Street meat. What's not to love? No matter the time of day, the temperature, or my mood, I found that inserting a hot dog or piece of Italian sausage on flatbread through the large orifice in my face was a satisfying moment, a thing of beauty. I can thank the many Sabrett food stands that are peppered throughout NYC for that.
Specifically, I want to highlight the colorful little fellow at the South Street Seaport who made his Italian sausages with such enthusiasm, pride, and efficiency that he managed to make me smile, pause and appreciate humanity, a subject that I find so disenchanting to think about at times. It's hard-working individuals such as these that make NYC and the rest of the world tick.
I think if there is any food to describe NYC it would have to be street meat. I mean, gosh, it's the ultimate food of convenience in such a fast-paced atmosphere. While it's not gourmet, and certainly not the healthiest, it gets the job done. Yes, the wiener is New York personified.
I'm going to make this quick. Cost for a hotdog is $3. They're really small, taste like Vienna sausages, and the bun is soggy. The only reason for 3 stars was the incredible service. The hotdog artist took my money, was appreciative about his tip, and gave me my dog. Awesome Sauce!!
Overall, I recommend Sabrett's if you're in a rush, craving a hotdog with almost no flavor, and have $3 to throw away.
