Was headed to Mountain Creek from NYC and searched on Yelp for a quick lunch nearby. I was really excited to find this Latin American restaurant with over 100 reviews and 5 stars! Reading through the reviews, I found that the food was pre-made so it was the perfect choice for a quick lunch. The food was definitely good but not sure why it is rated so much better than other places. It is definitely an awesome choice if you are craving Latin American food because there is a lot of variety..I personally enjoyed the plantains, yucca fries, yellow rice, beef stew and chicharron! Chicharron is a recent food discovery of mine and Sazon Latino Restaurant had the best I've tried so far..fried just enough but not too fatty. The restaurant is also very fast and cheap. There is a bathroom inside and small parking lot in the back for people driving to the restaurant. The only thing I think the restaurant could improve on is appearance. The line is also in a narrow corridor where the drink refrigerators are so it can be hard to look at the drinks when there is a line.
I love little places like Sazon Latino with the joy and taste of home. Sazon is tucked away in Boonton across the street from the train station, and can be easy to miss if you don't know where to look. That said, don't miss it. You're not going to get biodynamically grown locavore ingredients prepared with classical French technique (which is fine). What you are going to get is food prepared by a wonderfully generous owner the way he would prepare food for his own family. As other reviewers have said, there is no menu; you just pick out what looks good and tuck in to a delicious meal. I take friends, even those from out of town, to Sazon whenever I can.
Given the kind of restaurants I favor, there's no way I can give this place anything less than five stars. Authentic, fast, affordable, and with a parking lot! Making the drive to Sazon is worth it every time.
Takout and eat-in are both viable options. Looking at the setup, one might assume its a takeout only joint. However, Sazon is a great place for a quick dinner or lunch with a group. They have a decently sized, no frills dining area so you can bring the whole crew.
The food is traditional Honduran, so there's usually a selection of stews, fried fish, rice, beans, and plantains. A platter loaded up with delicious goodness will run you $8-10 depending on your choices. There's really not a bad thing on their menu, though if you see a fresh, steaming hot tray or dish coming out of the kitchen I recommend going for it. I can't really recommend anything specific because everything I've tried has been great.
Not that there needed to be any additional lure to get me over there, but there's one more great thing going for this place: the owners. They are very friendly and willing to answer any questions you may have on the food. If they make a recommendation on something, just go with it.
Writing this review has inspired me to get over there tonight for some dinner. I suggest you follow my example and get over to Sazon, you will not be disappointed.
Came here for lunch, and I must say boonton is a beautiful place!….this eatery is located right from the train stop of boonton, even though I didn't know their was a parking space to the location in the back before hand I did find parking on a side street a block up from the location. Their were plenty of choices from chicken, beef steak, pork sausage, white rice, yellow rice…I settled for the yellow rice, yuca, black beans, maduros aka sweet plantains, and the beef stew…. Portions not too great, but the food itself was awesome, you can tell it was fresh because they had just replaced the rice cooked earlier with fresh yellow/white at the choice area and the total was about $9.75 with a 20oz Coca Cola…which is not bad at all…just wish the portions would have been to my fatass liking, I did tell him I was hungry lol
The food here is excellent, despite how it may look to a newcomer. This is more of a cafeteria-style restaurant where you go up to the counter, look at what they have, and select what you'd like, either to-go or you can sit at the tables to eat. I believe the family is Honduran. They are all beyond friendly and pleasant. I have to say again, the food is excellent and the prices are extremely fair. Do not be afraid, just find a parking spot along the street, walk in, and be happy.
Boonton is a small town but has its fair share of good eats. While the exterior may not look like much, the food is what makes this place a local favorite. Here's how it works: There's no menu. The owner, Gerardo, and the cooks decide what they want to cook. Whatever is cooked basically becomes the menu for that day. The dishes are placed on a long heating table behind a glass pane, and you basically point at what you want on your plate–from rice to side dishes.
-Plate with yellow rice, black beans, fried plantains, roasted pork, and chorizo (~$10): No price was actually listed, but I'm thinking each item is $2 based on my final check, which is not bad given the amount of food you get. The rice was delicious, since it literally finished cooking right when my group walked in–talk about great timing! The beans and plantains were great, too, but the roasted pork and chorizo were the stars. The pork was savory and tender and the chorizo was nice and juicy. Both had a good amount of fat mixed in. The chorizo was thick and stuffed nicely, while the roasted pork was perfect with the pico de gallo and jalapeños. Side dishes on the left side of the cashier are free.
-Empanadas ($1 each): Sazon Latino is said to be one of the top 5 places in New Jersey for empanadas. I must say, they really are good. The dough and crust were fried perfectly and stuffed generously. You could add sauce if you'd like but these are delicious as is. I ordered three to share with two other people, but I ended up eating all of them on my own. They're so good that I ended up ordering six more to go.
Overall, Sazon Latino was a great find. It's a small eatery, but serves up some great food for very reasonable prices. Everyone here is super friendly, too–from Gerardo to the cooks. We had a nice conversation with them on a variety of topics after our meal– spanning from education to the difference between Jersey and California. There's really nothing I can complain about. I love the food and I love the service. I'll be back.
No empanadas and no ribs today. Bummer. Still the food was very good. Took my elderly Puerto Rican mother who enjoyed the food but who said it was definitely not Puerto Rican flavored. I had the black rice, pig's feet, and sausage which was not only very good but I had to stop the server from serving any more. The yuca was meh. Also had a mango drink which all came to $10 per person.
The only real negative is the steep steps to enter through the rear (remember elderly mom). Friendly staff and owner and very clean. Don't know Spanish? No problema.
This place is as legit and authentic as you will get, comparable to some of my favorites in North Bergen and West New York. It's cafeteria style and was actually a great offering for my 3 year old daughter. We had rice, chicken which falls off the bone, beans and a chicken empanada. We both loved it and it's a good place to sit and eat. All in all great food for $7-$9.
