  1. Solid Russian Restaurant

I've been here a few times for lunch / early dinner. They have a full menu and a separate lunch menu with smaller portions but lower prices.

I tried a few appetizers and main dishes. My favorites were the Russian Potato Salad (Salad Olivie), Russian dumplings (Pelmenie), hot and cold Borscht soup, and
    Katleti (Turkey and Pork Patties).

Bottom line, the food is tasty and prices are good.

  2. A nice change from all the trendy Russian restaurants in Brooklyn that don't really serve Russian "comfort food" anymore.

My friends and I stopped by for dinner and shared a bunch of things:

    Georgian-Style cheese pie (hachapuri)-bread + cheese = amazing, can't go wrong
    Salad Olivier
Pelmeni Siberian (traditional russian dumplings)-plump and juicy
Pirogies-this were a bit too bready and greasy
    Greek Salad
    Beef Stroganoff-sooo creamy, soooo good
Couple kebabs-none of us liked the seasoning on these
    Fried potatoes with mushrooms

There's a small dance floor and by the end of the night, there was a DJ/singer.

Overall great option to try out some traditional Russian food.

  3. Good find near Coney Island!! We were looking for a place to go nearby the coney island area and we found that one, which is actually closer to Brighton Beach. We wanted russian cuisine and were amazed by this place. It was exactly what we wanted, nice dumplings, good borsch, beef strogonoff, potato soup+meat with a huge crispy dough thing on top, good  and huge russian beer bottles, russian telenovelas on TV, crooner singing at the back and real russian people all around us. Service was careful and on time, and the place looks renovated from what we have figured. It was a trip out of New York and it was a success, we travelled by going to this place. I see myself going again while in the area. Try it.

  4. I very much enjoyed my dinner on a cold, rainy, January night.  I don't have much experience with Russian cuisine, but I was impressed with a lot of the food.  I tried the perogies, which were not what I expected.  Puffed pastry around the meat, or potato interior.  Every other time that I've had perogies they a more doughy exterior.  They were excellent, they reminded me of the puffed pastry that you get with hors d'oeuvres.

While I didn't try it myself, I thought it was interesting that you can get hot tea with cherry jam to put into your tea.  It looked interesting, and if I am ever back, I would try it.

For my meal I had the stuffed cabbage and the lamb stew.  The stuffed cabbage was amazing, absolutely the best thing that I ate there.  The sauce is really what did it for me, sort of an orange sauce that has a lot of flavor (I want this sauce on everything I eat).  My only criticism about the stuffed cabbage was that I could have used a bit more cabbage, there was only a couple of leaves and the rest was meat, it could have used a bit more balance.

The lamb stew was also very good.  Thick stew that is almost solid, big chunks of lamb that fall apart at the touch of a spoon and potatoes.  A large puffed pastry covered the bowl.  While the stew was good, I thought it could use a little more seasoning (nit picking here).

Delicious food, the type of place that makes me want to try more Russian cuisine.

  5. Came here on a very cold Saturday w/ my friends who are novices at Russian Cuisine. We didn't have a reservation so we had to wait around 5 minutes for a table during peak time which is not bad at all. Service was a little subdued but I think it was because of the language barrier. I ordered the Beef Stroganoff which is always my standby dish when I go to an East European place that has it on the menu with the kasha (buckwheat). It was really delicious and the servings were huge. My bf and I shared the cold herring and potatoes appetizer and other people at the table ordered potato varenikis and cheese blintzes for their apps.

Overall, I really enjoyed the experience but 1 star off because we didn't get offered the vodka shots that other Russian places offer you at either the start or the end of your meal.

  6. Food is amazing. Amazing. From two Ukrainian girls who have decided to explore Brighton Beach we could not ask for better food experience to take us back home. The lunch is huge for price they ask. You start with different Russian/Ukrainian salads. The portion is really generous. We have ordered olivie and it was not disappointment. After borsch was ordered which was really filling. And for the third course we have tried pelmeni and kotleti. Another great choice and really authentic as it is served with sour cream and bread.

  7. Are servers traditionally this rude in Russia/Ukraine? Because, here in the good ol' US of A, they work for a graded payment system we call "tips". After being ignored by multiple employees at the front of the restaurant, the young man who walked us to the table placed the menus on a table and BUMPED into us as he rudely walked back to the front. I kid you not. No apologies, no acknowledgement of any sorts.

The service did not improve from there. And as you, my fine Yelping friends, may know, service can make or break the quality of any food. I shouldn't even have to say that the borsht was mediocre, and that the appetizer shared was an overpriced cheese quesadilla. Good thing we didn't order more.

What's worse is that both I and my dining companion are Russian-born, and we spoke our native tongue at Skovorodka.  What their deal was with the embarrassingly bad service is beyond me!

  8. mother russia, the land of vodka and heavy foods. although i found this place on yelp, it felt particularly safer to go in company of a russian. moment we walked in, we were approached in english but then switched to russian and i was a little lost. first thing i noticed were their tv programming. some sort of russian pop music awards. man… russians love bright colors and crazy hair perms.

onto the food. i didn't order anything.  i let my dining companion handle all of that. i tried some sort of purple drink which i didn't like. then we had a soup and a bunch of dumplings. i was pretty satisfied with my meal although i don't remember what it was and for sure i can't pronounce it.

i would go back, for sure.
