  1. Came here to get my samgyupsal on and it satisfied.  They don't give you a lot of side dishes, but they were all different from other Korean restaurants I've been to which was refreshing.  They had a nice salad, mushrooms, fried zucchini, just to name a few.

The samgyupsal was more expensive than other places, $25, but the portion was pretty good and it comes with kimchi and bean sprouts that are cooked on this huge dome shaped pan.  Soju was also $5 which is pretty awesome.

Overall a good experience.  Service was okay and the food satisfying.

  2. When I came here about 6 years ago, I was not happy.  That's in the past now!
The present:  new owner, new staff, better food.

Guys… I'm telling you right now, forget about anything else on the menu but you MUST try this: Sot Ddo Kong Sam Gyup Sal.  If you need me to write it out in Korean for you to show the wait staff, feel free to send me a PM.

It's literally translated as "pot's lid pork belly" meaning they cook the mean on a lid.  So this comes with two servings of pork belly, delicious salad, romaine lettuce, garlic slices and the soy bean sauce, soy bean soup, Korean steamed eggs and of course, banchan!  They also serve rice paper (it's super hot because I think they had it in the steamer…).  That rice paper is so worth it!

Don't be so surprised if you see some fat because it's going to make your pork very tender and delicious!  They have this delivered from another part of the country so the meat is not local.

On the "pot's lid" they cook the pork belly (they'll cut it smaller before you're about to eat) and they also threw on some soy bean sprouts and kimchi.  Want my advice?  Forget the romaine lettuce.  Just wrap the meat and some of the cooked kimchi in some rice paper.  It's the perfect combination!

In the end, when you're just feeling like you're satisfied, ask for two bowls of rice (depending on your party) and ask them to fry it up for you on the lid.  It's the perfect ending!  I literally can not wait to go back and have some more of this good stuff!

  3. I finally got to try this place since I heard about it on a YouTube video from Off The Great Wall. I tried their infamous pork BBQ. You have to order at least two orders which are about $23 each, which is a steal for Korean BBQ. It came with the two types of wraps, bean sprouts and kimchi, all cooked in front of us. Then the sides came and one was japchae, which Is usually an order on its own. Then kimchi pancake came out, I liked it but my bf didn't and they also gave beef soonduboo. So much food and definitely worth the price! Then as dessert, they gave us pumpkin cinnamon juice, which was tasty. I will be back!

  4. Came here for post work out meal and got us the meat combo. It was a surprising amount of meat. I believe the meat combo was like $90 and along with some other items it fed a group of 4.

The pajun was ok (could have done without ordering this) but the budae jjiggae was pretty good.

Overall the meal hit the spot, which was evident by the fact that we practically waddled out of there only to get home in time for the food coma.

  5. I was excited to come here because I love grilled pork belly (samgyupsal) and I love grilling it together with kimchi and bean sprouts.

When we walked in, there was a slight delay in getting recognized and I remember noting that but we were seated pretty shortly thereafter so I did not think much to it. You get two options when you're seated: grilling or non-grilling. We chose grilling and ordered the pork belly.

While ordering, we spoke pretty clearly IN KOREAN about wanting a soup on the side. We ended up order the galbitang as the side. It would've been nice if the waiter and waitress (both came by) told us the pork belly order comes with a complimentary stew. The stew came out first so we tried canceling the soup but it was too late. So we asked to pack it to go (when I ate the soup at home, it was a bit too salty).

The food came and their banchans were decent. They had this rice wrap thing that is used to wrap the pork belly, sauce and veggies which was something different but good. The portion was decent and the complimentary soup hit the spot. On numerous occasions, we finished our ice-filled cups of waters and we'd place them at the end of the table but we continually got no attention. When we were done, we pressed the bell numerous times to get the staffs' attention and even waving towards the cashier did not help. I swear, the girl must have chronic blindness!

Eventually, we'd get the check and cash out. If you've been to a Korean restaurant, you'd know that the staffs typically greets you and says goodbye as you leave. As we were walking out, I was thinking, "are they really not going to say bye and thank you?" As soon as we walked outside, my girl thought the same exact thing.

Food is obviously important but sometimes, the service and overall experience takes the cake. At the end of the day, Shilla had good culinary offerings but at least half the staff looks like kids in high school and even the older workers were too busy conversing with their regulars to take care of us. The one lady even realized we were first timers and still, we received no special attention which we don't deserve but I'd still want to impress at the very least).

Food alone would make me give this place around 4-5 stars but with the frustrating service, I'm giving this place a 2 star rating.
