Average Japanese cuisine. Disappointedly I find the restaurants in Downtown Manhattan are just average as it does not entice my interest. The staff is somewhat attentive and friendly, but it does compromise quality of food and how they prepare.
Great lunch combos to go, for a reasonable price. Salmon nigiri portions are particularly generous and tasty! Bit cramped whilst you wait, which I imagine is less fun for those dining in.
Totally dug this spot when I ducked in for lunch on a very random wintery day. Its very unassuming from the outside, but as always Yelp steered me in the direction of a quality sushi lunch special when I so desperately needed one. Inside there are only a handful of tables and a small row of seats at the sushi bar. For such a small place, they seemed well-staffed with two waitresses and two sushi chefs in front and what I assume were more cooks in the back for the hot items. The place was clean and quiet and had that well-worn old school feeling that I so love in bars and diners but have yet to have seen at a sushi spot! If I lived or worked in the area I'd probably come all the time.
They offer a 2 or 3 roll lunch special that comes with miso soup. I had the spicy tuna and the tempura sweet potato and both were totally spot on. The spicy tuna even had some real heat to it, which is sadly rare at many of the spots I've been to in NYC. Service was quick and incredibly friendly. I ordered a hot tea and it was constantly refilled from a fresh, steaming pot. They also seem to have quite a bit of delivery and pick up going on, but they handle things so smoothly it doesn't get too crowded inside or disturb the chill ambiance.
We got a gigantic platter and I was unhappy with most of it. I'm addicted to sashimi, and my craving ultimately went unsatisfied. The portions were small. A few things were still nearly frozen. They load the plates with tons of radish and lettuce, intentionally deceptive. When you order 40 pieces of sashimi, it is unacceptable that 10 of them be egg and 10 of them be fake crab and the rest all come in small inconsistent poorly prepared portions.
never coming back here again.
the fish isn't fresh and the salmon taste like gelatin. The sashimi is sliced way too thick. The rice wasn't fresh and was hard, seems like it was left out for a long time. the rolls are sloppy, falls apart easily.
Though it is cheap and very fast with the takeout orders, this place is not worth my time and money.
