I wanted to try this place for months. Since this will be my last time in NYC at least for work, I thought it would be a great chance for a goodbye dinner with friends and cooworkers.
I'm a sweet plantains fan and a fried plantain expert so I asked both of them as a starter. They weren't the greatest starters I have had and I was a little disappointed about it because this a cuban restaurant and they are supposed to cook the best plantain but it wasn't the case.
Also I order camarones al ajillo which is shrimp and garlic sauce and once again I got disappointed because it was really greasy and over salty.
For dessert I asked for tres leches and I'm glad I did it because that baby made my night. One of the best tres leches I have had in my life. They serve it with berries (strawberries, blackberries) and also they add almonds which make a great combination of different flavors. I loved it!
The staff was really nice. I got my Yelp deal when I checked in and the environment tonight was great.
The patio is also one of the most beautiful views of the Hudson River.
Fortunately I got to see this place but I'm not sure if I would go again… Maybe I'd take an invite!! Haha
I came to Son Cubano for a private family event so I can't speak to a regular dining experience here. My feedback is mostly for the food, which I was pleasantly surprised to find very tasty! The mixed reviews here may have tempered my expectations, but I was impressed by their skirt steak and paella – two dishes that are easy to muck up, especially when making at a high volume.
Again, maybe it was due to this being an event, but I found the service to be very attentive and accommodating. I thought the bathroom attendant was a little overkill for a daytime thing, but I guess they really want to evoke a high-end atmosphere. Went home with tons of leftovers, which I enjoyed the next day!
I visited Son Cubano before the holidays to celebrate a family members birthday, apparently we chose the worst night as it was a time where every business was throwing their holiday parties.
As a result, we waited over an hour after our reservation time to be seated, it was kind of annoying.
When we finally got seated (practically on top of each other) we could barely hear our waiter as the music and talking was insanely loud in the restaurant. Keep it mind it was a Friday, so this may not happen on normal days.
The food did come out quickly, I chose the pernil and it was quite tasty, I really enjoyed the chorizo sauce that it was sitting in.
I was given a little bit of attitude for trying to use the check in offer for a free glass of wine but eventually they gave in.
3 stars for the average service, outrageous wait times and pretty decent food, perhaps check it out on a weekday and avoid all the aforementioned.
Son Cubano is a classy and sophisticated place that guarantees everything you would expect it to when walking in. The chandeliers and architecture of the environment are superb to look at and it is no wonder this is also a sought at place to host a private event.
We were seated in the back dining area and were entertained by a 3 person band that was playing beautiful and traditional Latin music. Although at times it was a bit loud and difficult to hold a conversation it was a great experience to be in an environment where this type of talent is putting on a show. The manager Josue was extremely pleasant and came over numerous times to check on us to see if we were enjoying ourselves. Josue along with the rest of the staff at Son Cubano deserve a 5 star review for themselves.
For appetizers we orders the Camarones al Alijo (Shrimp in Garlic Sauce) and Croquetas de Jamon. Both options were very good and cooked freshly. The Croquetas were dipped in a guava sauce which I wasn't too fond of in the beginning because I'm not a fan of guava (jelly type of sauce) but it worked out well.
Now for my two favorite parts of the evening: Dinner and Drinks!
For drinks we ordered Apple Martinis. I am not sure what the bartender puts in them or how they make it but every time I come to Son Cubano I always order the Apple Martini. It is the perfect concoction of apple pucker and alcohol. A few of these and you will get up and start dancing to that live band versus sitting down and watching them play.
I ordered the Roasted Pork made in a chorizo/corn stew with a side of white rice. Pork (pernil/lechon) is a very delicate dish to cook if done the correct way. A good tasting pork will be juicy, tender, and can be pricked off right with your fork. This pork blew my mind away. With every bite all the way to the bone it was tender and so full of flavorful seasoning. What made it better was the chorizo/corn stew it was sitting on. Not overdone with the chorizo is what made this stew the BONUS for the dish. I mixed it together with the white rice and long and behold I had a meal worthy of 10 stars. Even though I was beginning to get full I slowly finished every single piece of my dish all the way to the bone, literally.
