Traditional Spanish. Emphasis on traditional.
Came upon this place by borrowing a jacket from my Uncle interestingly enough – reached in the pocket I found a old book of matches for this restaurant. So I asked my Uncle about it who had lived in the city for many years, and he had great memories of this spot from the 80s, and he'll come back time to time when he has a craving for Spanish.
I've spent a lot of time in Spain – both in the form of travel and extended stay (I studied abroad in Madrid for 5 months). This place is most definitely the closest thing to an authentic Spanish dining experience you will find in New York. Everything from the menu and the decor to the staff/service and the atmosphere makes you feel as though you've been transplanted to the old-guard Iberian peninsula.
Food is good, but you have to appreciate traditional Spanish recipes, which I realize is not for everyone. You won't find swanky/creative/modern tapas dishes here. The wait staff are older Spanish gentlemen who take pride in keeping their native palate alive here in the states and are passionate about sharing that with you. Interestingly, I noticed while dining that there was pretty substantial Spanish patronage – and I've come to learn that Spaniards on trips to New York will often make this place a part of their visit to have a taste of home.
As this is a Spanish restaurant, don't be shocked to wait a while for a table if you don't have a reservation (or even if you do). People take their time. Dinner will drag on for a couple hours as dessert wines and postres are slowly consumed. Overall, I'd recommend this place for anyone who knows they can appreciate traditional Spanish – but if that's not your style, this is not the place for you.
What Sevilla may lack in space and service it makes up for with food and old-school charm. This West Village restaurant is crowded and packs them in. Even getting to the restrooms can be a challenge. And service is definitely not a strong suit. The food is why you come here, onve you get past the mediocre salad. The Paella and Arroz con Pollo were delicious.
LOVED this restaurant! The red wine sangria was my fave! The food was excellent too. The only semi-complaint I have is that this restaurant is small, so be ready to do a lot of squeezing :p otherwise, I would love to come back!
The food was amazing, but the only downfall was how long it took to get our checks at the end. This has happened the past couple times we've visited. But the food brings us back every time! The garlicky goodness 🙂 Started with the stuffed mushrooms and croquetas. Both very delicious. My friend got the clam and I got the Mussels, both in the Ajillo sauce. The food is always amazing, just wish the service was a little faster. We were there for almost 2hrs, and when we got there it wasn't very busy (4 tables at most).
Sevilla's food is solid! In many ways, (for me) food is always delicious. Everything from appetizers to desserts, are made tastefully. I always go for the triple-hitter: red sangria, Paella a la Marinera (Seafood only Paella made with no chorizo since I don't eat pork) and Almond Cake. And I couldn't be more excited, to have the same three items-time and time again, with some exception and include other goodies in between.
Sevilla is not your one-trick pony restaurant. Apart from its unpretentious, old-world, interior vibe, it still keeps an intimate flair. Mr. Man and I, have set out to trek from White Plains and dine here at least once a month, because aside from the tasty, typical Spanish food, service is consistently good.
On our most recent visit, the owner, pulled up a chair- as if we've been besties like for ages and struck a conversation with me about the good old days. You go to Sevilla to chill and enjoy your meal. Don't expect hurried meals here. The tempo in Sevilla is friendly yet, leisured. And the warm welcome as you're entering, is equally the same as the send off.
Sevilla is perhaps the best in class of this type of restaurant: old school dining with recipes from the old country. In this case the old country of which I speak is Espana.
My guests and I ordered what we typically order whenever we visit these sorts of places with the addition of mussels in spicy garlic sauce–the highlight of the evening. The balance of our order consisted of two pitchers or red sangria; Valencia paella; chicken, sausage and rice; and, finally, grilled squid (calamari). After promptly consuming the first pitcher of sangria, the food tasted great. Perhaps we should have eaten first? Please keep this in mind if you visit and you have a very different experience.
Staff was adequate and so was the service. All this means is that no one was pissed off and the food and drinks was delivered within the expected timeframe. Not bad for a place that was still busy at 10PM.
I'll be back just as soon as I recover from the second pitcher…
Restaurants come and go, but Sevilla has been a Village staple for as long as I remember. While not necessarily the best game in town, they're doing something right.
My daughter and I are one-trick-ponies when we go for Spanish: chicken villaroy, in essence the Spanish version of fried chicken, with béchamel sauce. A tad dry, but still very good. My husband's paella was excellent, with plenty of seafood and other goodies. My daughter's boyfriend ordered veal. She thought it tough, he said it was great.
Entrees come with salads and are plated with rice. Had a nice large pitcher of sangria, which was excellent. "Not too much ice," I said, and the bartender complied. Going old school Spanish we got guava shells with cream cheese for dessert — plenty for everyone to taste.
Though the restaurant was packed Saturday night — and boy, do they cram people in — our service was excellent. Never wanted for a thing. And an fyi: you can make a reservation. But I don't think the maître d checks; it appeared first come, first served.
My favorite place in NYC. Have been going here my entire life. My family started going here in the 70's. The favorite appetizer is the shrimp with green sauce. As a meal I love the seafood paella. It is absolutely delicious and by far the best paella I've had.
For dessert, the flan and cappuccino are my favorites. It is a small restaurant with a great feeling and ambiance.
I highly recommend going.
