Salumeria Biellese

“Their goods are no-frills, but they've perfected the basics of good traditional NYC Italian grub.”

“I usually stick with the prosciutto sandwich, the Italian combo, or the sausage & peppers or meatball heroes.”

“Their prosciutto and mozzarella hero with sundried tomatoes, oil and vinegar on fresh crusty Italian bread is so good, that I am tempted to give 5 stars.”

  1. ALERT ALERT ALERT

Do you like processed meats? Does fatty sausage tickle your fancy? Do you just want a huge pile of soppressata on bread?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you have got to get at Salumeria Biellese. I'm obsessed (sorry for the teen girl language) with soppressata, and the spicy selection here was PERFECT. It was perfectly fatty, salty, and a little fiery. They have a sweet soppressata too, which I'd probably try on a pizza or something.

The chicken parm sandwich looked incredible too — a coworker downed that in a couple minutes. But I'm just a girl, with a love for processed meats, standing in front of a deli.

Hang tight, Sal (my loving nickname for the deli), I'll be back soon.

  2. Salumeria Biellese is a concrete 4 stars if you understand what it is and what it's not.  What it is is a classic Italian deli with big portions and fresh cold cuts.  What it's not is a gourmet sandwich shop or fancy sit-down meal.  Truth be told, I prefer Sergimmo Salumeria a few blocks away because it looks and tastes more refined and I've found the employees friendlier, but Salumeria Biellese is still a good choice for a hearty Italian hero.

A couple of negatives that caused me to knock it 1 star:

    1) The bread could have been better.  Considering the quality of the rest of the ingredients, the bread should be better.

    2) I understand the classic deli look/feel, but that doesn't mean it has to feel dilapidated or be dirty.

    3) The employees weren't rude, but could definitely have been more cordial.

    4) Cash only is inconvenient.

The thing about Salumeria Biellese is that it if it was slightly cheaper, I would have overlooked the above criticisms on the basis that it's a cheap, incredibly delicious, no-frills, old-school deli.  But what I found is that it's a reasonably priced, pretty delicious, no-frills, old-school deli.  It's solid, but not spectacular.  Therefore, the critiques did matter to me, and ultimately this is why I settled on 4 stars.

  3. If you're into the whole New York sophistication and flair and like nice 5 star restaurants, this ain't your gig.

However, for those that like big Italian men and sweets deal in lower Midtown/Chelsea area, this place has got your back.  Big juicy yummy sandwiches and a drink are all under $10. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw soda $1 after hearing the outrageous prices of street vendors these past few days.

Unlike Sung K., my chicken parm was super yummy. Lots of sauce, tender, no moist, no mayo needed, crispy perfectly crunch french roll, all of these minor details culminated in a very satisfied stomach. David E. thought it was one of the best that he had ever tried in midtown.

PS – Eating a sandwich will involve lots and lots of napkins.

  4. Solid sausage sub served on a soft Italian roll.  Sure it may not keep the doctor away, but dang is it worth it.  It's not fancy, but it's a great quick stop over if you're nursing a hangover or just want a nice hot sub on cold days.

  5. RECOMMENDED

After lunching here about 6-8 times over the course of the last year and a half (it is pretty far from my workplace), my review is overdue:

Salumeria Biellese is part deli, part casual Italian eatery. It has 4-6 small tables. The workers behind the counter have always been pleasant and helpful.Much of the food is homemade. Other reviewers can correct me if I'm wrong but I think they make many of their own cold cuts. Of those cold cuts, the Italian ones(Capicola, Sopressata, ect.) are particularly fresh-tasting,delicious and flavorful. All of the Large Hot and Cold Heroes, both hot and cold, cost between 8-10 bucks. The small heroes are a dollar cheaper so the large is the better value. The restaurant features "Daily Specials" Like Roast Beef(Monday), Roast Turkey(Tuesday), Corned Beef(Wednesday), Roast Pork(Thursday) and Pastrami, Potato & Eggs and Linguine with Seafood(Friday). The eatery also serves casual Italian dishes like Baked Ziti, Lasagne & Spaghetti with Meatballs.

My rating is primarily based upon the huge and spectacular large Italian Combo($9.00). It is the best I've ever had. It is stuffed with meat and cheese. The Italian Bread is tasty and very well balanced between hard and soft which as I define as not "mushy" but not hard enough to imperil any dental work in your mouth. On 4/11/16, I had an amazing Roast Beef Hero.It was rare, juicy and packed with flavor.

If you are in the vicinity of Penn Station, or looking for a quality sandwich to eat on your LIRR train or Amtrack train, Salumeria Biellese is the place to consider.

  6. Angry, dirty looking people behind the counter, working with big sharp objects to slice your meats and cheeses down.  I like it already.

Tasty, cheap cold cuts sandwiches. Lots of fresh veg, good red wine vinegar, quality (enough) olive oils, crusty/soft baguette bread.  Good meats and cheeses… Under $10… I really do like this place for a quick, and cheap lunch after class.

  7. I was craving a simple yet flavorful sandwich and mission was accomplished!  They can dress up your hot or cold sandwich anyway you'd like.  For me, I was feeling some Capicola And Provolone which tasted fresh and was very filling.  This is a good alternative to the chains and they have a pretty diverse menu of Italian hot foods as well.   A little pricier than the chains but as you would expect you get what you pay for.

  8. BRING CASH!

If all you've read is my stressing to bring cash then my review was already helpful without you having read it all.  But if you choose to read further this spot isn't completely terrible but I have been able to find better specials in the area where I could get a soda and chips with the sandwich I buy for about the same price as a sandwich alone at this place.  What really irked me about this place is that I looked to make sure there was no signs saying credit card minimums or indication that they don't take credit card but no such sign exists.

To my surprise I was told it's a cash business only after having my order prepared and bagged.  I could have been an ass and walked away because I was really annoyed but I went next door to an ATM and had to get cash which would have not happened if a sign was posted because I DID in fact look.

Overall it's not a bad place though I thought slightly expensive when you compare similar specials in the area.  My sandwich was really good though.