If I could I would give Son Cubano 10 stars for their amazing and breathtaking decor, service, entertainment, drinks, and most importantly food!
3.25 to be exact.
Son Cubano is a beautiful place. The decor and location is top-notch, as it provides a beautiful view of the NYC skyline. This is a fancy place, so if you want, dress the part! It is a fairly huge place that provides valet parking since parking is hard to come by on the street. On the right now, they will have some good Latin music playing and the bar will be bumping!
I feel here though, you are mainly paying for the location. The food in general is not bad, but nothing special. You can get similar Cuban food at better quality for a fraction of the price. I got the Churrasco steak with yucca fries. The meat was a little dry. The side of Yucca fries I got though were cooked well and tasted great.
For dessert, my favorite dish was the Tres Leches cake. This is one dish I have had that is prepared well! They also had cheesecake which did not taste anything special, so I would defer back to the Tres Leches for my dessert cravings.
What definitely wins me over here is the decor and ambiance! The food may not be the best, but like I said, it is not bad either.
Son Cubano in West New York, NJ is mostly for the view of the NYC Midtown skyline. The food was ehhhhh, I actually thought the bocadillo appetizer was the best dish of the night. I got the ropa vieja thinking hey this is a Cuban restaurant you can't mess up a Cuban dish. The flank steak was dry and more oily than usual and too chewy. The drinks were the best part, it wasn't water down and they have a variety to choose from.
During our dinner the boyfriend and I felt a little rush in the beginning, I order some drink in a flute because after she said she will give us a minute or two to decide on the cocktail she was there within 30 seconds. I was like omg can I read your 20 different cocktails on this menu. Drinks were fairly priced but for the quality of the food it is too expensive.
The view is outstanding, you can't beat a NYC skyline during sunset. If you come here make sure to sit outside order some cocktails and appetizers because don't bother with the entrees and enjoy a beautiful summer sunset.
We just went in to check out the vibe and view. This restaurant/ lounge/ club was awesome. I loved the chandeliers and decor. I was empress with the grown and sexy fun atmosphere.
The Dj was doing his thing bringing the party to life.
I need to go back food looked delicious. This place came highly recommended from friends.
I would come back during the summer in order to enjoy eating outdoor with the spectacular view of the city.
So I had previously visited Son Cubano in the summer of 2014 for a birthday dinner. From what I remember it was great. I visited with a very large party. Good food . Service even better.
Today- I visited Son Cubano for brunch with a friend. I have to say my experience was interesting…
Service- Our waiter seemed as if he knew nothing about their menu. When I asked him questions he didn't know- he said he didn't know. Rather than going and asking someone he thought him not knowing was a fine answer. WRONG ANSWER!
But okay- whatever.
My friend and I order drinks. I cannot remember the name of the drink I ordered but she had the Strawberry Margarita. My drink was very tasty. My friend's drink was ew-okay.
We both ordered the Susan Pancakes. I've never had such tasty pancakes! One problem- I wish the serving size was bigger. Next time I'm ordering 2 Susan Pancake orders for myself 🙂 (yes they are that good).
So, with my Susan's I ordered a side of egg whites. Great! But, if you do not eat pork you should totally let them know. I don't eat pork. So when I bit into my egg whites I tasted a hint of bacon. Uncool if you're 1 Muslim and don't eat pork or 2 vegetarian 3 just don't want to mix gross meat juice with your eggs.
I must mention when ordering my friend and I had a slight problem with our order. But with complaining everything was fixed right away. I'm happy they resolve issues when brought to their attention. Very good at problem resolution ( a lot of places are not). Instead of giving 3 stars (which is what I thought of giving) I'm rating Son Cubano 4 stars because of their ability to fix things for customers when brought to their attention.
I look forward to brunching at Son Cubano in the near future.
