Shadman Restaurant
“Yes, the food is on display and warmed in a microwave, but it still great.”
“Comments from my moderately FOB (Fresh Off the Boat) mother: Werrrry good achari (pickled spices) chicken and Haleem (shredded meat or chicken with lentil).”
“However, this place will always have the best chicken tikka masala I have ever had, and their poori and chana masala are a must on weekends.”

1 year ago I would have given this place 4 stars, 6 months ago I would have given it 3 but at this time as i am writing this restaurant's review for the first time, I can't justify more than 2 stars! We used to drive up from Manhattan to Jersey city to get food packed from Shadman. Food was excellent and price was great too. Just like all such places, food quality keeps changing and unfortunately the same happened here. Last week we got 3 dishes packed and all of them were pretty average to somewhat bad. We have decided not to go back again for some time atleast.
Realizing that a limited audience will be able to get here weekdays between 11 and 3, I want to note that the $8 buffet at that time is a great deal, providing a choice of around seven or eight dishes.
This is our go to place when I want some quick and delicious food on the way home from the train station. Despite the fact that the place looks like a fast food place with a lot of microwave, food here is surprisingly good. My favorite dishes are lamb curry with naan and stewed okra(?). Chicken and beef kebabs are amazing too, very flavorful and tender. We have tried free other dishes with chicken such as chicken curry, chicken biryani, they are just ok.
This place never fails to disappoint. The briyani is AMAZING here. Pop usually brings home kabobs and naans from here though. This restaurant has never once disappointed me. The food is great. It is a true to life dive. Little seating space and the decor is pretty bare. The food is what you concentrate on here. I recommend the following:
-Briyani
-Naan
-kabobs (chicken and beef)
Parking sucks here but what can you do, it's Jersey City bruh. Live with it.
Very good for the price !
The kababs are good, would have been better if they would have made it bit spicier. The gravy items are OK. The food is already prepared and kept on the counter, you just have to order and they heat it up in microwave and serve it with nan/rice.
Nothing much to speak about the ambiance. Its a take out kind of place with 4-5 tables.
Mostly a hit by me! I came here just looking for an interesting place to eat, not realizing it was a very, very casual/take-out kind of place. But that's sometimes the best food, and in this case, you'll find a diamond in the rough near Grove Street. I sampled a variety of the food, mostly the Pakistani styles, which I think is the origin of the owership and thus what I figured would be best. Sure enough, the chicken "kebab" and the beef/dough patty were superb appetizers. For the meal, I asked to split a special plate with the two kinds of beef available (you know those have to be Pakistani because Indian food never includes beef). They had very different flavors but both tasted delicious and very well flavored. My date ordered from the Indian side of the menu. The naan was underwhelming and the chicken/daal combination was also just average. So as much as I want to rate this place 5 stars for the Pakistan side, the India side is at most 3 stars. Stick to the dishes they know best.
Two meals, two appetizers, and a $4 liter of mango juice later, plus tip, I still came out on the light side of $30. An incredible value for great food. Just pick the right dishes and you'll never be unhappy here.
I'm new to Jersey City and hence don't know a lot of Indian restaurants where we get good kababs. As my apt shuttle took me to the Train station daily morning, I used to see the closed restaurant and then one day a week back I missed my regular shuttle back home and walked up and had dinner. I was not disappointed at all. The gorgeous helpful ladies behind the counter helped me choose the good stuff…if you don't like oily curries, stick with the kababs and paratha or naan. They also serve yummy mutton pulao which is different than biryani.
Kababs:
1. Shami kababs. Typically I avoid beef but slide these down. They are some of the best I have had so far in the US. I Request to have them made with goat meat too
2. Chicken Chapli kabab
3. Chicken Sheek kabab
Rice: They do have biryanis, but try the pulao if available
Oooopss…almost forgot the sweet section…in the refrigerator are the delish kheer..grab a portion and you will not be disheartened. The rice kheer is amazing. The sawai kheer was good, and had similar taste but the rice ones are almost like my moms (mom makes it a bit more thicker, and adds a special jaggery)
Overall a good clean place to get some lip smacking Indian food.
A friend recommended it as it was the closest one to his house for pakistani food. Fresh basic food but tasty. Their kebabs were great and very well marinated and cooked. Got a paratha, keema, haleem , chicken biryani and white rice. Perfectly cooked and amazing taste as mentioned. Enough place to sit and eat in peace also the service is great and aunty up front loves to take care of her customers.
one thing that i noticed here was the crows was very mixed people from all cultures were enjoying it. Dont expect your regular paki or indo spice level these are for everyone to enjoy.
