Although I am a proud supporter of In N Out, I think I have enough stomach to share the love between west coast and east coast. Shake Shack is a lot pricier, but they're making slightly more gourmet burgers and have a larger menu. I got the shroom burger, and the mushroom was thinly breaded and fried to perfection. The sauce was memorable – cheesy goodness mixing in with their special sauce.
A huge part of this 4-star rating are the frozen custards and shakes. The chocolate frozen custard was so flavorful and smooth, but it was really the coffee shake that will make you want to hit your daily caloric intake in one go. It's so, so good, make sure to buy this on your way in and out of JFK. It will have you coming back to NYC in no time.
With a 3 hour layover in JFK (which turned into 5 due to delays) I was anxious to get some food in me.
Burgers aren't usually my go-to airport meal, but they seem to be pretty common to find, and since I'd never been to a Shake Shack before, it seemed like a good time to try.
The line was pretty long to order, with an even longer line to pick up food, but I braved it anyways and took the time to really figure out what I wanted.
In the end I settled on the Chicken Burger and Fries, with a side of the secret Shack Sauce.
And then began the waiting game. They give you a pager to alert you when your food is ready, but it became apparent that the system was a little wonky and my pager buzzed a good 10 minutes before my food was ready.
Despite the waiting game, the food was pretty damn good, and the best part, the meal (no drink) was about $12 which is pretty unheard of for this kind of meal at the airport, so I was impressed.
The chicken "burger" was more like an encrusted chicken breast, but it came with a nice herbed aioli on potato bread and I loved it. The fries were standard fries and I didn't find anything too secret or special about the Shack Sauce, but it's a good sauce, just probably one you can find on most menus.
They have a portobello mushroom burger for non carnivores! Already, this is a great sign. We were in NYC for a long layover back to California and our terminal was right in front of this place. I have never even thought of this restaurant as an option because most burger places aren't my thing. I resolved myself to ordering an iced tea and fries. When I saw they offered a portobello mushroom burger I was ecstatic! My mushroom sandwich was awesome. The fries were good. My kids ordered regular burgers with meat patties and milk shakes The kids liked their burgers but did comment on portion size. They felt the burgers were small. Usually I post photos but my phone battery was dying and couldn't capture some shots. Now that I know they have veg options, I will definitely make it a point to visit other locations…not just the one in an airport out of convenience! Shake it up at Shake Shack!
I love that Shake Shack is now available inside the terminak at JFK! They also have a breakfast menu since they open at 6am (they actually opened around 5:40 when we were there though) but their breakfast burgers are on the small side.
