  1. Not good pizza.

I know it was late, but they really could've reheated the slices a bit more. Instead, what I got was a stale, partially cold slice.

    And it wasn't cheap either.

4 slices and 2 sodas was over $16.

They take credit cards over $10 though (which isn't hard to hit here).

Avoid if you can, but most of the other neighborhood slice places are closed by 10 on a Saturday.

  2. I walked in, pointed to a pie that was clearly fresh out of the oven and looked good, and asked for a slice. This is my MO for pretty much every slice joint in the city, and it's served me well so far.

After I stuffed it into my face in about four bites, the guy told me it was $3.75. Seriously? What kind of slice is that? Margherita? I must've caught you before you put the basil on.

Don't get me wrong, this was a good slice. Fresh mozzarella, tangy sauce, thin, crispy crust…I thoroughly enjoyed it. But I don't know if it's worth $3.75, unless you're including the price of the entertainment (some local girl practicing her ballet as her family ate). Which sounds like it's probably illegal. And if it isn't, it should be.

In fact, I feel creepy just mentioning it. And now I'm regretting that I did. Damn it, I swear I wasn't ogling some pre-teen…it's just not a big place and she was jumping around so much that it was hard not to notice. Sigh.

    Good slice, anyway.

  3. Sal's Pizza is probably one of my favorites in Brooklyn. I've been coming here since I was around 5 years old and, with maybe a couple of 'lost weeks' here and there, the quality has been consistently fantastic and it's still my favorite!

Everything always tastes fresh. The crust is perfectly thin- strong enough on the bottom to support the cheese without being too crunchy or burnt. Also- their garlic knots are the best around! The place itself is a good old fashioned Brooklyn pizzeria, unchanged in at least 20 years (though they got rid of the juke box… now how am I supposed to rock out to The Ghost Buster's Theme Song after a long hard day of pre-school?). They've got a more formal Italian restaurant next door that is really great too.

Overall, Sal's is the best, and, while I'm not surprised, I'm so glad it's been able to stick around for so long.

  4. Was
    Better
    But now just
    Better than the
    Other cheap delivery pizza joints.

  5. Proof that you can get a subpar slice in Brooklyn.

The good: it's edible. Delivery is fast.

The bad: you'll be kicking yourself for not sticking to your old standby (Vinny's!!) Crust and sauce is meh… canned mushrooms are just mush and hell, it's not even good cold.

If you're anything like me, you'd be inclined to trust in a place called Sal's (yep, plenty of those in my family, too), I'm going to have to stick to my cousin Vinny further down Court.

  6. This was one of the few times I did not check anything on Yelp and went with my gut as I walked by the store for a pizza pie. Clearly, my gut misled me otherwise and this is how I had arrived at 2.25/5.0

I had walked by earlier on my way to another venue and noticed it was connected to Mama Maria's. It did not dawn on me initially that it would be somehow connected to that Kitchen Nightmare's show and it really didn't matter to me either way.  The bottom line is the end product, and that's what matters most.  While I opted to have it delivered and ordered over the phone, this process was straightforward and prompt.

The two large pizzas and calamari arrived timely and piping hot. Although the fried calamari and marinara sauce were good, the pizza, which everyone gobbled was not so.  I have no issue with the drizzle of oil, however the cheese sadly slid off each slice before I was able to put it into my mouth. Perhaps if I let it sit, it might solidify enough to be just right, but that would not have saved it from the crust, which was equally unsatisfying and soggy.  Granted, this was a delivery order, it was uncharacteristic of Brooklyn pizza, compared to my favorite pizzerias in Bay Ridge. Two pies and a calamari order came out to $51. Mind you, we tipped the deliverer very well, but the pizza deserves a pass next time. 2.25/5.0

  7. My company and I had pizza from Sal's Pizzeria delivered to our office. Pizza was an hour late and they somehow had the wrong address. The deliverymen barely spoke English as well.

I tried the chicken and mushroom slice. The crust was nice and crunchy. However, I felt the chicken slice was a bit stale and cold. The mushroom slice was okay. They used actual mushroom.

They provide refrigerator magnets, so when you collect 10 of them, you get a free pie.

Some of my colleagues seem to think the pizza here was good, but as for me I think I have had better. I don't know if I would personally order from them again.

  8. This Carroll Gardens standby is very good but not great.  It's best if you eat-in if the dining room/kitchen is not sweltering because the crust of the eat-in  pies is thinner for some reason.  My theory is you can't bring such thin crust home and expect the pizza to hold up to the sauce cheese and toppings.  I like the sauce although my pizza aficionado  prefers a thicker paste-like sauce but we both agree less is more.  We both like mushrooms and they use fresh.  They don't use or have grated cheese so don't add or ask.  Maybe it's sacrilegious to add grated with fresh cheese but they even have a sign saying they don't have any.  (What Italian pizzeria/restaurant doesn't have grated cheese, honestly?!). I live in an Italian neighborhood and Sal's is an institution.
