Sam's is always my first stop in town when I'm visiting my family. Caldwell has at least five or six options for bagel shops and this is by far the best one. Their bagels are fresh, flavorful, faultless… they get a full five stars.
Lines can get a bit long but they move quickly and I cannot stress this enough….the bagels are worth it. Plus, you are bound to run into a friendly face or two in line.
Favorite combinations:
Everything "flagel" with sun-dried tomato cream cheese
Cinnamon raisin bagel with plain cream cheese
Pro-tip:
If you're feeling hedonistic, make a drink from their machine that is half cappuccino and half hot chocolate. HEAVENLY.
Wow…
I'm hard on bagel places if they have mediocre bagels…if you're in NJ, don't be a mediocre bagel shop, pizza joint, diner, or Italian restaurant-you will fail. Sam's Bagels is near my daughter's high school and on this morning when I needed to bring her to track practice I needed something to eat…so I decided to give it a try.
I got my standard TEC on an everything bagel and it was delicious. Great flavor in the bagel and they are pretty big…they also didn't skimp on the Taylor Ham. My only issue was that I like my Taylor ham a little more well done…and it was $4 which is about right I guess.
The shop itself is tiny and was PACKED full of people so it must be popular…and after eating I can see why. I could also see why it might be a bit annoying when it's packed like this. The parking lot is a little crazy (Sam's is in a small strip mall), but I can't blame that on the shop…just be careful.
Looks like I may have found a perfectly acceptable alternative for a bagel shop if I'm out near my daughter's school in the morning…
The bagels and cream cheese are good but that's about it… The store is so small and there's always a thousand people on line,
The people who work here are rude, unfriendly and dumb. They give u an attitude if u don't order in five seconds and charge me literally a different price for the same two things every time I go in there. They just make up prices… It's weird and annoying
These bagels are coming with me in that "what three things are you bringing on your deserted island" game. Every time we come to Caldwell we come here and stock up like we'll never see bagels again (we live in DC, we might not!)
The sandwiches are great, the bagels are heavenly, and even when there's a line out the door it moves quickly and is well worth it. I've had a couple of messed up orders (my boyfriend is allergic to dairy so he has to customize a lot of stuff, which while annoying is also necessary) but they always fix it quickly. It's a good idea to kind of watch as they're making the sandwich if you have any specific dietary requirements, just to remind them. Or, if it won't kill you, to just take what they give you because it will be delicious regardless.
Just lettin' you guys know, I'm about to get all romantic over bagels here. Poetic, even. Haiku-style, five times, let's go:
Bagels of my youth
Hot half dozen waits for me
When I wake – thanks, Dad!
Fresh grab out the bag
And save the rest for Sunday
Delicious for days
Ho, bagel purists!
A hockey puck, this is not
Fluffy, gigantic
A toaster-crisped top
As butter runneth over
Dense, crevassed innards
Sam's, Jersey's finest
From flagels to Taylor Ham
Repeat next weekend
I think I've made my point clear. Sam's is the shiz.
