Shilla Bakery

“Besides bread, they also have hot food like sandwich, corn dog, etc.

For winter, they have this pan-fried fish cake with red bean inside (mini size of Japanese taiyaki).”

“It always seems to be packed, mainly due to being in the center of Broad Ave, which also makes parking nearly impossible.”

“I've yet to try the coffee, I think I will on my next visit the aroma keeps calling me.”

  1. After eating dinner from across the street…we needed to kill some time so we tried some ice coffee and Pot-bing-soo here.

The ice they used is more like "ice grounds" rather than "ice shaving".
The black beans paste they used though had some pretty good flavor. It seemed to me that it wasn't overly sweet. I think it may have been the first time I actually enjoyed eating all that "pot"

Only reason I didn't enjoy the stay was the place was a bit too warm for a hot day. You really can't have a business and not have a fully functional air conditioner…and having fans is just so 1980's. Perhaps their AC just broke, or a ploy to get folks to buy more pot-bing-soo. ha ha ha  j/k

    Otherwise you typical Shilla experience.

  2. Just like any other place, this place offers bakery selections, drinks and spacious tables to talk after a meal, or study.  The fatal flaw of this place compared to others is that they don't have wifi.  While it may not be a big deal to some people, it could be a biggest turn off to at least some crowd considering everybody has smartphone, tablet or a laptop anywhere you are.

My shaved ice was decent with reasonable price, but I didn't see the point of the shell they used as the plate for the shaved ice.  It was too hard, and didn't taste good, and didn't really match with the shaved ice.

  3. They have a large bakery and tea coffee selection. The prices were good and the service friendly.

The place is well kept but the design is starting to look a little dated but not old.

    Overall I recommend it.

  4. I'm not sure how this bakery still stands on broad ave with all the big name bakeries nearby because the coffee tastes worse than Dunkin Donuts and the bread is cold and stale. The two stars is for their convenience, but other than that, it's not worth it to go for bread and coffee here.

  5. Love their vanilla iced lattes! They serve a variety of Korean pastries that are baked daily. It's not as sleek or fancy looking as Paris Baguette or Tous Les Jour – in fact, the store looks a little dated in comparison – but their coffee and pastries are on point. Free wi-fi!

  6. Fish bread and Korean pancake! "Fish bread" meaning the hot pastry with red bean paste and "Korean pancake" meaning the sticky bread with red bean and walnut filling that you find in the winter streets in Korea.

I would honestly say that the other bread/pastries there are about 2-star quality. You can buy similar items at other major Korean bakeries that taste much, much better.

  7. Free wifi alert!!
Never really had the pastries, only came here for  drinks (coffee, chocolate).
Seems to be a pretty ok coffee shop where you still can hold a conversation (I've been to some other really noisy ones around).
Also a great people-watching spot if you sit by the front glass window

  8. I come here for their atypical beverages. I really like the Misugaru frozen bubble tea, which is a Korean multigrain beverage that is protein packed and a healthier option then the other typical flavors.  It's nutty, milky, and just the right amount of sweetness.  Great for breakfast on the go as well.

I've also had the sweet potato latte.  It taste like a real sweet potato with actual bits.  I felt I was drinking a soup rather then a beverage.  So it wasn't exactly what I was looking for.

As far as their baked goods, I've had their red bean pastries from the shelf as well as their mochi donuts and I must say, they were not the freshest.  I've usually come here in the late afternoon or evenings and perhaps the best time for freshness is the morning?

In the fall they sell the pancakes stuffed with red bean in the shape of a fish.  These are made to order so they're fresh.  They told me it was a long wait, so I couldn't get it. I've also tried to get it during the summer and they told me it is seasonal, so I couldn't get it.  I guess it's not meant to be.
