Another authentic high quality ramen option in Astoria along with Syo Japanese Restaurant. They beat Tamashii and Okidoki. The clam and fish broth Shuya ramen brings a flavorful and unique twist from that of other ramen shops. The staff are super friendly and the chef even came out to greet everyone. Oh and the pork buns just melt in your mouth and the dessert custard is very light and tasty.
It is a very cute place. The furniture is simple but interesting in the store which gives the atmosphere a cozy feeling.
Overall, I am a bit indifferent about the place.I was in between giving this restaurant a 3 or 4 stars. Here is why.
Let's begin with the food.
We had the fried wings, and fried brussels sprouts and fried hot dogs. The sauces were interesting that came with the orders. I did not taste the truffle oil in the fried brussels sprouts.
The wings were very big, and had a good texture to them.
I had the Shuya Ramen which in my opinion, yes very flavorful but in my honest opinion just a tad too salty. After eating it, I literally felt heartburn. Perhaps another ramen dish would be less salty or perhaps it was an off day.
The swiftness of service was lacking, we had a table of 4 girls, with about 2 other groups in the restaurant as well and the one waitress seemed very flustered in the store. It took a few tries to get water. Once without ice and the second time with some ice when we did get water. They also forgot our Yuzu drinks after ordering. And it took almost 10 minutes to get the check, three girls went to the bathroom by the time we got it. The service was lacking but they were very nice overall where you couldnt stay upset at them.
I would come back but it would not be my first choice.
I forgot I even ate at this place. So the rice ball thing really sucked. But who cares
The chicken wings were great.
The shaved ice was a bit disappointing.
The clam ramen was pretty good. It's a very clean broth. Not creamy, not heavy. Clean.
The dry ramen was very good too.
Don't think it's a repeat place for me.
If I wanted good ramen in all of Queens, I'd stick to Hinomaru. Affordable, lots of selections an delicious.
New favorite ramen spot in queens. Loved the appetizers we got- tempura Brussel sprouts, Tebasaki buffalo chicken wings and popcorn dog. Ordered the shuya ramen and exceeded expectations. Very clean and light broth. I'm not a fan of the thin straight noodles that a lot of ramen places use, so it was a nice surprise that these ramen were so chewy and thick.
The design of this place was open, modern and very clean. We came right when it opened but I can imagine there being a long wait during peak hours. Wish they had wine on the menu.. But no alcohol. Will be back!!!
This place was on the list of hot and new restaurants recommended by Yelp. I live in Elmhurst so I had to take the train to Shuya and walk a few blocks. It was a rainy and cold Sunday afternoon – perfect weather for ramen!
Upon entering, I was quite impressed by the decor – the light wood tables, chairs, and the ceramics ornamenting the shelves. Simple, but trendy.
My husband and I each had the pork bun. It's true what they say – it did melt in your mouth so tenderly. But..for some reason, my tongue was not satisfied. Can't really describe what it was exactly, but something was missing. Anyway, we both got the Tantan ramen. I missed the "no soup ramen" description so when the bowls came, my husband and I were confused. We then asked if it was possible to get some broth and our waiter kindly provided us with a bowl. The ramen was good considering Shuya does not use MSG. The ground pork was wonderful and the broth was flavorful. I enjoyed it much more with the broth than without. But honestly…it was nothing to write home about. I would come back if it was not out of the way for me. By the way, I also had one of their teas and it was served in a tea pot and ceramic cup. It was cute and delightful.
First, it's the only ramen joint in Astoria that's owned by someone who is actually Japanese. Second, I would say it's my fav ramen spot in Astoria. It's a small shop but that means they can focus on a quality product. The chef and waitress are both Japanese and that matters to me. The place is cash only and tax is already included, so the price is a tad cheaper. I was actually recommended to try this place from a sushi chef at a restaurant in Brooklyn, thank you for the recommendation.
