Both good and bad qualities to this restaurant. As others have said, the service is not good. The waitress was very pleasant…. BUT it takes an extraordinarily long time to get your food (even when the restaurant is empty)!!!! Also, the pita they brought to nibble on was somewhat stale and they didn't even have olive oil on the table or anything to dip it in!
However, when the food did arrive, the chicken ouzi was absolutely delicious. It was flavored perfectly and i couldn't stop eating. I think it should be served with some sort of green vegetable, however, as it is just a pastry filled with spiced rice and chicken. Something healthy on the side would add a lot to the dish. The pomegranate sangria was also strong and yummy.
Stopped by for lunch on a quiet Monday. Only a few tables occupied – one server on shift. Décor is rather pretty but looks dated. Some of the tables have ornate decorations a la Morocco. Other tables had white linens. Linen napkins. No background music at lunch today..
I had the beef tagine which seemed OK to me, served on a regular plate rather than in a traditional tagine dish. Came with a side of plain couscous as you might expect. The entrees come with a choice of soup or salad – I had the Lentil soup which was fair As a lunch special, it was only $12.00.
Add complaint here :: my guess is that in Morocco tagine's are made with lamb or maybe chicken. So a beef tagine is less than authentic – even if it tastes OK. I googled beef tagine's which seem to be popular in Britain. I have had better tagines at Barbe's on 36th Street.
Love this place! Food is made with love and the ambiance transports you to a distant land. Can't wait to return. 🙂
So-so Middle Eastern restaurant in Greenwich Village is a very nice place to come. The dining room is very spacious and well decorated. The food was pretty mediocre. The curry was a little bland but the coriander dishes were more flavorful. Service was a bit cold but prices were cheap. I'll come back and give it another try.
An update to my review below: I recently checked my credit card statement to find that the restaurant overcharged me by a few dollars (I had a copy of my receipt and what they charged was not what I signed for, taking tip into account). I'd like to think that it was a careless error and not done purposely… regardless, this lowers my rating for them!
Couldn't decide whether to give this 3 or 4 stars… the food was quite good. The falafel was piping hot and interestingly was covered with sesame. The kibbee (deep-fried goodness stuffed with ground lamb, spices, and nuts) was delicious. The babaganonouj was fresh and was served with warm pita. And the lamb macloubee (tender lamb simmered with tomato sauce and layered with eggplant and rice) was fantastic.
I also loved the atmosphere- ceramic tile tables, dark/cozy lighting, middle eastern decor… and the service was actually fairly good (unlike in some of the other reviews!)
My only hesitancy in giving Salam 4 (instead of 3) stars is the pricing- felt like the entrees were a bit on the expensive side for what they were!
Went there for lunch yesterday, and as a few others mentioned, the place was pretty much empty except for us (a few people came in for "to go" orders). I cannot, for the life of me, imagine why it wasn't packed.
The lunch specials were made of fresh, delicious ingredients — we both did the combination plates; I had a salad with their hummus which, as others have mentioned, was excellent; probably the best hummus I've ever had. The smartest thing I did, however, was get a side of chicken to add to my salad; holy smokes, was that delicious! My friend had falafel and grape leaves with her salad and enjoyed both.
I definitely plan to return to try their dinner menu. But for an affordable, delicious lunch, I really recommend this place. Oh, and on your way of, pick up a pack of Altoids because, well, garlic…
The waiter seated us at the best table in the dining room, a round table corner bench two-seater… we were excited since we had heard such great things about the restaurant. We decided on the mixed kebab plate – with lamb, chicken, sausage, shrimp over basmati rice. It was a good thing I was with a close friend and in good company because it was only after 45 minutes that we realized we had still not been served.. the dining room was not full and we didn't order any appetizers so when we inquired about our meal, our waiter assured us it was coming out… and then 30 minutes later it did. The chicken was cooked/charred perfectly and it was a well done plate, I only wish I had been served faster… we were so hungry, we finished eating in less than 20 minutes!
I'd go back for a leisurely lunch and take advantage of their outside seating… but the service was disappointing and I would've rated the food a lot higher if it had come out in a reasonable time.
The hummus was good but not amazing. The portion is really huge, way more than two people can finish. Miiight have filled up on pita before our meals even came. The Vegetable ouzi (with spinach eggplant zucchini carrots peas) was good but the Chicken curried chicken layered with eggplant and rice was amazing! The chicken was perfectly cooked and I loved the eggplant in there, wish there was even more of it! Nothing was spicy, so I was good. I didn't like the 'Rumade' drink so I'll try something else next time. The staff was really nice and didn't mind that we really took our time and hung around for quite a while, even though it was Saturday night. The place is big so they still had plenty of tables. Next time, I hope I can sit in their cozy little room with cloth draped all over and pillows all around. Great spot!
