$7 lunch specials, ftw!
Well, my lunch came out to $8.50, BUT it was all worth it! I got a big bowl of soup and two entrees with brown rice. The line is long during lunch hour, but it goes by relatively fast. I was in and out in about 5-6 minutes, no biggie.
There's a good selection of entrees to choose from and two kinds of soups of choice. The cashier guy is too sweet, he's very friendly. I got my lunch to-go, but there are tables available if you want to dine in. And of course, because the place was packed, people were sharing tables which isn't that big of a deal.
The sole great thing about this restaurant is its cheap price.
Apart from that, I have only two words for you in regards to this Chinese eatery: MSG overload.
Really unhealthy and gross. Since I intend on leading a healthy life style as I'm getting older and wiser, I will make more responsible decisions by staying away from this place even though it's literally right across the street from my office.
I like Shih Lee because fast, cheap and tasty. Ambiance is meh, so it would be better to order to go if you are alone. It is good to come with friends who doesn't care about ambiance. However, the seats are very close to each other. When I was eating alone, stranger sit in front of me and my chair and the char of the person who sat next me was hitting each other.
However, $7.50 lunch is reasonable in this area. It comes with rice and two entrees. You can choose brown rice, too. It is filling and satisfying for me.
Cheap lunch specials and we got it on the weekend too, unlike a lot of other places!
Nice to see a cheaper Chinese take-out in this neighborhood that is actually really good! Definitely plan on returning.
I still like this place, but holy cow is the Pork Adobo fatty. And it has bones, which I wasn't thrilled about. It's still a good deal, but be wary!
I went in at an odd hour, for dinner by myself. I was the only diner in there but they clearly do a big take out business. They were really nice to me and I got a lot of food for pretty cheap. I had really basic American Chinese food dishes – dumplings, wonton soup, chicken and broccoli. Everything was fine if a bit bland. That's all I was looking for so I was satisfied.
Both cheap and tasty, Shih Lee Good Eats is a great place to grab a quick lunch! Yesterday, I came here for the first time with a coworker, and I immediately became a fan. Selecting the ma po tofu with a side of white rice and bean sprouts, it was also more than my fill. I'll definitely be back!
My partially consumed order of chicken wings and beef tendon soup sits before me as I write this review.
Rather than pure unbridled love, Cupid has seen fit this year to strike me down with influenza. I figured since I was doomed to stay home alone tonight, I could at least try out a new restaurant via delivery. Always on the lookout for good Chinese food near my neighborhood, I decided to give Shih Lee a try. Although the majority of the reviews on Yelp have been mediocre, a couple have boasted it as the best Chinese restaurant in Manhattan. If you live in Murray Hill, you know how hard good Chinese is to come by around here and thus my willingness to entertain the smallest of hopes for a decent Beef Noodle Soup.
The process of ordering over the phone was a little painful. The man definitely had ESL (English as a Second Language) and took entirely too long to get my phone number and address down correctly. It's experiences like this that makes Seamless so lucrative.
The food arrived in about 20 minutes just as the man had promised. The delivery guy, like most delivery guys in New York, handed you your food looking like you had just murdered his family. Faceless silence as he snatches your tip and runs off into the night.
When you order noodle soup, it's generally understood that the soup and noodle will be separated so that the noodles do not become soggy. Shih Lee was not aware of this and as a result, I became a victim of soggy noodles. The broth had a somewhat strange taste. There was some beef flavor, but there was also a little something else that was not altogether beef.
The chicken wings were very plump and juicy. However, it also came dripping with more grease than a Jheri curl. It was unfortunate that they placed the wings inside a foil bag. The steam had softened what I assume was once a crispy layer of skin. The chicken also had the same weird taste that was detected in the beef broth. It must be something in the wok that they cook with. Perhaps a little cleaning is in order?
Overall, yet another disappointment in the culinary barrens of Murray Hill.
