Loved it. After trying poke kitchen that is a few blocks away, I had low expectations for poke in NY but this place was solid. I can't say poke ever knocks me away with flavor but I love a good deal with interesting toppings and decent quality fish. Also I went around 5pm and there was almost no wait. I was in and out in less than 10 minutes.
I got the Fully Loaded Half+Half which is shown on the Yelp Menu but not on the printed ones in the shop. I got the salmon and tuna (they don't have a lot of options) and it came with avocado, edamame, garlic/ginger crisps, seaweed salad, tobiko, etc. It was a pretty hefty bowl that I didn't feel too guilty about dropping $20 for (especially in NYC). Everything worked together pretty well. Their poke sauce wasn't too overpowering, the rice amount was perfect, etc. I wish the rice was seasoned a bit more but other than that, I was more than happy with my meal.
A healthy fast food take on traditional Hawaiian poke. Given the recent popularity of poke places over the past year, I had to give one of these places a try.
Unlike traditional Hawaiian poke, there is no marinade, and there are a bunch of accompaniments like seaweed salad, cucumbers, fresh greens, etc. Atop a large portion of rice, the poke is more like one player in a medley than the shining main attraction of the dish.
That being said, the salmon we ordered was fantastically selected and prepared given the rapid turnout and streamlined process that is required of a bustling New York establishment. Slightly creamy and soft, it married well with the spicy mayo sauce. The accompaniments were well prepared and helped supplement the fresh feeling of the salmon.
Great introduction to poke into the main stage of American cuisine. Be prepared to pay a pretty penny and wait in line for this new fad!
Yaaas, this place is so good. I was a little apprehensive at first, not fully knowing what to expect from their poke, but Sons of Thunder has fresh fish and amazingly taste bowls. I came for a fast casual dinner but it seems like the perfect lunch spot if I worked closer: not too pricey, really fresh and tasty food, pretty guilt-free in the health department, and filling but not disgustingly so.
I dug the ahi tuna bowl with avocado ($1.75 extra) with shoyu, though I've heard the spicy sauce is good too, despite looking a bit too mayo-heavy for my taste. Dining in, I enjoyed the spacious back room with ample seating, including communal bench style which must be handy for the lunch rush. The space was bright and clean – also comforting when you're ingesting raw fish.
Eager to try the salmon (they have half/half bowls which is awesome) as well as their hot dogs (!) and fries, once they get them on the menu. Will update upon trying additional menu items.
Delicious! I was looking for a salad place near 39th and 2nd Ave. This place came up. While they don't have salads, per se, they have bowls with greens and poke and that's nearly…a salad.
I ordered the half and half – spicy ahi tuna and firm tofu – and added edamame. For about $12 in Manhattan it was priced right.
It was my first time there so just a note in case you've never been and you're not physically in the store since their menu online is confusing: the poke bowls all come with a bit of spring greens, seaweed salad and a touch of tobiko. When I told the cashier it was super confusing online if you've never eaten there before he was a little rude about it, like I should have known.
Also, if you're getting take out they gave me a knife and fork. Who doesn't want chopsticks for Asian food? I asked for chopsticks and he had to get them for me from behind the counter. Odd.
Was seeking a quality poke bowl and I definitely found it at Sons of Thunder. I found the bowl here to be superior to the other popular poke bowl location in Mid-town. The menu was simple without too many add-ons. I tried the Ahi, Salmon and Octopus. The Octopus was my least favorite and I would in the future stick with a two item combo of Ahi and Salmon. I added a bunch of extras to my bowl; all were delicious. Be warned the peppers can be very spicy so possibly ask for it on the side if you want to control the amount of heat in your bowl.
The location itself opens up with a skylight in the back and ample seating. Looking forward to returning so I can try a handmade milkshake with my next bowl.
I am just giving this place 4 stars purely because when I came there was NO WAIT. Like oh my god that have you heard that in the middle of the insane poke craze? So much time has been wasted waiting for ridiculous things that you would've never even cared about if not for social media…1.5 hours for rolled ice cream…..6 am cronuts..now at least an hour for poke…
The fish was fresh, overall this had more greens than the 3 other poke place I have been to, although I am much more partial to the Pokeworks crunchy /masago toppings and sauce.
This place is also a bit pricier than I remember pokeworks being. The size is comparable.
Either way, I enjoyed that this place was spacious, I could have food in my belly when I was starving, and got my salmon/tuna poke fix in a reasonable time.
The single best poke place I have ever tried, though my sample size was as small as three, with the other two being Wisefish and Pokeworks.
So similar to the other poke places, you pick the base first (son of thunder actually let you do half-half, which perfectly suits me as I would like both ahi tuna and the octopus), followed by any extra toppings (in my case, I picked the garlic crisps and the edamame, too bad they did not carry avocado any more…), rice type and lastly, sauce (loved their simplicity here – spicy or shoyu). Aside from fish poke bowls, sot also offers small side dishes, shakes and even beers.
The fish was marinated really well, octopus very chewy, and my added garlic simply made everything work together! Not a rice person, I even found myself in love with their brown rice. Cannot wait to try their shake options and even fries, which will be coming out soon.
Poke is popping up all over the city, it's a very delicious alternative to the standard "yawn" of a lunch. Not in the mood for another overpriced salad or more sandwiches? Fear no more. Hello poke!
The location is pretty convenient, close to where I have most of my meetings. Good because it's easy to get to, bad because it's easy to get to and it's not the cheapest lunch around. Coming around the lunch rush is asking for a wait, but if you are a late luncher like me (2pm or so), there probably won't be much of a line at all.
Pick your fishes (half and half is the way to go), get it with the standard set of toppings, and add anything else you want. The menu is pretty simple, which makes the ordering process rather simple. I added mandarin oranges and edamame, which blended nicely with the half salmon half tuna. I like to really taste the fish, so I went very light on the sauce. Nicely done.
There could have been more fish, but, then again, I always think there could have been more fish (especially for the price). I could get a bowl filled to the top and would probably think, "well, they could have added another scoop or two…"
Everything happens behind the scenes, so you really can't check and see if they are doing it wrong (perks of some other poke places) but so far, so good.
Come here for a very refreshing, filling (but not too filling) lunch or dinner, add a beer, then go home. Or go back to work. Or have another beer.
