Shanghai Mong
“The ja jang myun + jjang ppong combination is the MOST SATISFYING TASTE OF HEAVEN in Ktown late at night.”
“Whereas Hyo Dong Gak recreates the traditional restaurant atmosphere of Korea, Shanghai goes for a bit of a modern touch in addition to Chinese-influences.”
“I recommend the tang soo yook (sweet and sour beef) and the kkang ppong gi (spicy chicken) as entrees.”

Mm!mm!mmm!!! Wet here on a whim and took advantage of the lunch special. They are known for their noodles so 2 out of the 3 of us have it a try and it was absolutely delightful.
To start off, our server was super adorable, patient and helpful in providing suggestions and explaining the dishes. The staff was very friendly and made our time there very pleasant. The reggae and calypso was also a nice touch
The food was soooo good. Thank god that sharing is caring cause I was going in on my friends plates Lolol. Everyone's food was delicious and well worth breaking my diet for a day!
The lunch special prices were really good and the portions were filling. The regular priced items averages about 30.00 a dish— it's New York.
3.5 stars
A couple of years ago, I learned from my Korean friend that ja jang myun is a comfort food, one that can be whipped up quickly and cheaply, sometimes with leftovers that are then coated with its thick black bean paste. Since then, I occasionally feel the need to eat ja jang myun the same way other people crave for white rice or mac n cheese. There's just something about the slickness of the noodles and the flavor of the sauce that reels me in.
Shanghai Mong is a Chinese and Korean fusion restaurant frequented by a diverse crowd. Of course I ordered the ja jang myun and loved it. Their banchan is unfortunately limited to 3 dishes (edadame, radish, and kimchi). We also ordered other fusion items off their menu but I was too busy enjoying my ja jang myun ($9, $12 for seafood) to try them. Their spring rolls were pretty good and all 4 rolls were complimentary with a single Yelp check-in! That's pretty generous since I was only expecting 1 spring roll haha
It was kinda empty when my friends and I got in. The waitress was so nice and patient.
We girls was confused about what we want, changes what we choose, one of us need to leave early, so she didn't order anything. So the waitress complained nothing and offered sharing bowl for my friend.
I ordered the spicy seafood noodles. It comes with big portion. The soup is tasty and right amount of spicy. They are not mean with the seafood they offer in the bowl! I absolutely love the thick egg noodles! So delicious.
We were taking our time eating and chilling there, the waitress wasn't rush to let us leave. Maybe also coz there's not many customers in the restaurant. Lol
We had good time and delish food. I definitely would love to go back.
A terrible choice for Chinese/Korean food. Food and service were both subpar.
First off, no onions and radish after you place your order. Those are stalwarts of Chinese/Korean starter appetizers that work into the main course itself. Portion sizes for both jajangmyun and jjamppong were incredibly small. Jajamyun was the better dish of the two, doesn't mean anything besides it was better than a crappy dish. The jjamppong was overly salty and soup was lukewarm. Also missing from the dish was the usual large shrimp with head and tail. In substitute were the tiny frozen shrimps. That wasn't a strong move by management. No candied sweets at the end of the meal, another staple missing in addition to the onion/radish.
Service was slow, asked for water twice before receiving it. Never got the hot tea, didn't bother asking again. They was quick with plopping down the check to get rid of you.
I don't know how I feel about the live opera on Mondays lol BUT the dish I ordered that was served for two people was delish. Jjamppong Soondubu was a hotpot dish for two that was spicy with lots of seafood. They were very generous with the seafood and the noodles they used was the perfect density. I almost drank the entire soup base. I wish I can just steal the recipe and make my own ramen at home with the same flavors. Interesting Shanghai Korean fusion at this spot.
I came here for dinner with my sister on a Saturday around 6pm. She had been here before and enjoys the jja jang myun. I ordered the bibimbop. Overall the food was OK, I was not blown away – it satiated our hunger. I did like the spring roll that we got for checking in on Yelp.
Good food for a good price! One of the cheapest Korean restaurants in Koreatown. It's a mix of Korean and Chinese food so you can get the best of both worlds. They have big dishes so you can do family style if you come with a group of friends.
Fusion? I hate fusion, but friends walked out of place down the street (service and seating issue) so ended up here. There's Korean things on the menu but the pho and pad Thai throws me off.
Small plate of banchan for 4 – pickled yellow radish, Kim chi and onions? Seafood japchae came with steamed buns? Jjam jja myung was good – spicy and comforting pmsoup with lots of noodles. Jja jang myung lacked a bit of flavor compared to a few doors down. Bibimbap comes with seafood or chicken? Friends enjoyed each though.
A lot of other diners ordered tangsuhyuk (Korean sweet and sour) which looked good. I'm too confused to come back I think?
