Shortstop Restaurant is so decidedly average, well, it's about as average as rowboats, t-shirts, ants, C students, a book being better than the movie, serial killers being white and male, this review, and 2.3 children per US household. And that's pretty damn average.
However, Shortstop is also a pretty perfect pit stop between a wonderful day in Van Cortlandt Park and your return trip southbound on the 1 Train. Plus, if you ever pass out underground and find yourself starved and stopped at the End of the Line (yes, 242nd St. is the last stop on the 1), Shortstop is a by-the-book diner, open 24 hours, and will gladly serve as the light at the end of your drunken tunnel.
Anyway, I ordered the Grilled Chicken Sandwich – lettuce, tomato, unremarkable bun, and a thin sliced breast that looked like it came hot off my kitchen skillet. So, yeah, like I said, a grilled chicken sandwich. Hit the spot, but again, still pretty damn average. However, the shoestring french fries (albeit a decidedly average side item in itself) must've been tasty because I feel like I was just shoveling them into my mouth. Not like that's average behavior for me or anything.
Shortstop Restaurant is also one of those joints where you need to ask for the key for the bathroom. Not sure what has gone on in there prior to this policy, nor do I think I want to know. But with the amount of cops that mosey on through this joint, I would hope not much. Then again, I can only imagine the amount of hoodrats that mosey on through this joint come nightfall. Vicious cycle, people.
All in all, Shortstop Restaurant is a very clean, chill place to grab a booth, eat some decent grub, catch up on the news, and blend into the background. Sometimes being average ain't half-bad.
It's been years since I've made it back to Shortspot. But I stumbled on this place when I was reviewing Broadway Joe's (next door). The thing I remember most about Shortstop is that they have THE BEST meatball sandwich I've EVER had. Very cheesey, very saucey, packed with gigantic, tasty, fresh meatballs. I always have the same thing when I return so I'll need to attempt to try something else next time because if their meatball sandwich is any indication of the rest of their menu, I'm in for a treat.
Love that it is open late hours too. This was always my late night stop when visiting Manhattan College.
There are only two reasons to go to Short Stop:
1). You wake up to the sound of the train operator saying the #1 train is about to leave the station to go back downtown AND have a severe cheeseburger and fries deficiency after a long night of fun.
2). You are hungry at 4:00am AND you have no food at home.
