Solid find in Greenpoint for a business lunch.
Cordially greeted at the door, water promptly brought to the table.
Nice menu, quite a variety of dishes
We ordered grilled calamari, cooked well
Came with caramelized peppers and onions garnished with lemon.
Sauteed spinach and broccoli rabe were very well done, could not have done better myself.
My guest ordered lasagna, review was great aside from a bay leaf in the middle. Half star off
I ordered a rib eye, waitress came back and said no dice….grrr 1/4 star off. I went with the scallops, shame on me I didn't ask if there were sides.
I would have expected a potato and a vegetable but the scallops (diver) came out on a salad. Pleasantly surprised, perfectly seared and seasoned and delicious
Asked for crushed red pepper for the broccoli rabe and spinach….no show another 1/4 off
Overall solid casual experience
Looks like they offer wine only.
I was very reluctant about going in but I'm Super glad I did. Amazing home style Italian food and a low key laid back style.
They have different appetizers each day and the pasta is beyond any pasta I have every had and my good friends mother and grandmother use to cook food for us all the time. The portions are great not to much and not to little so you leave feeling full but not nasty and guilty of what you just ate.
This little comfort spot was one of the biggest highlights of my new york trip. its trendy but in a very understated way and definitely blends in with the whole "brooklyn neighborhood" vibe.
the portions are huge considering that i grew up in southern california where no one would dare to eat pasta, ever, let alone plates THIS size. i ordered some ravioli i couldn't finish and my friend had to take over because apparently it's not polite to not finish. which i agree, but just can't fit more in my stomach!
service is great since the place isn't so big. perfect for good food, nice wine, and good company.
AH-mazing! My friend and I came here for dinner after putting our names down on the waiting list for 2 other restaurants in the area, and we were certainly not disappointed. Scalino is a spacious restaurant that serves perhaps the BEST pappardelle I have ever tasted! Do yourself a favor and splurge on this delectable menu item! You can't go wrong with either their standard menu item (pappardelle with tomato cream and smoked bacon) or the pappardelle special with truffled butter. I swear we died and went to heaven with each bite! Other standouts on the menu that night were their antipasto Scalino (because who can't have enough meats and cheese right?) and their salmon (with just the right amount of crusty crunch on the outside). We topped off our meal with a bottle of Pinot Grigio and tiramisu for dessert, and for the entire bill to come out at less than $100 for 2 people (without tip) I am genuinely satisfied. Service is also wonderful – hospitable, funny, just the right amount of checking in on you. I will definitely be back, hungry for more!
Me and me mum came here for a late afternoon lunch on a weekday, like election day or something. When we arrived, two of the tables in the spacious restaurant were occupied and mum was sort of skeptical about eating at a place that was practically empty, but eventually I got her to try the place out.
Since the restaurant was lacking patrons, we were seated and served right away. The food was okay in my book but my mum seemed to love it. I feel that the waitress/hostess could have been a bit friendlier/nicer since it was rather slow and she didn't have to attend to too many people.
It wasn't exactly my cup of tea but if you like affordable Italian food then you'll probably love this place.
I brought my Aunt & Uncle to this spot after a long day in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
We all loved it here. The setting of the restaurant is set up really nice but also casual enough where you feel comfortable. My Aunt said it was like eating at someone's home. Bar in the back had the Mets game on. Great spot to chill and drink and eat.
I had the Pappardelle with tomato cream sauce and bacon. I mean…a light creamy sauce with BACON!!!!! I dont know why the whole restaurant did not just order this dish. After eating all day and drinking beers all day …I thought it would make me over full ….not at all. Just the right amount in the serving and we left full and happy.
The staff was great too. The waiter was cool and prompt and the manager came over and spoke to us several times. Fun atmosphere. I will definitely go back.
I have passed by Scalino several times but never felt excited enough to give it a shot. Maybe because it is basic Italian food in an ethnically interesting neighborhood. Maybe the restaurant's spacious yet oddly empty interior never seemed very welcoming to me. Nevertheless, I decided to give it a shot one rainy Saturday evening.
I got the prosciutto and melon appetizer, which I thought may have been a lovely refreshing diversion, but the prosciutto lacked flavor and there wasn't enough of it. The taglierini with meat sauce was reasonably tasty, although I would have preferred a firmer bite. I don't think I'll return here – the pricey menu does not justify the average food.
Lovely Monday evening at Scalino in GP. Arrived around 6:30 and were the only people in the entire restaurant, for a good 35 min. Even when we left it was empty but the place had a sense of simplicity and authenticity that can't be beat. Almost like they don't waste time on too many frills but instead offer quality food at a good price in a chill atmosphere. They don't even have music playing in the background, very uncommon.
I assume one of the family members was the person who took our order. The grilled calamari was plentiful and also clean and simple. It tasted very fresh and we got a good portion of seafood for the price. They also offer a fried option but we wanted to be a fraction healthier.
For dinner we had the chicken and salmon. I loved how thin the chicken was pounded so that it was easy to digest and seasoned well. It was good quality meat. It was coated with arugula and tomato, my favorite, so a very healthy option. The salmon was along the same lines and came with asparagus. Also delicious.
Prices are reasonable for good Italian especially compared the others in the hood. I feel you can't go wrong here. The wine list is also cheap for what they offer, which is a lot.
It's so rare to come across no frills, quality, dining IN restaurants, especially in Greenpoint. This is why Scalino stands out and I hope others follow its model. Oh, and the bread bowl was amazing!
