I've been to Monday night trivia here a couple times and my experience has been good. The ambiance is intimate and relaxed and the vibes are great.
My first time here I tried the lobster mac & cheese, as recommended by the waiter when I asked him what was good – it was tasty, but very oily, which wasn't surprising, but I'm just not sure it was quite tasty enough to be worth the calories. I know, I know – lame! But that's how I felt. I also got a side of Brussels sprouts, which was good! And my friends liked their mac & cheese burgers.
The second time around I had their slow-roasted chicken over Brussels sprouts – that was stellar and I heartily recommend it.
I don't drink but I hear the beer is great. Also they have free books in the bathroom. All in all it's very cute and everyone's real nice. And there are skis on the wall. Can't go wrong with that.
I wasn't too pleased with the food. The price surely isn't worth it either. I took a photo of the burger. But don't get it wrong it was okay just didn't leave me with a satisfied feeling.
The item I paid was the Pretzel Byrgyr at $13.00 which consists of a 6 oz. beef patty, beer soaked kraut, German mustard and Brie served on pretzel bun. Served with fries. The idea that it was on a Pretzel just made my mind very happy and my tummy excited. But this sandwich was lacking the Pretzel taste and hardly any mustard was placed on it. I was expecting a little more from them.
I might try another burger from them but not anytime soon. The staff was very friendly.
Never fails to disappoint. We took our employees out for a last lunch. We were greeted by Jonas, the bartender/waiter. He was AWESOME. Spent time hanging out with us and made some good suggestions.
The rarebit was delicious, as were the chick pea fries. Only suggestion would be to have a few more options for apps. My burger was cooked perfectly. My wife's veggie shepherds pie was delicious.
The beer selection is great. Not your typical run of the mill lineup.
Cool artwork on the wall as well. Looking forward to another trip when we're in the area.
We stopped by the other night for a quick bite before the movies. We started off with a few beers. They have a decent offering which is nice but the food was a bit disappointing.
My wife was craving S'MAC so I brought her here for the next best thing: Mac & Cheese Burger. The reviews said it was good so we had high expectations. I was up in the air between the Avocado Burger and the British Burger but with the waitress' help, I went with the latter.
The M&C burger, according to the wife, was extremely bland. Before she delved into it, she commented about the lack of dressing on the burger. After biting into it, she said it had no seasoning whatsoever. We asked for hot sauce and they brought us two near-empty bottles of the regular Tobasco sauce and the green Tobasco sauce. When I saw "near-empty," I literally mean a few drops at most. The British Burger was nothing to write home about. It had onions. It had bacon. But it was also on the bland side, even with dressing on it and I'm one person who does not like his food salty either.
I've been wanting to come back here since my first attempt to eat here when they first opened (their kitchen wasn't ready so we didn't stay). I must say it was a bit disappointing, at least for what we chose. I think this might be more of a snack and pub eats kinda spot as opposed to a dinner spot. Maybe I'll come back one day…maybe.
Meh. I asked for my burger to be cooked to medium- what I got was practically mooing. The fries were soggy and my potato leek soup had a curdled consistency. Save your money and go somewhere else for your burger fix because the price point is pretty high.
I really wanted to like this spot because of their interesting menu. Mediocre at best.
This is one of those overtly hipster places that have become too common in Brooklyn and Astoria. Skis and snowshoes on the wall, lots of wood paneling, showing old cartoons on the TVs. Granted, none of these things are bad, they just set up a slightly manufactured type of ambiance.
What makes this review a 3-star is the unimpressive food menu. On its surface it claims to be Welsh, but really it's your standard pub grub with a couple of extras. Mac & cheese and kimchi burgers…something tells me those aren't Welsh, no matter how interesting they sound. Something about the food also seemed a little overpriced, even though really I think they're standard New York prices (beer was around $8-9, entrees clocked in at around $15 and sides at $6-10). Their happy hour is pretty good – $4 drafts and CHEAP apps (we're talking like $2.50 and $3) until 7pm. But alas, I got there after 7, so I couldn't even partake.
Beer selection is respectable – 10 taps with true crafts on them. And the bartenders are all super friendly! Happy to chat with you and even share a set of free shots if you're looking a little worn out from the week. But sadly, that's not enough for me any more, in a city with more A+ bars than I can manage.
3.5
Delicious British/Welsh food. I got the big spread of English breakfast which was bangers and mash and beans. I also tried some Welsh pancakes which was amazing. I'm not sure what's it made out of or what goodness was in it but yummy!
Service was good, and coffee was strong.
However, it IS on the pricey side.
I usually don't go to Gastropubs often but this one was a good bet. If you're coming by car and at night, you can easily miss this place, very low key signage in a more residential part of Astoria. The place was almost packed to capacity, usual for most spots on a Friday night but we were able to get a table by the window which wasn't bad.
Megan was our server for the night, and she did a good job getting our orders, explaining specific items on the food and drink menus. I had the Pretzel Burger cooked medium well, while my companion had a smoked chicken sandwich. Both came with fries and slaw. The slaw was excellent in its own right, sweet with a decent amount of seasoning and the fries were very crispy on the outside and warm and mushy on the inside, almost like eating a baked potato.
The cheese on the burger was oozing out along with the sauerkraut which wasn't necessarily a bad thing although I had plenty of napkins on standby. My companion enjoyed her sandwich as well with only a slight issue of the bacon not being on it which was fixed after getting in touch with the server.
They have a decent selection of beers on hand, I got Coney Island hard root beer, while she ordered a PBR.
Do be prepared to spend money, unless you come during happy hour and if you have cc you'll be greeted with a iPad as the virtual register/reader
I'll definitely include Snowdonia on my list of places to frequent this summer
