Popped by on Saturday, they have extra space in the store next to them now, and in the back. We sat in the back, which was good with three kids wailing their way around the area… probably better that we disturbed fewer.
New dishes tried:
-Soy milk (sweet & hot) w/ fried dough – was good enough to satisfy an itch, they also do cold and not sweet.
-Crab w Chili Sauce wasn't too spicy, but it was a good cracking on the teeth as you gnawed through the dish. Not a lot of meat, but as my friend said, probably good as a drinking dish.
-山药炒黑木耳, which is a mountain yam with black mushroom, was better than expected
-上海苗 was very standard
-红烧咸蛋黄狮子头 Lion head meatballs w/ egg in them – loved for people that enjoy the preserved egg yolk; I'm not one of them
-巨无霸 Shaved ice was delicious, a good bunch of toppings, and this is one time where I actually said there wasn't enough ice!
They also have hotpot – we'll try that another time!
I thought I would not come back again. It had been a long while since my last visit. Today my boyfriend and I wanted to go to Grand Sichuan but they closed down for kitchen remodeling. So we ended up here. Ordered a new Sichuan dish they offered and it was super salty. The waitress tried a piece and said she didn't think so. We insisted and got it changed. The replacement was still really salty. We had to dip every piece of chicken in the tea before eating it. We are officially done with this place. If you have to come here, stick with breakfast food and simple dishes here. Don't be adventurous.
The food was tasty and the service was excellent. For the type of ingredients and preparation necessary for the dishes, the prices were reasonable. Portion size was above average.
Be prepared for a decent amount of sauce/gravy. All three items we ordered (tilapia, braised chicken with chestnuts and beef balls with egg yolk) came with dark thick sauces.
My only criticism is the hot (mostly cold) tea. Because they use a regular open pitcher for refill, we kept getting lukewarm tea.
This is our go-to Chinese food delivery place in JC. When we first moved to JC, I feverishly consulted Yelp regarding the local Chinese restaurants. It was imperative that I find my new "go-to" Chinese place. I initially was reluctant to try Shanghai Best because of the mediocre reviews, but after seeing that they had Lamb Hotpot with Soup on the menu, I've decided that I must try it. I am really glad that I've gave it a chance, because the dish was great and so has most of the other dishes I've tried. I need to qualify this review by saying that I've actually never eaten in before, only delivery.
Lamb Hotpot with Clear Soup – as mentioned above, this was the dish that prompted me to try this restaurant. It's rare to see this dish in Chinese restaurants. It is basically a soup with thinly sliced lamb, glass noodles and cabbage. It's the perfect dish for a cold windy night. It's also my go-to dish when I am not feeling well (i.e. the Chinese version of chicken noodle soup)
Braised Whole Tilapia with Bean Sauce – my second favorite dish here. It's a bit pricey ($26), but worth it if split between two people. The fish is super tender and the sauce is delicious, perfect with rice. Given the fact that it is a whole fish, there are bones, but it's mostly just the central skeleton, which is easy to remove.
Beef with Chili Pepper – the beef is so tender and flavorful. Yes, it is spicy, but not overwhelming, and another great dish to eat with rice.
Not all of the dishes we've tried here have been successful, most notably the congee, however the good heavily outweighs the bad. Also, despite the fact that it is called Shanghai Best, it also has some great Sichuan dishes, namely the beef with chili pepper dish. The dishes are on the pricey side for a typical Chinese restaurant, but I am willing to pay more for good food. Lastly, all of the deliveries we had have came pretty fast. Highly recommend it!
We came here for dim sum with our buddies (all Chinese folks) and ended up happily satisfied. The soup dumplings (Xiao Long Bao) were good and didn't take forever to come. The rice noodle crepes were on point as were the siu mai. You must make decent versions of those staples otherwise you have no business playing the dim sum game. This is our new go to dim sum joint in northeast NJ.
I love love love this place! Great for big groups because you want to SHARE all your dishes family style! And the best soup dumplings in NJ! The food is very authentic and inexpensive. Staff is not high end, but you wouldn't expect it to be so in a Chinese restaurant. I've never had to wait as there's plenty of seating here! I've dined in as well as gotten takeout. Definitely dine in- the portions are bigger!
Must trys:
– Pork soup dumplings
– Scallion pancake with beef
– braised beef noodle soup
– chicken soup
NY diners skeptical of "comparable NYC soup dumplings offerings," can be pleasantly surprised by Jersey City's only Shanghai restaurant (auto two stars because of this). Menu is ambitious with mouth watering dishes to choose from. The food itself – besides the soups dumplings – is ok. Do not order the hot sweet soybean drink, it is ALWAYS burnt.
Since my previous review, I've ordered from this restaurant a few more times and haven't had any problems. Their food really is delicious! One of the most authentic in the area; reminds me of growing up in Shanghai.
