Shun Deck Restaurant

“We ordered the Ocean Party Hot Pot, and Shuangpinai or Double Layer Milk for dessert.”

“We had the cold spicy hand-shredded chicken, fried pork chop (WOW!), stir fried Chinese vegetables (A-choy) and the mayonnaise shrimp with walnuts.”

“The rest of the pot has napa cabbage and bean sprouts all throughout, soaked in broth which tastes really good, but seriously…”

  1. I had too much red meat over the course of the week but wanted to have lunch with my parents, so they suggested Shun Deck. I never heard of it before, even though I've passed by the block a lot.

Once you get inside, the decor looks vaguely similar to Nyonya. There's a ton of tables. And there's a loud woman yelling at you from afar.

Food-wise, I went with the seafood and vegetables over rice. It was in that undefineable grey sauce that Chinese food sometimes comes in, but the portions were big and the seafood was fine. It also came with a vegetable soup to start.

Also tried the home style chicken, which was basically more or less shredded room temperature chicken. I liked it. And half a chicken is apparently a lot.

They don't take credit cards, but they have WiFi.

And for some reason they're open til 3am.

  2. I used to frequent this place whenever I was in the mood for a Chinese breakfast or lunch.
With their cuisine based on Shun Tak, they offered selections that were atypical to most Chinese (Canto) restaurants in the area.
Their shredded chicken so to speak was refreshingly delicious.

Service however was horrible, which ultimately stopped me from coming back.

One lady in particular – the rather "young" one out of the bunch – was exceptionally rude. The second I sat down, she threw two menus on our table and asked us what we wanted to order. Taken back, I asked if we could get a minute because my friend who had never been to the restaurant didn't even get a chance to look at the menu. Little b**** has the gut to tell us "We're going on lunch break soon so you have to order now." Last time I checked, the sign on the door read OPEN, which, in most restaurants mean they're still serving. Apparently this was not the case in Shun Deck (or so the waitress thought). I'm not sure what we did wrong – other than asking for a minute to look at the menu – because she kept glaring at my friend and I throughout the entire course of our meal. Super lovely.

Honestly, if she hates her job so much, she really shouldn't be working there and it's a shame Shun Deck would even hire such a rude and hostile person.

  3. Hot pot is decently tasty but seriously not worth the price ($100 for large seafood). A typical 86 th street establishment that does not have a steady clientele base yet.

Their menu was very limited the first time I visited but seem to have grown since that time. Will give it a few tries maybe but it's definitely not my family's go to place.

  4. Had the huge seafood hot pot, two veggie dishes, a noodle dish and cold chicken dish totally around $205. They were nice and let us take the fish from the hot pot and cook the fish two separate ways. It was a lot better this way. The head went into a creamy fish and tofu soup and the body was used to cook with veggies. waitress said the cook only catered to our wish because it wasn't too busy. However it did make a huge difference in my rating. The beef with yee mein and the fish tofu soup were good. Everything else was very bland. The hot pot had a few clams, prob 2-3 crabs and a handful of shrimp. Everything else was veggie. Nothing special and not worth it.

  5. Been here 3 times already, left with a full belly every time. I think the food here is pretty good. I just don't recommend things with fish. I can't even convince myself to put it in my mouth. That is just my own preference I guess.

The tofu here is delicious.  I normally don't eat tofu but I love it here.
Their tiger pepper is also highly recommended if you enjoy spicy food.
Another favorite of mine is their soy sauce pan fried noodle.
And for dessert, you must not miss out on the milk pudding. Yummy!

What takes a point away from them is their limited items on the menu and that during my last visit, they charged me but forgot about my order completely.

***I can't stress that they need a waiting spot for take out. No space at all!!!

  6. If you must eat here, make sure you order the seafood platter like everyone else. Don't order ANYTHING else on the menu because the stuff we tried just wasn't very good.

  7. We were due for a family dinner and wanted to stay local, so we gave Shun Deck a try.

First off, the service you receive is exactly as you read in the comments–BAD. The waitresses were rude and unapologetic. As soon as we were seated, we were hit with a flurry of menus, arms, elbows, and hands by the waitresses. There was absolutely no apology, excuse me whatsoever.

We shared the Medium Ocean Party Hot Pot (fish, crab, shrimp, lobster) $128 – Warning – although some pieces looked cooked, NOTHING IS FULLY COOKED! As soon as the waitress put the pot down, she walked away without letting us know to cook longer. Remember to let the contents boil for some time before eating. This bowl is huge, but lacks taste. Everything was bland–nothing more than boiled seafood. It was our first time eating this kind of cuisine.

Shredded hand pulled chicken – Cold dish, it was OK, and will not order again if I had the chance to.

Veggies were missing taste. (Blossom lotus, Chinese yam)

There weren't any highlights in this dinner other than trying something new and different. My family and I will not be returning.

Wear clothes you don't mind getting stinky because you will smell like seafood soup by the time you leave.

P.S. We gave them a birthday cake and they decided to throw it in the freezer. This is not an ice cream cake. Once again no apology, and was offered a butter knife to cut the cake.

  8. We had reservations for a large party on a busy weekend. We had reservations booked a week ago and were looking forward for their signature "hot pot" dish that Shun deck is famous for. The "hot pot" dish predominately took up to half of their menu. You would not believe what the waitress told us as we are placing our orders. We were shocked as well. Are we here to dine? or are we here just to fool around?

As we are ready to place our order for their infamous "hot pot" dish, the waitress told us : NOT TO ORDER IT B/C its HOT today. Are you kidding me? Obviously its a hot summer day, but don't you have your AC on for your patrons? We never been to a place to eat and the employees there tells us not to order their infamous dish. Unbelievable. Of course, it would be much better to have this course in the cold winter, however, since we are here, and dont mind the temperature; why cant they just place the order instead debating with us? In any event, we would be the one that will be sweating eating it (with joy) and not the workers. lol. Outrageous. Nonetheless, we were able to get what we wanted to order. We had a medium size for a group of 16 ppl. It was perfect. It came with 3 fresh fish, crabs, lobsters, clams and veggie. We also had the cold dish of shredded chicken. Its a MUST TRY. Its sooo good.

The dishes came out pretty fast on a busy weekend. Everything was good there except for the service when the waitress was taking the orders in the beginning. If that waitress, keep turning down customers who wants to order the "hot pot" dish on a summer day, you might as well tell the owner to close down the restaurant in the summer or change their menu and remove that dish!!
