  1. Typical NYC deli.  Not the cleanest place and it has subpar food.

  2. One of my girlfriends took my here on a visit to NY.  She casually says "oh yeah they have like a buffet and stuff it's pretty good"

I had no idea what I was IN FOR!  When I walked in I swear I heard angels singing from the clouds.  This place is a mecca of delorious selection.  I grabbed a decent selection of food off of the buffet…I was able to find plenty of light stuff since I had to go back to work and couldn't endure a food coma….though I wish I could have.  There was an amazing candy and drink selection too.  I will definitely be seeking out a smiler's again next time I'm in NY.

  3. I'd never noticed this place before, but we ate a late afternoon dinner there today and we were very pleased.  The hot food bar & salad bar had a great selection compared to most places, and everything was really tasty & appealing-looking.  They also had some very tempting-looking sandwiches & paninis and several wonderful-sounding varieties of muffins, but we were already overloaded from the other stuff.

Since we had to kill a lot of time, we ate upstairs – and although the tables & chairs were the usual "well-worn", it was large and clean (in fact, a nice young guy was cleaning very industriously while we were there).  The guy behind the deli counter and the guy at the cash register were both pleasant.

Smiler's has an "A" rating from the Health Department.

(Update on 1/21/16):  I've been back there several times over the years and everything is still fine.

  4. What a joke,
Came here before work for smoothie and the juice lady is taking her sweet time talking to people and almost seem high since she was extremely slow and not efficient.
It took her close to 10minute to make my juice in rush hour! Are you kidding? This is NYC, if you cant do things fast, how do you even run business??
Will not set a foot to this place again.

  5. What an awesome find on the way pick up the Express bus last night.  Just looking for a little deli or somewhere to stop into to grab a sandwich for the ride home, and this place fit the bill.

First off, the "salad" bar is amazing looking!!! $7.99/lb. for all kinds of stuff, including chinese food, tons of different prepared veggies, fruits, anything you can name….and it all looked outstanding.

Sandwich counter is what really drew my attention though…lots of paninis and sandwiches to choose from. I went with the House Combo Panini which was a few different kinds of meat cheese and big crunchy green leaf lettuce all some perfectly grilled panini bread.  Man did it hit the spot.  It's a really good sandwich, and not to expensive either…my buddy paid so I don't remember the exact price, less than $10 though for sure.

Also, they have a whole wall of drinks to choose from, so this makes for a great place to stop in any time your out and need a drink, quick snack, or complete take out meal.

  6. I Had a Chicken parm panini and it wasn't so bad but not amazing either.  Panini was a bit cold and messy.  They have a huge menu so it was hard for me to decide what to get. They have plenty to pick from.  If you are in the area just stop by and check it out. You have plenty of seats upstairs to take a break from shopping or sightseeing. Prices….well, they are NYC prices. So on that note, enjoy.

  7. We took a while deciding from the extensive menu what kind of sandwich to get made, only to be told it was after lunch (not by long) and they were no longer making any. The pre-made options were okay, but suspiciously pricier than the other options may have been. They were okay, not amazing but not bad.

Place was empty and pretty tired and tacky, but you get the feeling locals just grab-and-go from here and don't stick around.

  8. After walking around all the usual lunch spots, we decided to try something different and this one seemed to fit the bill.  We walked in and the food in the buffet looked pretty decent, plus there was a seating area upstairs which is what made us stay as we were tired and hungry and really didn't want to walk back to eat in the office.

The selection of food and decent, they have California rolls, lots of different fruits, cold pasta, and a decent selection of hot food also.  Unfortunately all the food was bland, tough, some dishes were cold and had no flavor.  The seating area upstairs was completely covered with smog from the kitchen below and was HOT.  Lucky us we found a table by the window so that was somewhat bearable.   I can only imagine how it must feel on a hot summer day.  Needless to say I will not be returning.