The food:
Pork Bun- Steamed bun, pork chashu, egg tartar sauce. The pork bun was great, it had a nice fat content and the meat was very tender. The mustard was a great addition to cut some of the richness. Definitely get the bun. yelp.com/user_local_phot…
"Tebasaki" Buffalo Chicken- Fried chicken wing w/ house made spicy sauce. I don't normally think wings and Japanese food but these were awesome! The wings were very tasty, they were super juicy and not greasy, they kinda felt like karaga chicken. The side of spicy paste was a nice addition. Get this as well. yelp.com/user_local_phot…
Shuya's Cocktail Shrimp- Boiled Black Tiger Shrimp, avocado, sweet & sour sauce. I really liked this dish a lot. The shrimp was cooked perfectly, the avocado was nice and creamy and the sauce was great. The sauce was kinda like a spicy mayo but with a different flavor. I think the three appetizer are must orders. yelp.com/user_local_phot…
Shuya Ramen- Chicken & fish & clam soup, pork chashu, flavored egg. I want to point out that I don't normally like fish and chicken broth in my ramen since it is usually more mild in flavor but the one here was very good. The ramen was great with a really flavorful broth. The pork was very nice with a good amount of fat and I really loved the char on the meat, you can really taste the smoke. The noodle was cooked well, I did think the bowl was a tad salty toward the end but I am always usually sensitive to salt. Also, be careful, the bowls come out screaming hot! lol yelp.com/user_local_phot…
"Yuzu" Soda- Japanese citrus soda. I didn't know what to expect ordering this but it was really nice and refreshing. yelp.com/user_local_phot…
Nice addition to a sleepy block on Broadway (although I wouldn't like to see the Chinese take-out, Mexican grocery, threading salon, Italian bakery leave though). Originally I though the place was a Design Studio because of the signage in the back wall. I was told it kind of is- more that one of the owners is a furniture or interior designer. The place is sunny & beautiful. Kinda of has a modern Japanese southwest feel- especially the bathroom! The giant wall shelving unit is apparently handmade, and most likely everything else in the space (including the ceramic bowls holding your slurp able noodles) AND they have books underneath the side counter area!
I wonder if they'll let me come hang at their bar, read, and have a tea on my day off.
Now about the food! Interesting curly and medium-thick noodles! Decent portions and a nice fine touch. I got the yuzu clam ramen with mizuna(a plant slightly like dandelion). I had never had anything like this before. I should have mixed it a little, the drizzle and shavings of yuzu (similar to Meyer lemon, but not), was an unexpected taste! The noodles were perfectly Al dente and my ingeniously designed grippy chopsticks picked up all of it. The only complaint was that my clams were a little well done & tough and not the particular species listed on the menu. (Supposed to be Manilla, think I got a cherry stone sorta).
The couple sitting next to me said that the veggie ramen was extremely satisfying & didn't skimp at all, and the regular pork ramen was flavorful as well.
Service was mostly extremely nice(females)- Very Japanese demeanors, but one guy Asian-American guy looked a bit tired or not the most friendly. There places holds about 20 people, nice bar built in the back too. Most nights I've seen the place pretty full.
I'll be back soon! Their Facebook photos are great too! Best of luck to the owner and his wife.
I grew up eating a lot of ramen (not instant ramen but I had my share of it). Noodles are essential in a lot of my own childhood cuisine, and this could be said to a lot of Asian yelpers on here.
Since the boom of ramen places opening up in the city. The city has become a mecca of experimental ramen, and essentially we don't have to walk far to get a decent bowl of broth and noodles. But not all ramen places are created equal.
This place has great options for vegetarians and meat-eaters a like. We ordered the vegetarian ramen and it has loads of veggie and simplicity broth. Presentation of the ramen was colorful and vibrant. Eggs, ginger, or garlic-chips (essentially fried garlic bits) are $2-$1 add-ins. The app was Brussel sprouts with the drizzle of white truffle oil was a nice touch. I'm most impressed by the service and the attention to detail from the tea set-up to the layout of our utensils. I find that to be a good indicator to what happening in the kitchen too.
Summary: Great vegetarian options. Add-ins are a bit pricy for the ramen but overall, tasty and will visit again.
