I was traveling when I found out that Screamer's would be opening and I almost screamed myself that wouldn't be there for the opening day (and the $2 slices)! I love love love Blackbird's in Philly and Champ's in Brooklyn, so I'd have been pretty surprised if Screamer's was anything short of fantastic.
It didn't disappoint. When I finally got back into town, I tried about half the menu. Everything was delicious. The almond ricotta on the white slice was creamy and thick, the house made vegan sausage on the artichoke/sausage was super tasty, and the garlic knots sufficiently salty and garlicky (only complaint – I wish they were a little bigger). The crust is perfect thin NYC style. They use daiya cheese on pretty much all of the pizzas and it worked much better than I've seen elsewhere – they integrated it into sauce and had other bold flavors so it wasn't just a straight up daiya slice.
They kept churning out fresh pizzas as we were there, but couldn't try them all! Will have to be back for the supreme.
And when you're done with your savory slices, you can head next door to Van Leeuwen's for some mouth-watering vegan ice cream!
Screamer's Pizzeria is the offspring of the coming together of two greats: Brooklyn's own Champs Diner, and Philly's Blackbirds Vegan Pizzeria. A very small location, they are currently serving up pizza and calzones and I have to tell you this – their calzones are where it is at!
Filled with vegan cheese and housemade tofu ricotta, stuffed with whatever you like these babies are custom made to order. One tip: get the "Screamers Pizza" special in a calzone with extra garlic oil. These are enough to feed to ravishing emaciated vegans, or just one fat vegan (yours truly), or pretty much two of any type of eater. Seriously, they're monsters.
Also try the garlic knots!
One regret of mine is that they aren't serving up my favorite items from Blackbirds in Philly: the vegan wings! I could sing a sonnet about their root beer wings, but then it would turn into a sad love song, because Philly is too far away and the distance is putting a severe strain on our love affair.
*le tear*
When I first went vegan, saying goodbye to the convenience of being able to walk into a pizza place and order a slice was a bit of a downer. Since then I'd been longing for a place like this, a place where I wouldn't have to deal with weird overpriced hipster "creations" and could just order a slice in peace. Then I heard about Screamer's, then I decided to go there. And I'll tell you now, it's the gift from the vegan pizza gods we've all been longing for.
I got two slices, a white slice with cherry tomatoes and pesto on it, and a hawaiian slice. I was really happy with the white slice, their ricotta is great. The Hawaiian was good but I wasn't as crazy about it. It would have been better with less cheese, (I'm guessing they use daiya or something similar), or a different type of cheese. I also tried bites of the slices my fiance got (pepperoni and another kind of white slice). The pepperoni was great, but again, I didn't like the cheese ratio. The white slice he got was amazing.
Screamer's may have filled the void I was looking for with finding a normal place, but they haven't provided me with the vegan mozzarella I'm still hoping to find someday. But that's not a big deal. I'm just glad they exist and that I can go there. I plan on going back and eventually trying every kind of slice they have to offer.
Anyway, I'll say now I'd have given them 4.5/5 if I could have. But I decided to round it up to 5.
My only suggestions to make Screamer's truely perfect would be to add/change the following things:
1. Offer normal soda (like coke or dr. pepper) on the menu. Preferably in a large cup with ice.
2. Get vegan parmesan shakers.
3. Add garlic knots to the menu.
4. Add Italian ices to the menu.
Seriously, if the things I mentioned had been present when I was there, I would have broken down into tears of joy. Instead I almost broke into tears of joy but was able to contain myself.
