Sekend Sun

“The brunch also has a nice combo of deliciously greasy and healthy options, depending on what you're looking for, and the potatoes are AWESOME.”

“The Black Baby Grand was ok and the Mickey's Late Night Reviver was refreshing but it'd be nice to see other less sweet options.”

“Some items are a decent portion (fries, beignets) but some are laughably small (I'm looking at you, tots and pretzels).”

  1. I got here at 5:45pm and told one of the hostess that I was here for a birthday and she pointed back of the house. I had no clue which table were reserved then I asked her again and sat at a round table with bar stools then the birthday girl's boyfriend's brother Dylan arrived and sat down with me. A little after the hostess comes over to us and asked which birthday are we here for…SMH! So Dylan called Mercedes (the birthday girl) regarding her reservation as it wasn't stated in the computer. Finally the birthday girl arrived at the restaurant to straighten out and she had an email to prove her reservation. The hostess had to get in touch with one of the managers. Instead of really accommodating my friend's birthday celebration dinner. The restaurant made all of us waited a pretty long time for an available table since it got packed around 6:30ish. Seriously the management communication really sucks here!

When we FINALLY get a table on a nice high booth and had to ask for another table to close out the huge gap…really c'mon its common sense! We aren't there for your alcohol but want a sit down birthday dinner. The food menu isn't much so I didn't know why the hostess/server didn't even thought to ask if we wanted food but to assume we were just drinking…not good! After we ordered our individual dishes, the hostess was nice to bring a round of complimentary shots as we waited for our food but still it didn't sit well with me.

Cocktails: and how was pretty popular at our table so it must be a refreshing drink

    Food:
Small Plates menu: Mercedes and her boo Cameron shared parker house rolls, grilled wings and mac n cheese

fried chicken sandwich (3) w/french fries…it was VERY YUMMY sandwich

a good burger (2) w/french fries and another with arugula salad

    fish 'n chips (1)

Overall the food was very delicious but the two stars are going to stay as the experience wasn't a WOW factor!

  2. Great bar in astoria to grab drinks with friends.  Definitely the kind of place you can invite a large group of friends to.  Highly recommend!

  3. A friend of mine raved about this place in Astoria that had a great burger deal that I had to try. Finally I made my way to Sekend Sun. Our group of three all ordered the Tuesday bar deal for burgers and a beer for 10$ each. The burger was pretty typical and nondescript other than the fact that it came with a beer for 10$. We also sampled each of the sides that comes with the burger. As the waitress said, the fries were pretty good (…and I regret not getting them for myself), the salad was ordinary, and the pickles were rather unique. When menu mentions pickles, do not expect normal pickled cucumbers. Sekend Sun does a rather unique pickle of different vegetables. I did enjoy the picked cauliflower and would have greatly appreciated that instead of the picked onions. I'm not one for raw onions but I figured that I would give it a try. It seems that brine didn't do much to permeate the onion, it just tasted like biting into a raw onion. Next time, i think some traditional pickling vegetables in your house brine would taste delicious.

  4. Eric and I stopped in for drinks before a dinner with friends. My Manhattan was delightful and the bartender was welcoming and friendly. The menu looked really great and I would definitely come back for more cocktails and food.

  5. *** Please note that this single star is for service only.

Came here for a leisurely Saturday brunch, was impressed with the food but aghast with the service.

    Pros:
    * Spacious venue with warm and humble decor. There's a long bar, comfortable open waiting area in the front with open window, and a lovely outdoor seating area adorned with the neon Queens sign.
    * Because Sekend Sun is fairly new, there was no wait for a table.
    * My gf and I indulged in the brunch special ($14 for entree, cocktail and coffee), and were very  pleased with our beautifully presented dishes made with fresh and simple ingredients. My Frittata with smoked sausage & pimento cheese was cooked perfectly and her Scrambled Eggs with Home Fries & Arugula Salad was delicious. The $6 Beignets with powdered sugar were hot and fresh (takes about 10 min to make) and came in a sizable portion good for a table of 6. Sadly the Nutella Beignets are not available during Brunch.

    Major cons:
    * Having lived in New York for over 6 years, I don't remember the last time table service was this terrible and disorganized. This was, by far, the most abysmal service I've experienced…
    * Firstly when I walked in no-one came to receive me. It was only when I asked staff for a table that I was informed Sekend Sun was a "grab your own table" kinda place….which is confusing for first-time customers….
    * Our waitress Jess never gave us water and left us with one napkin for the table. She got so many surrounding orders wrong that everyone in the backyard gave each other confused and exasperated looks. The busboys with dishes were standing around awkwardly wondering what goes where. The customers actually had to tell the staff what they ordered again to clear things up. At least 2 parties left angrily before ordering because no-one tended to them for so long.
    * When the check and the boxes we requested for Beignets didn't come for over 20 minutes, we frustratingly went to pay our tab at the bar. Our server nor the guy who closed our tab at the bar apologized for the atrociousness.

To top things off, Jess wore such low riding jeans that as she bent down to serve dishes her butt-crack said hello.

    UGHHHH!! HORRIBLE WITH CAPITAL LETTERS.
Even just an apology or explanation would have gone a long way. To this day no apology has been given…so I stand by my review.

  6. Went here for my friend's birthday and I really liked the decor and that they have a back garden (unfortunately we weren't able to get a table back there.) We didn't get food so I can't speak to that, but they had a good beer selection. Cocktails seemed fancy and innovative, but I am a little more traditional so I would have liked one classic thrown in. My husband and friend liked their choices though. Service was OK, waitress didn't come back for a bit after I finished my beer, and by that point I didn't want another one. However they were very chill about letting us linger at the table after we had stopped drinking, which was nice. Not my favorite spot but I would definitely go back.

  7. Had the tater tots, delicious. The mac and cheese was so so, and I didn't try the drinks because they all seem a little bit too gimmicky for my taste, a trying to hard to be different feel. The decor is great love the big queens light in the back. Service is lacking but very friendly.

  8. Nice bar with an outdoor patio. They have a cool Queens  light in the back that shines pretty brightly. The place overall has a dive casual chic flare to it. It doesn't know what kind of direction to go in. Food – I did not try. The menu is small and nothing really popped out at me. Drink menu – has about 5-6 signature drinks. I can't remember the name of my drink but it closely resembles a margarita with the rim lines in hot spicy stuff. I didn't like it at all. It was super bitter and had some weird flavors, very potent. Also, that cocktail was going in crazy directions. I didn't order a second because I didn't enjoy it. There wasn't anything else really to order that caught my eye. I will update my review for this place  when I've given the food a try. I did see people around us order burgers. It's on Broadway so parking is on meter streets. Music was relaxed, elevator type, not sure what genre.
