Singlecut is another one of metropolitan area's top flight breweries. I liked the atmosphere here very much. They have board games as well as a stage for performers. You can see the brewing facilities from the tap room, and the brewery has an open store front which allows fresh air to swoop in.
The bar is small, yet the manage to offer over a dozen drafts on tap. There seemed to be a focus on bitter and sour beers. I enjoyed the gose and pale ale which I tried. All of their beers had full bodies; they also had robust flavors which was likely a result of the beers being so fresh.
Singlecut also has a kitchen for those who are interested in grabbing a bite with their beer.
Had the mixed "pickle" app. As in pickled things like okra and beets. Fun place to hide out for a spell. Of course, there is beer. And they do tours. A group of young, single, skinny joggers showed up while we tried brew samples and ate the pickled things and I was all like, this is cool.
It took me over two years of living in Astoria to stop in here, but I would urge anyone to avoid this mistake! Compared to many breweries, SingleCut does have a spacious tasting room – plenty of tall tables (some bigger, some smaller). The decor is also very cool – guitars on the wall, headstocks as the beer taps, barrels all around you. Before this particular trip, I stopped in a couple times before quickly for a few bottles of the Half-Stack (IPA) and Mo' Shuggie (another IPA) which are smooth, easy drinking IPAs. This time we had a few to taste and I cannot wait to go back and have more (maybe to try out the kitchen too).
Beer reviews:
Half-Stack and Mo' Shuggie: only have had in bottles – hops are not overpowering; easy drinking IPAs
Mad Eric: sour milk stout – my favorite SingleCut beer so far. I'm not usually a stout guy, but the sourness tones down the stout taste and makes it much more drinkable.
Full-Stack: double/imperial IPA – a bit hoppier than the Half-Stack, but still very drinkable
Mad Michael: sour, but a bit on the bubbly side, lighter tasting than the Mad Eric
Brett Jan: wheat ale, very smooth and drinkable
All-in-all I would recommend this brewery to anyone. One of the best sets of beers I think I've ever had.
From the moment I left SingleCut, I have been dying to go back. Aside from the pungent smell upon entering, my experience was nothing but positive. I loved the guitar motif, candles, barrels, spacious interior, and ample seating. My favorite beer was the Mad Eric, a sour milk stout, unlike anything I've tasted before. SingleCut is in a league of their own and I can't wait to try the rest of their menu.
This place is amazing, I first came here a few months back and what makes this place unique is that it's a brewery not just a bar, almost everything on tap is brewed in house so it's really really fresh, one thing to note is besides the signature beers the menu does constantly change which is not a bad thing but coming back a few months later I did wish that I could've had the beer that I loved so much last time but it's fine because they always have great selections, They also have growlers, 32 & 64 oz which they will pour for you on the spot and for much cheaper than you can buy a quality beer of that size anywhere, the food menu does change as well but like I said before good options, this place is really spacious and has plenty of seating I've only ever been here on Sunday afternoons so I don't know how busy they get but on a Sunday it's perfect, a nice touch that I really like is that there are board games, etc that you can play here, everything from scrabble, chess, checkers, connect 4, uno, jenga, etc it's a relaxed vibe here that everyone will love
Beer. Check. Food. Check. Hardwood. Check. Hop Smell. Check.
Singlecut checks off all of the major expectations that I have when visiting a brewery. A nice, relatively open space and a small bar that serves a surprising amount of different varieties of beers (plus a 'guest tap' cider). Many of the beers here were of the hoppier variety, that I am not huge on. Many of the beers were pale ales of some variety, which I typically don't like. However, they had a sour stout that was one of the more unique beers that I've had, and very much enjoyed.
I also got a sandwich. It was a brat on a bun with chips (actual chips, not french fries. This is America). It was okay.
Cool place in the middle of freaking nowhere. Sadly, they don't have the $10 flights of 5 beers anymore, but at least still have interesting 5oz tastes for just $2-3, so you can savor several options.
I wasn't particularly in love with any of their drafts (I tasted the FuzzBox, which I hated, the Billy 18Watt, the Billy Half Stack and the BonBon), but the vibe is nonetheless chill… they even have a couple of projectors showing movies (Jurassic Park) or ball games.
Top level beer game right here. Fantastic beer selection? Check. Delicious and cheap snacks? Check. Fast service? Check. Good board game collection? Check. "You pick it" Record selection? Check. SingleCut is without a doubt, my favorite brewery/taproom in NYC.
They let you buy 5 oz tasters, but I think had restricted it to 2 per person to keep the line moving on a busy Saturday. It was pretty crowded but a table opened up right away. Had decent pretzels, fantastic pickles and chips to go along with our favorite beers. Most NYC breweries do not give you such consistent quality across the spectrum of beer types but SingleCut does them all really well and a few stood out as one-of-a-kind beers:
Jan Olympic White Lager: really special lighter beer with citrus elements that give it an orange tang without compromising the light body.
Jan Brett Fermented White Ale: My favorite of the favorites, you have to taste it to believe how different and delicious something like this could be.
Mad Michael Sour Lager: really interesting for a sour beer, you can taste the wild ferment qualities right away
Half Stack IPA: hops just punch you in the nose before you even taste this hoppy wonder of a beer.
