Was excited to find an all you can eat Sushi joint not too far away from where i live!
Things to keep in mind- they only allow you to have the all you can eat sushi for 90 Minutes…. consider that when bringing a bigger group. it was not a big deal for me and my fiance.
Upon entering the restaurant, I did not get the typical 'fishy' smell that always attacks you the second you walk into particularly dingy sushi restaurants. In fact, the air smelled fresh, and the decor was way more inviting than I thought it would be.
We sat at big spacious booths, and were immediately tended to. The restaurant was not busy at all. I think there was one or two other tables being used when we got there. I did like the menu and what was offered for the all-you-can-eat option.
The food was good overall, nothing incredible, but not bad at all. Im not sure if the purposely did not pay attention to what we wrote on the menu selection, but they did not give us at least a quarter of the items we wanted. Do they think we would not notice that?
The bigger issue however was the service. I mean the place never went passed having 5 tables at once (if that) when we were there. I had to flag down a waiter every single time we wanted water, or the check, or the next course…… it took us so long to get out of there. I think we spent more time waiting for the check and then waiting to pay then eating. It was weird… they kept walking passed us tending to other customers.
I really did like the restaurant location, and I liked the vibe. I would give it another shot!
All you can eat sushi in the bronx? For $20? Sounds sketch… … I'll take 3 boats please.
a group of 7 of us went when we heard that it's $20 AYCE sushi (it's like $22 on fri-sun) and we were not disappointed. they have a 90min time limit for ordering food, but don't worry too much cuz you can order as much as you want, and you can keep ordering until you're full.
And it's not just AYCE sushi.. it's AYCE for anything on that menu, which includes bubble tea, appetizers, chinese food, desserts, sashimi, soup, salad, etc… but don't fill up too much on the other stuff.
So we literally ordered every single special roll they had on their AYCE menu. TWICE. plus, we got some sashimi and other regular sushi rolls and pieces on side. hence, the 3 boats full of raw fish…
the salmon sashimi was suprisingly good! i didn't expect it to be fresh in the bronx, but not bad. Red snapper was okay too, but salmon was better. mackerel was eh. white tuna was a little weird…
the other rolls.. i can't really remember which ones were better because it all became a blur. but a lot of them were really similar. but they were all pretty good.
However, i actually would recommend not getting ALL of the special rolls like we did, because so many of them were similar (and most had shrimp tempura). shrimp tempura is good, but if u want some real sushi fish, order more off the sashimi and sushi sections too.
some non sushi foods that were good: rock and roll shrimp, general tso's chicken
udon was meh.
bubble tea: i tried both taro and thai tea. both were good, but a little too sweet. the tapioca balls were also a little too soft/mushy for my taste… but still good!
I recommend that you come with a large group. this way you can try a lot of different things.
they make you pay per pound for the food you don't finish, but the waitress was nice and didn't make us pay even though we had a few pieces leftover.. we were so full.
Get full or die tryin.
Came here with 4 friends for dinner. Pretty cool Sushi spot in the Bronx. $21 for all you can eat Japanese, including dessert. We ordered a bunch of things & shared it amongst us. Edamame, dragon rolls, boston, California, General Tsoa chicken, shumai, gyoza,- just to name a few things on our list. I had a Thai bubble tea as well. Not too crazy abt tapioca pearls, but it still tasted pretty good. Service was great! Waiters were very attentive. Food was perfect as far as taste and portions. Would definitely return!
Had lunch here after a long & vigorous hike around Pelham Bay Park! Me & my girlfriend chose to do the all you can eat option for $21.95 a person. The only rule was you had to eat everything you order or else they would charge you for it by the lbs. Beware people with small appetites! We ordered a mixture of main entrees dishes & sushi! Chicken Teriyaki, Shrimp, Chicken Tempura Roll, Avocado Eel Roll, & Sunflower Roll. All were delicious. Waiters were attentive, place was clean, and was not full of people on a Saturday afternoon so no wait. Come here if you need a quick but hefty fix on Asian cuisine. Would love to come back to try their other entrees. Their regular dinner menu is a lot large than the limited all you can eat menu. I will definitely be coming back!
