  1. Came to Short Grain on a nice Saturday to try their brunch. You go up to the counter, order and pay, grab a seat and then the waitress will bring you your food. Pretty simple! The inside was completely crowded and honestly had a strange smell to it – so we decided to sit in the itty bitty outdoor seating section. The tables and chairs they provide are a little wobbly, just so ya know.

Food — we ordered the lemon ricotta hotcakes and the avocado toast with an egg. The pancakes were perhaps the most amazing brunch item I have ever consumed. Slightly sweet, hints of lemon, creamy from the ricotta and topped with fresh strawberry and blueberry. A total hands-down brunch item winner! The avocado toast was also good (albeit somewhat overpriced) but the bread wasn't toasted and it could have used a hint of more flavor. But no doubt, the food was awesome!

For a vegetarian, there weren't many food items. It was basically the two things we got and cauliflower. Yes, their menu is tiny but I'd love to see a vegetarian sandwich on their menu!

Drinks — we ordered everything to stay and our coffee and tea were given in paper and plastic cups, which was a major downfall, would have much preferred a mug. My boyfriend is a coffee addict and said the coffee was quite terrible. Hopefully they get their drink game under control because other Yelpers are crazy for their coffee… missing consistency?

  2. When I'm in downtown Jersey City, Short Grain is my favorite place to grab a quick bite to eat and grab a coffee. I've had the coconut curry chicken sandwich, which is definitely big enough to fill you up (but you'll still want more because it's so good).

What really brings me in, though, is the Vietnamese cold brew. It is a tad sweet, but is wonderfully spiced so it's a great little vacation from plain old cold brew.

I also really appreciate that they put a water bowl outside for dogs, so my pup can have a drink while I'm sipping on some cold brew.

  3. *avocado toast (This was by far the blandest avocado toast I've ever had. I don't think they seasoned the avocado at all. Bread was ok, but it would have been better if they buttered it and threw it on the griddle so it would provide a nice crunch/contrast to the avocado. This was not worth the money)
*roasted cauliflower (I don't know why people are raving about this. I thought it was just OK. The veggie itself was a bit soft and without the sauce to dip, there would have been absolutely no flavor at all. The golden raisins were surprisingly good and went well with the cauliflower. However, still not really good and don't understand what the other folks are raving about)

This place is tiny but cute. You order at the counter and pick a seat. There is minimal seating so take out may be a better option, especially on a weekend. Because it's an open kitchen, you will come out smelling like food s be prepared for that. I have been meaning to try this place based on its reviews. After my dining experience, I am trying really hard to understand why people like it so much. Maybe I should try other menu items, but the menu is already limited so not sure what I should order that may suggest this restaurant deserves 4.5 stars. Don't think I'll be back.

  4. Stopped here to get a quick brunch, this place is pretty amazing. We had their. Cortado which is second to none. They have all the usual espresso suspects. Also I find their menu options comparable to any good cafe in Manhattan. I had the red juice, they also had a green juice. The red juice was decent. Then I had the avocado toast with an egg on top.  It was amazing. A simple dish very well executed. I didn't get to taste a lot of the menu because it was just me eating. I will definitely be back when I am in the hood to give it a try again. It's a great place to get a cuppa coffee and some lunch.

  5. I can't comment too much because I've only been here a couple of times for coffee, and was in and out pretty quickly. But with that said, I must say that I've enjoyed my visits and will most likely continue to come back to try more of their menu.

I've only had the Americano and almond croissant (baked by Balthazar), but very high quality products. The Americano tastes very good, not bitter at all. Definitely wakes me up quick! And the croissant was soft, flakey, almondy happiness that complemented my coffee very well.

The woman at the counter on Saturday mornings is very friendly and informative.

The café itself is small, but comparable to many other locally-owned coffee shops in the area. A decent amount of seating, but definitely not a place for a big group over 3-4 people. It also looks very neat and clean, and gives a calm, quiet type of vibe. Free wifi, just ask the counter for the network and password. If you really like their coffee, they also sell pre-packaged bags of coffee beans. If you're in a rush though, I recommend using cash over credit card. And if you need a receipt, you'll probably have to ask because I haven't received one (but I didn't need one either lol).

I definitely look forward to trying out more items, especially the adobo special!

  6. I tried the Coconut Curry Chicken Sandwich. It was superb. The bread was crispy and fresh. The meat was yummy, tasty, and well soaked with coconut curry flavor. The price of $9 per sandwich was definitely worth it!

  7. I've been on a bit of an avocado toast kick recently. It seems like a really simple dish, and it's not that complicated in terms of ingredients, but execution is everything. Instagram has informed me that short grain's avocado toast game is fire, so when doing some Christmas shopping and in the area I had to stop in. Instagram was indeed correct, their avocado toast is fire, and definitely get the egg on it. Lattes and iced coffee are also good, but I wasn't a fan of their ginger shot.

  8. A little spot with a small menu and big taste. Good coffee – our table had a cortado and an iced – and  two tasty and well portioned brunch dishes. The roast beef was fresh and stacked thickly and the green eggs and spam entree was my personal favorite: two eggs sunny side up, served over (much maligned) Spam and drizzled with a yummy salsa verde. Bread on the side was excellent: crusty and perfect for stacking the eggs and Spam. I saw that some of the bread or pastry options came from the ever popular Balthazar, but can't say for certain that the bread was. It was great nonetheless. We'll be back. Jersey City needs clean, simple, quick, and fairly priced spots like this.
