No frills Vietnamese place right in the heart of Macdougal. This joint is pretty busy, but the turn is pretty quick and I got seated in less than 5 minutes.
The menu is pretty small and concise. You have choices of noodles, sandwiches, and other usual Vietnamese dishes.
Ordered the salad with grilled chicken and pork chop. It was really fresh and the chicken was very tender. On top of that, the price was extremely decent.
Would definitely be coming back whenever I'm in the area.
had my first bahn mi experience here yesterday, so im not about to size this up or compare. but what i will say is that these are some tasty, tasty sandwiches. the bread–perfect combination of crispy exterior and dough inside. the filling–the ss classic (just 5 buck. nice.) and the peking duck were very different flavors, but both superb. service was very fast paced. great first meal as a soho resident, now time to go back and try the spicy brisket.
finally got to try this place out because the birthday girl wanted some delicious viet food. we came to the right place because everything we had was yummy. even my Colombian friend who is super picky and never had Vietnamese good before loved his grilled chicken banh mi.
things we ordered were: spring rolls, summer rolls, mango & papaya salad, spicy S.S special, Saigon shack pho, Grilled lemongrass chicken banh mi, S.S classic banh mi, sweet potato fries, grilled pork chop with shrimp & spring rolls over rice and a vegetarian over vermicelli.
everything was tasty except my vegetarian friend wasn't too fond of her vegetarian vermicelli and my friend thought the classic banh mi was lacking meat. also the summer rolls were stick to each other and it was hard to get off the other ones shout almost ripping it and having it falling apart.
I'm definitely coming back to try other dishes but not on a hot summer day with a big group again. We were a party of 6 and had to squish into a small communal table with 5 others already sitting there. Also the AC was so weak. Everyone even the workers were sweating so much. It's an open kitchen and the space is small.
Decent Vietnamese food, but not the best I've ever tasted. Got summer rolls and beef pho. Summer rolls weren't bad, but they could use some more herbs because even with the peanut sauce, they were quite bland. The beef pho was also a little bland. Like the rolls, it wasn't bad or anything, but I don't think it had enough star anise in it. The beef itself was tough, didn't enjoy that.
Amazing, inexpensive Vietnamese food. I had the Vietnamese iced coffee (which was too sweet for me, but I downed it anyway), banh mi, sweet potato fries and summer rolls. Also tried my friend's salad with chicken. Everything was awesome and I hope you're reading this while en route to the place.
Came here for the pork bahn mi! I'm from Cali and have eaten a bunch of bahn mi sandwiches in my life time. I'm not used to paying over $6 for a sandwich but that's nyc for you!
The sandwich was good. Not the best I've had but decent. It was surprisingly filling and the meat was full of flavor. I wish the bread was toasted a little more but maybe next time I'll request if they could do so. I here this is a spot for pho so maybe I'll come for that one day too!
No frills restaurant with excellent food and prices of a street vendor! Food is great, service is super nice and fast. Worth trekking out of your way to the ATM (cash only).
Hip spot for a Vietnamese sandwich, or pho (which I didn't try). Sandwiches are great, though at a premium. Hole in the wall places in Chinatown are much cheaper and probably similar taste. Lines can get crazy, so go early or at an off hour. Cash only!
