Every time I'm eating soba, I start to think about home-cooked food. While Soba Totto probably didn't have the best noodle in town, it definitely has one of the most extensive list of dishes. Worked a bit late today, I decided to eat a bit light and go with the cold dipping soba. Out of the still extensive list, I opted for the one with mushroom and radish – perfect for a hot summer evening. Strongly recommend to add the poached egg and stir it well with the soba noodle, it added an extra creamy flavor while still preserved the refreshing texture. Towards the end, the waiter was also kind enough to bring me a cup of hot tea.
This is a good place for some simple food. Really would like to try their lunch special set, including a small sashimi don and hot/cold soba.
My friend and I wandered into Soba Totto after being quoted a 20 minute wait at Sakagura and learning that they no longer had the lunch special that we wanted. Shockingly, Soba Totto is A LOT larger than I thought – truly embodies the statement, "looks are deceiving". Despite being packed, we were told it was a 10 minute wait, so we waited.
I had the salmon roe, uni, and crab meat Don lunch special, which comes with a bowl of hot or cold soba noodles and some edamame. I opted for the cold. My friend had the chopped tuna and salmon roe don lunch special with a side of cold soba noodles. Both dons were really good and fresh. The portions of portion were generous too. A salad was served as an appetizer – different from your usual Japanese salads as this came with crunchy fried onions, which I loved. It reminded me of those small bags fried ramen "chips" that I loved buying as a kid from the supermarket.
A bit pricy for a lunch special at $25 post tax and tip when comparing to other places, but if you don't want to wait at Sakagura, Soba Totto isn't a bad alternative.
I'm totally calling it, this is your new date spot.
Cheated a little and scoped the place a week prior with friends, two former Japanese residents. Skewers and tempura act as the perfect icebreaker, get your hands on the not-so-common Japanese fix-ins like Tsukune (chicken meatball) and the corn tempura. Be adventurous and split the Agedashi Tofu. (Say that ten times fast!)
I officially popped my cold soba cherry here as well, learned the "dip and sip" method the hard way. Helpful tip: their dinner offers a wider selection (namely the savory duck confit), but either way, the quality is always superb.

We ordered the Kani no Kamaboko, Kamo Nanban, Sukiyaki Soba, Okame Soba, and the Assorted Dessert Plate. Honestly, everything was pretty great! If you ready my reviews, you'll know that the dessert plate was definitely my favorite though everything was pretty great. In fact, the soba was probably the most disappointing thing and it was pretty good.
Pro Tip: Order the regular size. The large is absolutely massive.

I've heard that they have $10 limited chirashi bowl for lunch special so I tried my best to make it in time, but failed miserably. Compared to other choices on the menu, their lunch special is quite reasonable. They offer daily special for $15 which comes with salad and hot/cold soba bowl. I got pork donburi kinda dish and it was sooooo gooood!( a bit salty but sooo goood) Hot soba was a little disappointing bc it's literally just soba noodle and hot soup. I get that it's complementary item, but it would've been nice if they put some scallions or wasabi in it to make it a little more flavorful. If you are in the area during lunch hour, check it out.
I give Soba Totto 3.5 stars. I wanted to like it more but nothing was incredible, but everything was pleasant. My fiancé and I recently dined at Yakitori Totto in Midtown West which I thought wa better. :).
We made a reservation for 6 and a baby on Friday and even though our party was about 30 minutes late; we were not rushed to be seated. There's a lot more room in the back of the restaurant. Our server brought up food fast enough but when things were picking up they were slow with the later half of our meal, and dessert (the best part).
Anyway, we had a bunch of small plates – agedashi tofu (always good), shishito pepper Yakitori (heard it was spicy), grilled pork belly (good not too fatty), shrimp and veggie tempura (always good, had unique veggies like fiddlehead- big shrimp), fried chicken wing (probably
the best thing they had), bacon asparagus (delicious), bacon Mochi (meh, weird texture), pork belly salad. And then of course the soba.
For soba, we shared the hot soba which was with pork, hot broth. It was ok. We also had the cold soba with uni. Didn't get to eat much of the uni-the soba was masked with this foam thingI see comes with old soba. The hot was in a soy broth with pork belly. Soba here seemed relatively similar elsewhere too. Except cocoon that place is amazing.
Probably the best part of the night was dessert. We had the trio: vanilla, green tea and red bean Ice cream. All delicious and made in house. The trio has the Annin tofu – silky soft tofu like pudding with blueberries, a well done soft chocolate cake and a light cheesecake. The chocolate has good texture. They forgot to enter a candle for my dad but fixed it quickly.
Overall service was prompt. Attentive. A bit dop towards the end but we shooed them along. Not sure i would return. It was good but not superstar.
Overdue review of Soba Totto's bara chirashi!
I've been twice for their bara chirashi ($10). The bara chirashi comes with a small salad, edamame, chirashi bowl, and hot or cold soba noodles.
The chirashi bowl comes with salmon, tuna, mackerel, uni, roe, shrimp, and eel on a bed of sushi rice and topped with green sprouts. (I'd ask for the green sprouts on the side to be honest.)
The fish was fresh and the sushi rice was good. It tasted like they were more generous with the mackerel than any other fish, but then again mackerel does have a strong taste. I much preferred the cold soba noodles because the flavors are more intense when you dip and slurp up the noodles compared to hot soba in soup. After you're done with your cold soba noodles they will offer you a small pot of hot water to pour into the rest of the dipping sauce to make a nice after meal soup.
If you go during the week Monday-Thursday you can get away with getting in line at 11:30AM but on Fridays it's best to get in line between 11AM and 11:15AM. There are only 20 bara chirashi sets a day and they open at 11:45AM! There was construction during the time I went so that provided shade, other than that bring an umbrella, hat, etc if construction is done and it's a hot summer day. Just wait by the door and once it's after 11:45AM someone will come out from the restaurant to unlock the door and start leading people in to be seated. If you sit in the bar area closer to the kitchen you will be served faster.
The bathroom was clean. The layout of the restaurant had nooks and crannies and open spaces to accommodate singles, couples, and larger groups. Service was prompt and professional.
I've only been here for the $10 bara chirashi lunch set, so my review is only based on this! I've been hesitant to write about their amazing $10 bara chirashi lunch set because I don't want too many people finding out about it…but I thought I needed to share the wealth! Below are my tips to make sure you are one of the lucky 20 people who get the daily $10 bara chirashi lunch set:
1. Stand in line by 11:15am and you will be guaranteed to be one of the first 20 people. My coworker and I once came at 11:30am, and we were #17 and #18 in line. I don't want to risk that again, so I say 11:15am to be sure!
2. Know if you want hot soba or cold soba and order as soon as you're seated. Sometimes if you don't order right away, they let other tables that are ready order. This could mean that even if they were behind you in line, they could beat you and get the $10 bara chirashi set.
3. Ask for ocha (tea). It's free and goes so well with the meal!
You will love this place if you can get the $10 bara chirashi lunch set. I don't need to try anything else here, because there is no better deal that this!
