This restaurant is really a test of how much people will pay for a hamburger meal. Is $17 too much for an extremely good burger with no fries, no drink, in a fairly utilitarian environment? Is $25 (for the Salvation Burger)? At those prices, a meal for two of literally hamburgers, fries, and a beer each could scratch $100. Even an extra pickle costs.
Candidly, my answer is, yes, it is too much. That's not to take away from the Classic, which tastes and looks sort of like a Big Mac, but nearly perfect. And the vibe is cool, especially when April Bloomfield is working the kitchen. But I can never see myself being happy dropping a 100 on the meal I describe above. It is just too much; too rich. I don't really care how good it is.
My tip for this place is to go early! I work about 10 blocks away from here and was planning to meet my friend right after work. So I got there early (around 5:30) and put my name on the list and grabed a drink at the bar. It wasn't really crowded when I got there, but by the time we left it was packed!
Overall I really enjoyed it. I'll get straight to it, I thought the salvation burger was really good! I know it's $25, which is a lot for a burger, but damn, it was good. We requested it medium and it was cooked perfectly. The cheese was nice and melted, and the ramp butter was amazing! My friend and I shared everything we got, so overall it didn't wind up being too expensive. We started with a spiralized raw veggie salad with hummus. It was good, but nothing really special. We got a side of fries with the burger and they were really good too. Nice and crispy. For dessert we shared the fried apple pie. It kind of looked like a poptart, but was a lot better. It was nice and warm, and really good. I would have liked to try their special dessert for the night, a peanut butter s'mores pie, but my friend doesn't like peanut butter. I guess it gives me an excuse to go back.
The space isn't huge, but pretty big. There's tables, bar space, high tables along the perimeter and some booths. The booths have a flat screen that show a fire place with a fire burning.. kind of a nice touch. Service was fine for us. We were able to get our waiter's attention when we needed, and we were offered another drink when our glasses were almost empty. I've read mixed reviews about this place, but I liked it, and would definitely come back again.
Bros eating burgers. It's a dark wood environment w a hipster vibe and is a draw for the midtown suits. It's definitely a high quality burger (I ordered the Salvation Burger) but in my opinion it was a little too salty. Messy too, though that doesn't bother me. I don't know if it was the cheese or the ramp butter, but a burger with meat of that quality doesn't need too much. It could have used something to cut the richness, like a pickle or some raw onion. The fries were good and crispy. I may go back to try their classic burger… It looked really good.
got here on a Friday night around 7:45pm. it was quite poppin. we didn't get seated until 9ish. we've heard good things so we decided to grab some drinks at the bar and wait it out. so glad we did because the salvation burger was the bomb dot com. it's $25 (on the pricey end) but well worth it for the party in my mouth.
great drinks, great food, great ambiance.
I like the whole vibe this place has going on. I really did enjoy the salvation burger. It may have been because all day I was on a no carb diet and finally broke my diet for dinner. When we arrived we were seated promptly even though they said they had a 20 minute wait, they seated us at a smaller wall table and we placed an order with this cute server who recommended everything. we got: the salvation burger, classic burger, wood roasted oysters, the fries, and the banana cream pie. I was literally salivating for a short moment before all the food came out at perfect time intervals. Mission accomplished salvation burger. I'll be back!
Decided to come here after reading all the great reviews about the burgers..This place is packed during mid day but only waited about 15 minutes to get seated for two. I have to say I was blown away by how good the burger was..I ordered the Classic Burger that comes with Housemade Cheese, Special Sauce & Pickles.. The patties were cooked perfect to my liking and the house made cheese was on point.. Definitely one of the best burgers I've had in a while. The fries were very crunchy but not over cooked.. I'll definitely be coming back to try the salvation burger.
I was single-minded in pursuit of the Classic Burger, and it was worth every penny of the $17.
It's popular, It gets busy during happy hour.
Dropped by Salvation with a group of 6 on a Monday night. We got there at 6pm and did not have to wait but the place later did fill up around 730-8pm but Monday seems like a good night to go to avoid waits. To summarize, Salvation is a OK experience – in regards to the food, some hits (Classic burger), some misses (Salvation burger) – generally the food is okay but overpriced and slightly overrated. Big positive is that the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. Nice space as well.
Large beer selections – cans and drafts. As for cocktails, there were "cocktails on tap" and "bottled cocktails" which seemed odd to us so we passed. Server was very knowledgeable around the menu and made suggestions. For apps, we went with the spicy kirby (very good, and I pickle at home), bone marrow (also good, rich but not only the top), popcorn (basic). We wanted the beef hearts (which was recommended) but they ran out.
As for the burgers, we got 3 classics and 3 salvations to share for a group of 6. Also got a hot dog to top it off. Medium rare was recommended. Favored the Classic over the salvation given its 2 thin double patties and heaps of housemade cheese which was delicious. As for the Salvation burger, its 8oz of thicker meat is so oily/juicy and thick it makes the bottom bread layer soggy, which is a big negative in my book. Server raved about the ramp butter on the salvation but thought it was OK. Generally speaking, the table favored the classic over the salvation. (Although the discussion arises if the shack shake burger was on the level of the classic and if the Minetta tavern and DB burgers were better than the Salvation – generally the answer was Yes to both). Hot dog was nothing special. Fries (thin and crispy) are absolutely needed to complement the burgers. We got an off the menu dessert – the peanut creme which was good.
To summarize: Food is OK. Service is good. Space is clean. Not a place to go if you are a value person.
