  1. I have a usual spot I like to go to for Colombian food in this neighborhood but for the heck of it decided to see if I could branch out and find another good spot…sadly my search continues…

Started the evening with a nice ice cold glass of Colombiana and really enjoyed their Tostones with Guacamole app (though not really a Colombian dish but I digress…) The tostones were flattend out to a thin wafer almost and beautifully crisped and fried.  The guac, we asked for spicy but was very mild but still helped to cut through the richness of the fried tostone.  Also ordered their Arepa conQueso and that was also toasted into a nice gold brown and not to a burnt crisp which I have experienced in the past.  So 2 dishes in and we were excited for the main entrees

Dinner sadly went a bit south from there.  Ordered the Bistek Encebollado and the Plato Tipica with steak.  The steaks in both dishes as well as the fried pork belly tasted like they were cooked in really old cold oil.  It it was not good.  The slick taste of skunky oil left in your mouth was not appetizing at all.  The only saving grace was that the maduros, rice and beans were very good.

The space is open and inviting and the staff was very accommodating and nice too.

Onward to find the next best Colombian spot!

  2. A really good home style restaurant, which is better organized than many other Colombian places in this area. We had bistec a caballo and salteado mixto. Both are very well seasoned and in large portion. They also offer free soups. The waitresses are friendly and speak good English.

  3. A straightforward, simple Colombian spot right on Queens Boulevard. Super layback atmosphere and you are there for food. The menu is very clear cut as they label sections according to breakfast, meat, fish, appetizers, and specials. And no, you may not order any of their dishes on their special menu beyond that time frame. A bit of a turnoff but understandable.

Appetizers Combo came with rice and beans, avocado, tostones, sweet plaintain, and fried pork skins. Combo was really meant to be served on a side but I ate it as a meal and was pretty satisfied with it. Rice and beans was of course, a delicious combination. Lots of beans present and I really had to squeeze that bean sauce out! Fried pork skins was actually interesting to me. Deep fried in a golden brown color and lightly salted, it was quite tasty but I had to limit myself for I was already hearing my arteries clogging! Just kidding.

Sea bass with rice and salad was exceptionally delicious. The fish was well-seasoned with salt, parsley, pepper, and a bit of garlic. The fish meat was really soft too. This is a balanced meal in one plate.

A decent spot if you want take-out or just a quick meal. They have a variety of items on the menu but not everything is available all the time, which bugs me. Yes, there are way better spots out there.
