A few years back, I think this place was voted one of the best sushi places on Long Island. Being I love sushi, and this place is located in my hometown, you'd think I would have rushed to try it. But, only recently I decided to experience the greatness they call Satsuki, under the LIRR. I now consider myself a regular.
It is a small restaurant, like most of the sushi places I have been to. When there is only one guy making the sushi, too many tables can mean trouble. Hand rolls take mastery to create, so I appreciate and understand the need for a small place.
I found the staff to be very friendly. They are very accommodating to those who have trouble with chopsticks. I once saw an older gentleman trying to get the hang of the sticks clumsily, but also refusing the offer of a fork. The waitress brought over this little plastic thing that clipped on the end of the chopsticks and made it easier for him to use. It brought me back to the many years I struggled with chopsticks. I wish I had that back then.
Now, onto the best part – the food! I always order the three roll special. You can pick three out of fifteen rolls, and also get a bowl of miso soup and a salad (only $18.) The ginger salad dressing is by far my favorite here. It has a little kick! I always choose the eel, salmon skin, and California rolls. You can substitute cucumber for scallion in most of the rolls, which I love. I always make sure I am extra hungry when I order this meal, because it is a lot of food – AND you just can't wrap leftover sushi to go.
You have to check on the hours. I know they are not open on Mondays. On weekdays, they are open for lunch from 12:00-2:30, but then close until 5:30, and re-open for dinner. I have walked into this place, Wednesday at 5:45 and was turned away for not having a reservation. Following night, I went back at the same time, and I was the only diner. It could be a hit or miss for walk-ins.
Lynbrook is a small town, so it really is a treat having this little jewel tucked under the nosy LIRR.
*Extra silly thing that made me happy about this place: You order a diet soda and they ask "Coke or Sprite Zero!" Usually you don't have the option. Sprite Zero all the way!!!!
If you like homey and friendly authentic Japanese place, this is a good place to go.
This place has both authentic and Americanized sushi. I went there after the peak of dinner time. So only two groups of customers were eating at that time. Some of the wait staff are Japanese. I don't know if the chef is Japanese American or Chinese American. Every staff workers were extremely friendly. Even chef came and greeted to us. They asked where we were from and so happy to find out I came from Queens. They told other customer group where I came from. Also, they told us so happily that other customers came all the way from Brooklyn. I thought staff were very nice, but I wished we had more time to enjoy food alone.
They served us complementary delicious monk fish liver. I thought that was very nice. Actually, their food was very good. So I want to go back there, but next time I will go there in peak time on purpose so that we will have more time to be alone to concentrate on eating food.
Next time, if I go there when they are busy, I feel like I will give them 4 stars.
Hands down one of my favorite japanese restaurants ever. Every time you walk in you feel like you are seeing family. The fish is always fresh. The tamago is some of the best that I've ever had.
I love this place and will continue going for many years because it is so tasty.
The location is quite odd because it is right under the train tracks but the atmosphere of the restuarant itself is very nice. It is well maintained. They have limited staff. I went the other day and there was no body manning the front desk and two guys in the kitchen. The portion size is a bit small for the price. I have had larger pieces of salmon for a salmon teriyaki for the same price. Their unagi don is okay. Not as well done as other places, but decent. They had a seafood soup back in the summer that was quite delightful. My friends love the ramen here though. The sushi was not very fresh. I ordered a simple philly roll and there was salmon juice coming out. I am not sure how I feel about that because I have never encountered this when I eat any raw fish.
