Reasonable solid. The cheese and phyllo (Boregi) were the best bet along with the stuffed grape leaves. I didn't like the artichokes.
This place is amazing. They give you really good bread, olive oil, and olives when you sit down. We split a small cold appetizer sampler, zucchini pancakes, and the chicken kabob/gyro combo. Everything was delicious. The appetizer sampler had six different dips and they were all excellent. The spicy salad was my favorite dip, but they were all so good. The zucchini pancakes were huge and fried but also really tasty. By the time the meal came we were pretty full so we took most of it home but the chicken kabobs were the juiciest chicken I have ever had. At the end of the meal they bring you pistachio baklava that is an amazing finish to the meal. The fact that it's a byob and the service is great is also a huge plus. They even open the door for you when you enter and leave. I can't wait to go back!
Great local spot in West Orange! I wish there were more restaurants like this around town. We started out with the Lebni, which is a yogurt sauce blended with garlic. It has tangy yet fresh flavor to it. We also tried the Babaganoush, (on the house!!!) which is an eggplant tahini sauce. The dips were served with warm soft bread and they both were excellent! Nice light start before a heavy meal.
There are several grilled combinations along with traditional dishes on their menu. For the main course, I went with the Chicken Kabob and Ground Lamb Kebab Combo. The dish comes with grilled bell pepper, grilled tomatoes and rice. Both Kabobs were delicious and are comparable to places in Paterson. The meats were very moist and the ground lamb was perfectly spiced.
The place has a very friendly staff and is BYOB. FYI – it gets a bit crowded on Saturday, so I would recommend reservations.
Our group of 7 couldn't wait to eat after my nephew's 1st place finish in a national TKD competition held nearby. We had been watching sparring and forms while eating concession stand food for about 6 hours at this point. After a bit of deliberating, Momma N. made the final decision as she's been here before.
The restaurant isn't big and had quite a few diners already, but the friendly staff made accommodations with the tables they had remaining.
~ Food: 3.5 ~
We opted not to have appetizers since we had a good feeling we'd be stuffed without it. After ordering, we were treated to delicious soft, hot bread served with olive oil and olives.
As for the entrees, they were a 3 overall. The lamb was delicious and tender, but the gyro and chicken were a bit pedestrian in terms of taste and texture. The gyro lacked the bit of fattiness I enjoy, and the chicken wasn't as tender as I've had. They also serve most dishes with charred bell pepper and tomato. I ended up eating everyone's bell pepper since it was basically raw, except for the charred area.
The desserts are delicious, if not a bit on the sweet side. I was also content with the decaf coffee.
~ Service: 4.5 ~
If it wasn't for the long, random wait for the check at the end, this place would have gotten a perfect 5. The waiter was very attentive, humorous and threw us a couple of freebies.
Overall, I like what they have done to this space, which has basically gone unoccupied for as long as I can remember. I'll probably stick to lamb next time.
My second visit here in about 6 months and the food and service are quite good.
We started off with hummus and the delicious puffed Turkish bread, that is crispy like a baguette on the outside; nothing like pita bread you usually get with hummus.
This is a BYOB, so we brought our own beer to go with the lamb and chicken kebabs we ordered. They were served with grilled green peppers and tomato with a side of rice. The menu has a good selection of both cold and hot appetizers, soups, salads and traditional Turkish entrees. They have a small dessert menu, if you have any room left after their generous entree portions.
Great to finally have a good restaurant taking up residence at the intersection of PVW & Eagle Rock. Stopped in on Thursday night after Sandy to have some warmth, light, and relax after a stressful week and was very happy with the experience.
The open kitchen always makes me comfortable with the cleanliness, and the service was very friendly. We sampled a little of everything – nice warm bread worked well with mixed cold app sampler had a nice, smokey hummus, excellent grape leaves (I've sampled plenty and usually don't like them), cacik (more refreshing dill dip than soup). More bread please…
I'd go as far to say the mixed kebab platter was outstanding with nicely seared, crispy, and flavorful meats. The manti beef dumplings were also really nice with savory beef and the subtle tartness of the yogurt sauce.
Total bill was $100 with tip for 3 stuffed people; I'd feel safe recommending anything on the menu, and I never argue with BYOB! Good luck!
Came in with some friends for dinner after reading the many positive reviews.
We ordered babaganoush and kibbeh as appetizers which were both outstanding. The sid eof bread was also warm and tasty.
As entrees we all ordered combination platters. I opted for the gyro and lamb skewers which was quite good. The lamb was perfectly seasond and came with a nice tzatziki sauce.
Service was attentive and helpful with the menu. Prices were very reasonable for the amount of food we received.
This was the best meal I've had at West Orange and its nearby neighborhoods. During lunch time, they had specials, which come with soup or salad. We started off with the complimentary pancake bread. I couldn't stop eating that! I ordered the shish kebab (was told it's the most popular item) and spinach soup of the side. Dipped the bread in the soup as well..great pairing. The rice with the shish kebab was amazing! I loved everything here! The spicy vegetable salad looks great too, wish I had a bigger appetite that day.
