Gotta love Yelp… I was in the mood for some Hibachi and didn't feel like trekking into the city (or long island) for Benihana when I yelped this place and noticed it was only a quick drive away.
I'm a fan, it's local, it's convenient with a parking garage just outside.
I will keep this place in my back pocket for the future. It's a nice place when you have a large party.
Yummy hibachi place at a slightly cheaper price point than Benihana. I would say that Benihana is a bit higher quality, but the food is never bad here. Overly generous glasses of wine, they literally filled it up to the brim. I usually order the edemame and shrimp shumai appetizers, but they give you so much food it really is not necessary. My go to entree is the shrimp and scallop combo- the seafood is always extremely flavorful and the mustard dipping sauce they give is out of this world…I could probably drink the stuff. The hibachi dinners are always accompanied by a small salad, onion soup, choice of bean sprouts or noodles and mixed veggies- I'm craving it all just writing this. Definitely on my rotating roster of restaurants!
A flare of shocking disappointment
Note: Before I go head first into my review I will note that I have eaten at their restaurant and eaten at their station is a local cafeteria (shows up once a week).
I am giving the restaurant 2.25 Stars and the 3.5 Stars to the station at the cafeteria.
Food: 1.75 Stars
Having eaten at their station before the restaurant I was very excited when I went to Shiro's a few weeks ago and I left bitterly disappointed.
The sushi was fresh as it usually is. I only had a spicy tuna roll, but it was fresh and the ginger they provided was zangy (I guess that would be the best word for it) and the soy sauce was light so it didn't overpower the sushi.
As I usually do I went straight for the Hibachi tables with my friends looking for good food and a show. The food was as dry and tasteless as the show.
I had steak and shrimp with fried rice. The shrimp was cooked well, but the steak was tough and chewy. I only had two pieces that didn't remind me of chewing gum (Meat was Medium Rare)
The worst was the fried rice. It was dry and bland. The hibachi chef seemed to be more interested in talking to his "regular" customers rather than paying attention to what was going on the grill forgetting to add ingredients to the rice and leaving it on the grill for an extended period of time.
The starting salad and soup were standard for most hibachi restaurants
Drinks: 3.5 Stars
The drinks have a nice variety. I particularly enjoyed the Triple Orange which had a nice overly alcoholicesque (I don't think that's a word) bite to it. If I return to Shiro's I'll be sure to try more or their drink menu.
Service: 3.5 Stars
While the Hibachi Show was a spectacular disappointment. The servers were quick with taking orders and bringing food/drinks.
Our chef, while doing a decent job cooking, didn't make a slash with my group performance-wise. He seemed to be more interested in talking with regular customers than cooking. The other tables looked far more entertaining and fun especially when the chef interacted with the customers.
Ambiance: 4 Stars
Shiro of Japan is a rather large restaurant with a multitude of hibachi and regular tables. The decor is standard American-Japanese. The noise level isn't too loud. Overall these is nothing bad here,
Overall: 2.75 Stars
The sushi at Shiro excels above many Japanese restaurants. I highly recommend coming here to try their rolls.
Depending on who you get as a Hibachi chef, it can be a severe hit or miss. I have encountered a big miss where the quality of food was sub-par and the show I paid extra for was a disappointment.
I hope the next time I go to Shiro my experience will be different.
I been here on a few occasions but have always forgot to review it. I even celebrated my birthday here about four years ago.
My review is only for the hibachi side since I have never ate sushi here. There is something really fun about hibachi since its like dinner and a show.
I been here with just one person and also in a large group and they have always been really nice and the experiences have always been great.
I always get either chicken or steak teriyaki since it's pretty good here with some fried rice.
Is the food here the best food no but it's good and you come more for the whole experience.
Very nice hibachi restaurant. The ginger sauce was delicious. The crew was very nice. The food was delicious minus the noodles. Although, that was their only downfall. They did quite well. Tried three different drinks. Not as. The scallops were DELICIOUS and plump. Yum. Will definitely return.
Came for a late lunch for a family member's birthday.
Even with our reservation, it took awhile for our party of 12 (+3 kids under 5) to be seated; the staff seemed a bit overwhelmed and confused by us even though the restaurant was relatively empty; and as I mentioned, we made a reservation.
Prices seemed a little high (I am spoiled by a great/cheap hibachi place in Westchester) but the portions turned out to be more than enough with leftovers so it worked out.
Waiters completely forgot a couple of drink orders and it was hard to get their attention when we needed a refill.
OK so done with all the semi-negative things; the hibachi chef was great, very friendly and the kids loved him.
Food itself was tasty; I got scallops and they were a nice size and perfectly cooked. Can't go wrong with fried rice and the noodles & veggies were delicious also.
Overall a fun A-OK afternoon.
This location is amazing! I usually go to the one on old country road, but decided to try this location out since i was already out there. The interior decor was gorg & the service was great. I LOVE hibachi food & this place justified it even more, granted the shiro in garden city is just as good but i am shocked at how well kept this location is. The food was obvi delicious & our cook was super friendly & funny. Drinks were great too.
Place would've got a 5 had the service been much better they were probally understaff. But the food was awesome, place is huge and the manager gave us complimentary shrimp tempura and zuchini for the drinks taking so long. Very nice of him to have done that. Overall really nice experience and they also have a great happy hour 5 dollar on their special drinks and draught beer. They also have a special when you show them your ticket stubs from the Atlas Movie theatre a meal of 29.95 for 2. Pretty sweet deal.
