with my gut! Literally!
Both ordered the bacon cheeseburger. One with garlic fries and one with Cajun fries. Chocolate milkshake and a water. Food came out incredibly fast. My burger was okay for the first few bites then got 2 big pieces of gristle so that turned me off. My fries were crispy which I like but just had done warm crushed garlic poured over it. The Cajun ones were better but super spicy. The best part of the meal was the chocolate shake as it was thick and very good chocolate but I just had one taste of it. From the time we sat down until we got our check was 17 minutes. Too fast even for an airport.
Most people who take time to sit down for a meal at an airport are usually not pressed for time.
Folks check out other options for a meal as we found lots of places walking to our gate. And most of all trust the YELPER reviews unlike stupid me!!! Reviews from YELPERS are meant to be used. I have got to get better with this!
We just came off an 8 hour flight and had 4 hours to wait for our connecting flight. We walked by thinking there might be something better than diner food down the way, but there wasn't so we came back. Friendly workers. Our server was great! Polite and courteous. The food came out quickly and I guess the object is to turn the tables fast.
I ordered the club sandwich which came out on a soft roll. It was decent. The partner had a bacon cheeseburger and said it was good, even though there was too much mayo. Both came with crispy fries, though some were a little old. Overall, a decent meal for being at the airport.
She: This doesn't taste like swiss cheese
He: I can assure you it is
She: I've had swiss cheese burgers before and this doesn't taste right
Give me an effing break! You're at a diner in an airport not at some gourmet shi-shi restaurant. Then the manager came out. Even told her they'd bring out the packaging to prove to her. Some people are dumb!
If you are in EWR and looking for a tasty burger, served in a friendly environment, quickly, you're out of luck. Well that is to say, you're out of luck if you stop in at Ruby's.
I ordered just that. A bacon Cheeseburger, with Cajun Fries and lemonade. My server was the surliest person in the place. He words were more like grunts and he only supplemented these with vague pointing gestures.
My Medium Rare burger was well done, the cajun fries, regular fries unevenly seasoned with store brand cajun seasoning after cooking. The eating experience was even weirder. With my first bite into the burger it virtually exploded. I wish I had taken a photo of the bun, It looks like the glaciers in the arctic after it breaks up like they show on discovery channel. I reasoned that this was due to the abundance of lettuce versus the small meat patty.
To make matters worse, the table I was seated at was next to the POS station. The wait staff when not otherwise busy hangs out here, a little more than arms length away and yucks it up. The chatter covers multiple languages and topics and due to the proximity you can't escape it.
The only positive I have about Ruby's is that the surly server did refill my lemonade without me asking. So if this is the only redeeming quality you need in a diner, Ruby's is the place for you!!

Reasoning: I would never dine there again and would certainly tell people to do the same. I went to this place because it seemed that it was always packed every week when I fly in/out Newark. Well, I wanted to try this place out and the service was actually quite good – and the food was too until I threw it up later on and seeing as that was the only thing I ate that evening – I knew it was them and I was pissed. It was some old grease that they were using and what was worse I called management and told them that I wanted my card reversed of the charges.
Think about this – for me to REVERSE charges on a Corporate Card – your food has to be pretty shitty. Anyways, I was then told by the manager that NOBODY calls back to tell them their food was bad and I told this manager that it was probably because they didn't want to either A) deal with you or B) still sick from the food and don't have the time. I emphasized that while service was great – BAD FOOD does not SUBSTITUTE for good service. Then the manager told me that maybe I had a 'bug" and I asked him if he thought I was born yesterday. I then told him of my frequent travel and that I know the difference between a stomach bug and bad food. And in better terms asked him 'who the hell does he think I am – I travel too much for to be listening to this sh*t'. He then went ahead and reversed the charge. That was nice of him after he heard what I had to say. I will not recommend this place.
My chili cheese fries were excellent, with large chunks of tender beef (not ground). My wife's hamburger was pretty bad, but they took it off the bill when we complained. Excellent Oreo shake. The place is expensive, Manhattan level prices. 13 for a burger and 8 for a shake.
This place is a solid 2 stars. Food is meh and customer service is what you would expect at 5AM so no complaints there. Next time you're at EWK walk around a bit to see what they have or not. If you're lucky you might find something worthy of more than 2 stars but chances are you won't. At 5AM before a long flight, food is food. #firstworldproblems
