Well I was lured in by the sign and not having had fresh Simit since I was in Turkey almost 20 years ago, I wanted to squeeze in time to stop by. Unfortunately this is much less a bakery or traditional turkish restaurant than it is an Americanized fast food stop to serve simit pizza, sandwiches, etc…
I got the plain simit which was not warm or particularly fresh at all and I ordered the kofte with fries which were decent. The fries were the least Turkish part of the meal and sadly, the best.
Turkish employees, Turkish patrons, but American food mostly. Not worth it if you're looking for something more than a very slight twist on burgers, sandwiches, pizza.
You know it's good when you see locals coming in to grab a bite.
Walking in you see an array of Turkish desserts and simit sandwiches to select from.
I had the simit with smoked salmon cream cheese and avocado with a cup of Turkish coffee. This was a delicious breakfast! I liked that the simit had toasted sesame seeds and warmed for me. The cream cheese was light and the salmon was fresh. The coffee was made on the spot and strong enough to give you a kick in the pants.
Overall the service was great. The gentleman behind the counter was helpful in our selections and very welcoming to questions that we had.
I would say this is a great spot to pick up to go salads and dips as well before walking over to Bryant Park for a day of leisure.
The borek, the pizza, and everything else here was amazing. The location is phenomenal as well. I want to come back here and try the famous hamburger. Located right in front of the iconic Lord and Taylor, their winter decor was up and it looked magical, the view from the second floor of this restaurant is beautiful. Well worth it. This is a great restaurant to sit down and do your work in. I recommend it to everyone!
I passed by this place the other day, Simit Sarayi , and Yelp it, and it said Turkish Bakery. I looked it up the name and found that Simit is a is a circular bread, typically encrusted with sesame or poppy seeds and Sarayi is 'The Palace'. So I went back to the Bread Palace to check it out.
Walking in I could see an L shape display case and counter that had Simit rings, and lots of Borek, which is a type of savory pastry more than a bread. Most of the Borek had fillings like cheese, spinach, or sausage. Others where used in sandwiches like turkey, tuna, as were also the Simit rings. They also serve omelets, burgers, fries, and flat bread pizzas.
I like sesame seeds so much that sometimes I get Italian bread with sesame seeds and use two tops to make sandwiches, So I went for the Simit with Salami, Tomato and Feta Cheese to go, they offered to warm it, but I wanted to do that back at the office.
I was disappointed right off the bat when they threw the Simit sandwich into a bag with no wrapping, paper plat, napkins or utensils. So the store saved 5, 10 cents on my $5 sandwich?
If I hold the bag upright we know all of the tomatoes and stuff will just fall out to the bottom so I held my bag sideways in the palm of my hand until I got to the office.
I heated and cut the Simit in to bite size pieces and ate some and gave some out in order to get other opinions, I and everyone else agree that it was good but nothing special. It's a plain salami and cheese with no sauces , mayo etc. Not bad but not something I would walk several blocks for. Maybe I'll go back when I'm in the mood for sesame seeds, but maybe. And because of the service I give them 3 stars
Stick to the Turkish bagel, and you can't go wrong. So tasty. Convenient if you're staying nearby and it's just too cold to wander far for breakfast.
Let me tell you. This is probably the best cafe-coffee-tea-deli spot in all of Manhattan. First of all, it is super, super cozy. Second of all, it has plenty of room, and finally, there are phone charging stations. Yaaaay! Also, the rest rooms are clean and secretly stowed away on the second floor in the back. The only reason, and I mean the only reason that they haven't been given five stars, is because their food and service was kind of shabby that night. Hmph, I will be back to follow-up!
Always enjoy a good pretzel bun when out eating, so was interested in this spot dedicated to simit concoctions (very similar to pretzel bread). Relatively big place with seating upstairs and LOTS of different options to choose from.
Everyday special: free coffee with any sandwich purchase, sold. Got a salami/cheese simit sandwich, and a nutella filled cookie (total $6ish). They warm up the sandwich for you, so the melted cheese and the salami worked really well together on the light but crispy simit. Not too filling, and tastes great together. Hazelnut cookie oozes out nutella in the middle – can't go wrong there. The coffee is your standard fare – kept me awake for most of the day so it did its job.
Really liked the fast service here and spacious interior. Absolutely want to try the pizza next and more cookies.
A taste of Turkey in the middle of NYC! I The chain is actually from Turkey so you know their stuff is authentic! I've had simits in Istanbul before and it's great to have this place right near my office so I can get a taste of the deliciousness and relive memories of traveling in Turkey!
Make sure to try;
– Simit (make sure you get it warm it tastes so much better)
– Cheese pastries
– Turkish Tea
– Turkish Coffee (note there will be coffee grounds on the bottom)
– Get some fresh squeezed orange juice
There is seating on the second floor if the first floor is full up!
All in check this place out whether it be for breakfast, for a snack or for coffee with a friend!
