Thailand's ice cream rolls are taking over New York City by storm. The latest location is in Forest Hills.
There were surprisingly quite a few customers in Snow Story tonight when I dropped by which is shocking considering it's usually depressingly empty. It must've been the 90+ degrees weather. I didn't like the fact that they don't call out your name when they begin making your ice cream (unlike at 10Below) therefore leaving me to have to guess which is mine by process of elimination. Needless to say I missed my little ice cream rolling show AND somehow I got the wrong ice cream which wasn't noticed until all the toppings were already on. This happened because I ordered lychee with strawberries and someone else had vanilla ice cream with strawberries (you know, both have white ice cream with red strawberry bits in it) – so the worker guy assumed it was mine. Wrong. The guy timidly uttered "sorry, I f*cked up" to whom appeared to be his boss. The boss was quiet and gave him the side-eye. Awkward! Made me feel kind of bad… Hey, they should've just given me the incorrect order ice cream for free since it was going to be wasted anyway right? C'mon! In any case, the lychee ice cream flavor was fun and different. Very refreshing and went well with blueberry toppings! I can't wait for their Thai iced tea flavor which apparently they are working on. It costs $7 (tax included) for a cup of rolled ice cream with unlimited toppings – typical New York price sadly. My biggest issue was the wait. It takes quite a couple of minutes which isn't bad but if there are other people in front of you then a couple of minutes become a few minutes and the next thing you know it's like 15 minutes later. I live in NYC, I'm always in a rush even if it is to go nowhere! I don't care so much for the novelty of rolled ice cream but my husband has never had it which is why we decided to check it out and support the local business.
I don't find Snow Story to be very cozy with its eerily bright white walls and fluorescent lighting. It seriously needs a major makeover. It looks as if they had their grand opening abruptly (probably to compete with their neighbor Snow Days), but even after all these weeks little has been done to improve the look aside from the amateur painting of a bear at the wall of the entrance. Hm… I wonder do they just lack skills in decoration or are they thinking they are just going shut down soon anyway?
Having previously tried Thai ice cream rolls at ten below and other Thai ice cream roll places, I was surprised to find that their ice cream wasn't as sweet as some of the other places I've tried. While the decor or the lack thereof doesn't make the place pleasing on the eye, I personally was there to get dessert on the go. There are seats if you want to stay and eat. I ordered mango ice cream with pineapple chunks (don't remember the name of it) and topped it with fresh fruits, mochi, Oreos and condensed milk. $7 for ice cream and unlimited toppings is a pretty good deal. There is a $10 minimum for card though. I went on a weekday during lunchtime and there wasn't a line. My friend and I happily got our ice cream and we will definitely be back again.
The frozen dessert scene in Forest Hills is definitely heating up – and this new addition is an interesting variation on the traditional ice cream sundae. Getting a treat here is definitely an experience – the rolled ice cream process takes about 5 minutes – and it's a lot of fun to watch.
Like Cold Stone, ice cream and toppings are mashed together into a nice creamy mix. But here that's just the start. The mixture is then placed onto a chilled work surface and spread very thin. Then, it's scraped up into rolls. An unlimited number of toppings (from a good sized selection) are included and added at the end.
However, it will be interesting to see how long this place will survive, especially given the competition and the notoriously high rents on Austin Street. (There's also a similar rolled ice cream place opening up a few stores down). There are some logistical and presentation issues that make me worry. (I get the sense it's designed to only last for the summer season).
For starters, the place looks amateurish. It looks like a pop-up store that was setup in an hour. There's an igloo painting on the wall – and that's about it for decor. There's three seats up front – but a lot of empty space otherwise.
The process is also labor intensive – and slow (although that's part of the fun). On the night we went the wait wasn't so bad – but I imagine the lines could get really long give how long these things take to make. They have two stations available – and another person running the register – but that might not be enough.
The staff are a little short on professionalism (one was watching Olympic basketball on his smart phone) but, at least on the night I was there, very friendly. They even spelled out my daughter's name in syrup while making her dessert. They seemed to be having fun.
On the plus side – the Ice Cream itself is really good. We got the chocolate and bananas – and it was creamy and delicious. No complaints there. Especially loaded up with toppings.
Overall, I had a great time, and may even go back – but this place seems better suited for a location with more tourists. Given the prices and the time it takes it's more of a one-time special event type of place than a place I'd visit of a regular basis.
I ordered the vanilla strawberry flavor with a bunch of toppings. I got blueberries, Oreos, strawberry waffle, whipped cream and trix. I have to say it was yummy. The trix definitely gave it a crunch and a big twist to ice cream. You would never think that it would be a good combination but it was delish!
I was excited to have another ice cream place pop up in the neighborhood but this one definitely disappoints. The decor of the place doesn't look warm and inviting. It reminds me of a hospital. I actually gave them a benefit of doubt and tried it twice. Both times were disappointing. The second time I threw away half of it. The ice cream itself is not smooth and creamy. It had a tacky sticky like texture. Their toppings were disappointing. The graham bears were stale. There's another one opening up to shake shack and I hope they do it better.
A lot about this place is just wrong. From the decor, to the staff, to the non hygienic placement of their food toppings.
Let's start with the decor. It's depressing in here. The walls are white aside from a painted bear and the name of the store. The white florescent lighting that accompanies it makes the place look eerie – sort of like walking into an empty hospital. It's just not welcoming and I would've walked out without ordering if it wasn't for my bf really wanting thai ice cream rolls (damn you b!).
HYGIENE and CLEANLINESS. This also plays a huge part in terms of decor. The counter is way too low and from a customers POV – you can see everything going on behind the register. That includes the register, the toppings left out in the open (that a rowdy customer could easily touch if they decided to just extend their arms inwards a little), and all the mess that basically should be hidden behind some kind of wall or barrier. I honestly think this place needs a clear barrier between the food and the people. I saw a mosquito hovering over the toppings today while ordering and the girl working didn't even bother to flick it away.
The staff. I'm specifically complaining about the Caucasian brunette working today, Saturday 8/6/16 around 5:15-520PM. The nice asian guy making our ice creams was very friendly. She half ass acknowledged my presence til I asked her how the flavors and all worked here. She spent all her time talking to her blonde loud obnoxious friend sitting by the counter on the customer side. Not cool. I'm not in anyway expecting top notch service at a privately owned ice cream shop but this little girl needs some training. It isn't amusing to hear her talk so loud that it's almost like screaming to her friend about guys getting mad at her over snapchat Stories and what not. My advice to her – Keep all that baby girl talk to a minimum when you're working a shift and there's customers inside. Be a little less obnoxious because you're getting paid to work not to chat up your friend til your shift ends. The fire inside of me wanted to curse her out but thankfully, my boyfriend with a personality much nicer and a heart much more pure than mine was there to hold my arm and tell me to calm down when he saw me about to pounce on the girl that isn't EVEN CUTE for boys to fight over her.
