After dinner in the area, we wanted something sweet and savory. Thanks to Yelp, we found this place for some herbal tea and TRES LECHE! Fresh, flavorful, very moist ( as it should be) yet not soggy. Cute little restaurant with friendly service. Sat by the window and watched the Upper east side walk by. After we came, it got busy. Would come back to try the food. Tres Leche here is Delish!
Decent tacos! I ordered delivery from this place a couple nights ago – two al pastor tacos and a tres leches cake. Given the price of the tacos ($3+), although looking back I should have realized given we're in NYC, I assumed they'd be slightly bigger than traditional tacos, hence my only ordering two. Two tacos were definitely not enough as I was still pretty hungry afterwards. The tres leches cake did not seem fresh and homemade, but rather bought at a supermarket. I appreciated the al pastor and its flavorful seasoning and might order from here again when I'm craving expensive, tiny tacos.
This is our go-to Mexican place in the neighborhood. It's slightly out of the way, but worth the trek.
PROS:
-Food: always fresh and well prepared
-Customer service: I've only had one bad order, via delivery, and I received two calls from the manager and new food in 20 minutes.
-Accessibility (In this city, this is always a consideration). This place is easy to get into. I've never had to wait.
-Good sangria. I think they have a happy hour special of $4 glasses.
-Quick, hot, well packaged delivery
CON:
No liquor (they do have beer/wine) license, therefore no margaritas!
This small Mexican place only has a couple tables inside. The food is authentic and is reasonably priced, but it ended up being disappointing for me. Their portions are very small! Their tortas were much smaller than the ones I am used to getting. The pieces of bread they used are so small, so as a result the sandwich itself is small. The piece of meat in the the steak torta and also the chorizo torta were also very stingy. The steak was a very, very thin cut – probably only a quarter inch thick. The food tastes fine, but I would avoid this place, unless you want to leave hungry. I wish I had gone to one of the Mexican places just north of here in Spanish Harlem instead.
Totally passable but not worth going out of your way for. No free chips and salsa (is that just a Detroit thing)? I order chips and guacamole which were pretty good after I dumped salsa picquete in them. The shrimp with chipotle was pretty lame. It consisted of 6 shrimp in a watery pool
of chipotle sauce and a side of beans and rice.
Eh. Bf and his roomie call this their kitchen because they live incredibly close by. They like it. The tacos do seem decent, but I am unsure if I would return judging by the taco salad (chicken) I had for yesterday's lunch. Mind you, bf says the burritos are good, and his roomie likes the tacos. But, the taco salad actually didn't seem very authentic at all. Nothing compared to my all time favorite: Pinche in Nolita.
I walked in at 11am on a random weekday- no one was there. I mean, yes it's early for lunch but have someone at the counter… I had to call into the kitchen a few times. But finally, after I ordered my food, it came out decently fast enough. Despite some reviews on here, the manager lady wasn't rude. The only weird thing she did was put the seltzer I took as part of my lunch special, back into the fridge that I took out myself.. then gave it back to me. Strange. As if "she" had to open the door or something..
The salad plus seltz was about $8 – lunch special.
Anyway. Onto the food. The taco salad, with chicken (which was long, soft pieces of flatten chicken- un Mexican like as it wasn't diced) came with refried beans (meh), not so fresh iceberg lettuce, peppers, onion, tomato.. and sour cream and salsa ( all fine) on the side. Apparently their guac is really good but I didn't get an option for that. It came on a taco shell, which I ate half of.
It was very mediocre. I would not come back; bf lives close by so that was a big draw but honestly, I prefer Chipotle.
I loves me a good lunch special! Ok I work in the hood so this review is for lunch specials only. The steak taco salad is so good! Tortilla bowl filled with mexican rice, refried beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, sour cream, peppers, onions, and a nice portion of steak (I think flank steak). Must add guac for $1. Salsa and chips are included with lunch special. Also have had chicken enchiladas verde, also good. With a soda my bill with tax and tip is usually $12. 😉
i want to like it here because it's so close to my apartment, but it just wasn't anything special. i ordered a sangria, guacamole and a steak quesadilla and didn't feel there was much taste going on. the restaurant has an "a" health rating and the staff is super nice, but it left me underwhelmed. that being said, i would go back to give them another try. i like canyon road in the e. 70's far better.
