Sabor Peruano truly defines the definition of great Peruvian food at an affordable price. Prior to coming here, I had always ordered rotisserie chicken when visiting the Peruvian restaurant close to my home but decided to mix it up here. As per the recommendation of my buddy, I ordered the bistec a lo pobre which is a massive amount of food consisting of steak, fried eggs, rice, plantains, and french fries. I should probably stop typing now as that last sentence should be enough for you to stop what you are doing and drive to Sabor immediately but for those still reading, I will go on. I will paraphrase what Louis CK said about the Cinnabon when I say, it doesn't matter what gender you are; when you are eating this plate full of food, you are a man in the moment. This dish alone is easily enough food for 2-3 people so be sure to come with an appetite.
Overall, the prices are reasonable, the menu is large, and the quality of food is top notch. It can get a bit tight in here during lunch, so be sure to call ahead when you're coming with a large group. We've called ahead a couple times, yet still had to wait about 15 minutes for our food once we arrived. It's no fun waiting but be assured that once your food comes out, you will be eating like a king.
Given the natural fusion of Asian and Hispanic flavors, Peruvian food could be termed exotic but the cooking at this place is very home style! It's like meeting a gorgeous Miss Universe pageant winner only to discover that she's simple and down to earth. Vague analogy, but you get the point.
We were attending a close friend's graduation at UCPAC and by the time we were done, our party of 8 was so starving that the hole in the wall across the street seemed like a convenient call for dinner.
We ordered a mix of entrees and sides that included:
* Arroz Con Mariscos O Camarones (a Peruvian take on Paella)
* Pargo Rojo Frito (Fried Red Snapper – Market Price)
* Tallarin a la Huancaina Con Bistec (Spaghetti in Cheese Sauce with Steak)
* Bistec a la Pobre (Steak and Eggs served with Rice and Yuca fritters)
* Beef Lomo Saltado (Beef, Potato Fries, Onions, Tomatoes sautéed and served with Rice)
* Arroz Chaufa Especial (Mixed Fried Rice)
* Tostones
* Yuca
The entire meal was scrumptious and none of us had any reservations on how memorably delicious the meal was.
The Peruvian Aji-Verde sauce (the green one) has serious addiction potential and we were pouring copious amounts of it on Tostones and Yuca fries in particular. It goes well with anything deep fried.
Would definitely recommend the Peruvian-Paella, any of the Chaufa or the Lomo Saltado if you're trying Peruvian for the first time as you can sample a good mix of seafood, Peruvian-style fried rice and sautéed meat entrees. Service is very courteous and seating basic but functional.
We were so impressed that we returned with family around V-Day weekend. The second time around the Lomo Saltado was a bit salty but everything else was amazing.
Highly recommend this family run restaurant in Union County.
Peruvian food never disappoint me and this place is no exception.
I was in the area on business and specifically looking for either Columbian or Peruvian food, and this place came up on Yelp search.
Street parking only, it was $0.50 per hour. Meter wouldn't take more than $0.50 at a time.
Staff and most customers spoke Spanish. Staff speaks fluent English to us. When we arrived, there was only another customer, but this place became busy while we were waiting for food. Food took longer than other local customers came later than us. Perhaps some food takes longer to cook.
Really loved my food served here. Great flavor, really enjoyed the sauce. Portion size is huge. After I ate about a half, I couldn't eat anymore. Too bad I didn't live near there. I would have taken leftover food to go if I did.
The East Coast introduced me to this wonderful cuisine known as Peruvian food. And I love it! The best thing is that there are not just one, but two of them near where I live, and I couldn't be happier =)
I love all their seafood dishes! Period. Top of my list includes ceviche, seafood chowder, seafood fried rice and all other soups. The fish they use in their ceviche is so fresh, and the lime juice marinate just adds the refreshing touch to the dish. There's potato on the side, I wish there's more potato or rice or some other carbohydrate equivalent. It's a huge portion of fish with a little side. Not complaining about the fish portion though, it's amazing!
The seafood broth they use to make their seafood chowder is amazingly rich in flavor. Not added flavor but seafood flavor. Love the combination of shrimps, mussels, crabs and scallops in the soup. It's doubly good when taken with a side of rice. One small thing is there's also a whole lot of cheese inside, which tends to make the soup too rich for my taste. My friends love it just the same, cheese or not, but I tend to avoid the cheese.
Who can forget the green sauce?? It's amazing and goes with everything, especially the rice dishes. It has that spicy kick and cilantro flavor which I totally love. Just makes everything which is already good even better =)
What draws me back is that they use really fresh seafood in their dishes. I kid you not. In fact, the seafood they use is even fresher than the seafood some of the restaurants in Boston use!
The wait times for dine in are usually long. I think that's because they are preparing your food fresh, and also they have huge take-out orders. The number of times I have been there, business for take-out has always been good. They sell volumes of food ~~ If you're getting take-out best recommendation is to call ahead to place your order, saves a fair bit of waiting time in the restaurant. Not sure if the call ahead option is available for dine-in, or why we haven't asked them about it all those times we were there, it will be great if it is!
I had bookmarked Sabor Peruano a long time ago, so when the opportunity presented itself to eat there, I took it!
The restaurant itself is quite small with only 7 tables inside. You could tell the clientele was local, ranging from the single guy coming off of work, to the couple having a date dinner to the family night out.
We arrived with a bottle of wine and something had told me to bring an opener as well and I'm glad I did. The super pleasant waiter came by with 2 regular drinking glasses (hey, I ain't fancy. A solo cup would have sufficed) but no opener.
I ended up ordering the Bistec a la Pobre (poor man's steak) and my significant other ordered a steak that came with a side of spinach pasta. My steak comes topped with 2 fried eggs, over rice and comes with fries. Double carbs! Double zzzz…. My only complaint was the eggs were cooked over well done and I would have preferred a runny yolk. No biggie, now I know for the next time.
People, come with appetites because these plates are friggen MONSTER. The fat girl inside of me pretty much clawed her way out and ate the entire plate. The waiter also comes with 2 different sauces, one hot, the other not and it just made the meal even better.
Sooooo reasonably priced too, what a great place to come for a great meal at an even greater price.
It has been a long time since I've wanted to give a place a 5. This place is a 5ish…I think it just needs a liquor license and more space. The prices are a little up there, but for what you get? They could get away with being even higher.
I went once, and then came back the next 3 days. What does that tell you? Huh? I can't hear you. Speak up…I can't hear you over how ****ing awesome the food is here.
Look at the pictures I posted. Look at them. Now look at your stomach. Back at the pictures. Back to your stomach. Now look at your car keys.
Bye.