This is my personal favorite place to eat. They got me with the buffet but kept me because there soup is crazy. The Tom young soup is to die for. Their tuna tartar is freaking awesome. I've been eating sushi for some time and this place is now number 1 to me. The waiters were also cool. The area is blah but it's nice inside.
As much as I hate to drop a star on this establishment, it must be done! I've been coming here for a couple of years and they started off really well. But slowly but surely their service has been getting worse by the visit.
Last night I was so irritated by how cold it was in the restaurant. You know there is a problem when half of your customers are eating in their coats. That's just not acceptable. I was so cold, I couldn't eat my food. The worst part is, you can't take it to go if you order off of the AYCE menu.
I brought this up to the staff person's attention and he said they would turn the heat on. Say WHAT! It's 34 degrees out and you're JUST going to turn the heat on. It should be on regardless. Why do you have the A/C on full blast? I understand that the staff are running around and it can't be too hot but we're paying customers. I was so cold, I couldn't finish my food.
At this rate, I need to find another local favorite.
I was in the Bronx, and my girlfriend said she had been to this restaurant before. Being an asian foodie, I figured she had found another gem of a place for us to dine at. No. Here's the breakdown of the tragic event.
Sushi (2/5) I eat sushi approximately once a week. I always order the same thing: salmon and california rolls. At Shangerila, the rolls are incredibly small, and mostly rice. It's a terrible feeling to shell out $5.50 at Shangerila for a roll I pay $5 elsewhere, and still manage to get less fish.
Red Curry (1/5) The chicken and vegetables were swimming in the red curry sauce. Again, this is a staple of mine…so I know how it's supposed to taste. Frankly, the sauce didn't even taste like it was a coconut milk base. It tasted so rich, my girlfriend and I think they use cream. Yes, you read that correctly. The sauce was also too salty, and not spicy at all. Red curry shouldn't leave you thirsty from salt. It should leave you slightly sweaty from the heat.
Service (1/5) The service was terrible. My girlfriend had to get the waiter from the back because he wouldn't come up to check on us. When I went to the bathroom, I noticed that ALL five employees were having intense text-message conversations…or were deeply focused on phone games. I can't imagine the owner was present, because that is a huge no-no.
My girlfriend tried the $21.95 buffet for sushi to see if that was something we should frequent the restaurant for. It sounds a lot better than it played out though. The rolls were almost entirely rice. Also, they put so much sauce on the specialty rolls that they were, for the most part, un-edible.
Bottom line: If you're thinking about going to Shangerila; Stop, drop, and roll away.
Hmm, pretty empty on a Saturday. Had the entire restaurant to ourselves. #worried
Sticky tables. The chairs felt very dirty! Where are the Lysol wipes? #frown
Waitress couldn't describe what's in the entrée dish. #Fail.
Nice interior design. #interesting
Asian-fusion restaurant. #gofigure
I ordered the Sushi Regular (7 pcs sushi w. 1 califonia roll served with miso soup & salad) $16.95 – overpriced! Salad is meh. Too watery. Too little dressing. Miso soup got a passing grade. The 7 pieces of fish did not tasted that fresh. There was an aftertaste and I used a load of wasabi too! The sushi rice needed more rice vinegar. Bleh.. It tasted like regular rice! The california roll was what I enjoyed out of the entire dish. Sadly, I was still hungry! Wasted my $16.95, seriously. The highlight was just the cute sushi layout on the plate. #disappointed
OK, maybe the sushi did not bring it on, but the entrées certainly did. My sister, brother-in-law, and the fiancé all ordered entrées served with rice – Shangerila Beef, Shredded Pork w. Garlic Sauce, and Sauteed Eggplant. And their entrees tasted so much better – flavorful, delicious, unique, and fulfilling! Perhaps, I should have ordered kitchen food too. #sigh
In this case, it is 2 stars from me and 3 stars from them.
Therefore, the verdict – 2.5 stars! #fairgrade
Note: I might consider going back for the entrées but definitely NOT THE SUSHI. #byebye
