Sido Gourmet

“Maybe I am extra enthusiastic about Sido because there is such a dearth of yummy places a vegan/vegetarian can grab something near where I live.”

“Their mediterranean offerings are always tasty- I usually get the platter and the babaganoush and tabouleh are delicious.”

“If you want something quick, easy, delicious, and affordable– come to this joint!”

  1. While walking by one day, I had a mega urge for a slice of pizza. They offer pizza and Mediterranean food I believe. I have no experience with the Mediterranean offerings, but was impressed by the variety of toppings offered with the pizza. I opted for a pepperoni and bacon slice. The guy behind the counter was nice and quick. The slice was reasonably priced at $3.75 and was pretty tasty. I'd get another slice if in the area.

  2. Had lunch here midway through the Holi event going on Saturday. They didn't care that I was covered in colored powder as long as I was paying. Interesting to note that this place serves Middle Eastern food along with pizza.

But since we were gonna go to Mamoun's later, we just got pizza. White slice, Pepperoni, Buffalo Chicken, and a coke. Everything was OK. Nothing super amazing, a bit expensive at near $20, but whatever.

  3. NYC just has the best pizzas in the world.  Well haven't been around the world but I'm just guessing they do.  It's just that if you go anywhere else in the U.S., this decidedly average pizza joint would be considered a "best NY pizza in town" candidate.  There's just something about that thin, chewy crust with a smat of crunchiness at the bottom that you find at seemingly every NY pizza joints, that other cities just can't seem to get right.  Why is that?  Why can't other cities replicate what every hole-in-the-wall in Manhattan seem to take for granted?

By all accounts this place is a dive.  No decorations to speak of, more like a convenience store-meets-lions club than a restaurant, "waddayawant" attitudes behind the counter (but not in a bad way, seriously), and their pizzas are not any better than the hundred other places like it you run past in Manhattan.  But then, I've tried about a dozen of those dives and have never been disappointed.  This place is no exception.  Just good pizza.  Average, maybe by NYC standards, which is why I'm giving it 3 stars (and all the non-food factors), but honestly, can you find a place as good anywhere outside of New York?  If you can I'm there.

Table-for-1 Factor:  Yes, as with the other 100 places like it.

  4. We had this via seamless tonight. Very fast delivery.

Very very authentic and delicious with massive portions. We had the Sido Combination, which is 6 or 7 vegetarian appetizers. This included, 2 Falafels, 2 Stuffed Grape Leaves, 2 big pieces of Feta, perfect hummus and tabouleh – very spicy – nice, Baba Ganoush – really authentic, a few other items too. And they gave us an entire package of Pita bread.

The Mujadera is amazing and better than any other in New York and came with a great small salad. The onions are freshly fried to perfection.

At 50 cents each we got four Falafel on the side, but we should have gotten more, they are so good. Certainly the best and freshest Falafel I have had in New York.

The Spinach Pie, was only alright, as it was more of a small pastry, which was wrapped up. The spinach inside was great but the pastry did not do any thing for me.

We have found our new Mediterranean place.

  5. Gourmet: of high quality and often expensive; connected with food or wine of this type.

According to the definition above, quality and cost aren't mutually exclusive, which is why I don't quite understand why Sido proclaims to be "gourmet." The quality is mediocre at best so while the corresponding cost is a bit high, it nonetheless doesn't meet these two requirements.

I dropped by for lunch yesterday, and ordered the falafel, baba ganoush, and tabouli combination platter. Served with several slices of pita everything was average- at best. The three pieces of falafel were almost flavorless, and the sides did nothing to add to the taste. So for $10.52 with tax, I would have been better off going to XLP Food Cart, and foregoing the sides.

Needless to say, I won't be back.

  6. One of the worst slices of pizza ever. I got the fresh mozzarella slice. The cheese was rubbery and bland and there was barely any sauce on it. I did not enjoy it at all. I won't be back ever.

  7. I am really bummed that Chopita across the street closed.  That said, I enjoy this spot as well for tasty falafel combos and pretty good pizza.  I got the "combo 1" today with Tabouli, Hummus and Falafel and it was plentiful and delicious.  If you're in Midtown East, give 'em a try.
