Don't be intimidated by the hectic atmosphere when you come for lunch, the staff will take care of you and answer all your questions nicely. We came for lunch and after seeing the huge plates that were presented to others, we decided to share a lunch special plate and two empanadas. That's already way more than enough food for us.
The chicken and beef empanadas came out first while hot and crispy. Flavor was good, filling was plentiful, green sauce is not bad so you can fill up on just the empanadas alone.
But then out lunch special chicken plate came with the roasted chicken, plantains, and rice. Add a little green sauce for flavor, if you wish. There is already a lot of flavor in the food so you can't go wrong with the lunch special, especially at 10 bucks. Share the lunch with someone and you won't go back to work feeling bloated and lazy.
Worth the visit for plentiful food portions and decent prices.
This place is a gem in the heart of Wall Street. Came here a couple times during my stay in NYC and I was impressed both times with the food quality. The place is always busy especially during lunch hour so you can tell it's a popular spot. Only reason I don't give it a 5 is because they run out of things like rice and beans during those rush hours but other than that it's a must visit in NYC
I have been meaning to try this place since I started working in Downtown. Two lines, one for sandwiches and one for platters.. There were about 4 people ahead of me in line for platters, around 12:30 on a Wednesday. The tables/seats were about 1/2 full so a pretty decent crowd for lunch. I got the roasted chicken with yellow rice and black beans, for $9.99. They do take credit card minimum $10. I asked for green sauce as well, and they gave me 2 for my to go order. I got to work and dug in and loved every bite. The yellow rice had a good amount of flavor and was fluffy, beans were good but pretty typical taste, the chicken was tender and moist! The only bad would be that there wasn't much flavor in it until you add the green sauce… Next time I will probably ask for 3-4 green sauce. For the area I understand the price….but you can get these plates for $5-$6 when you are not in Manhattan. This will be a place I will come to when I am really craving this kind of food, but otherwise I will save a few $$ and stick to my spots in NJ. PS – portions were okay or I was just really hungry, but I finished the entire thing minus maybe 1/4 of the rice and beans.
Just like every other Sophie's, a great place for a hot and satisfying weekday lunch. Just like every other Sophie's, the line moves nice and fast even during peak hours. Just like every other Sophie's, just a smidgen expensive, but huge portions so you can stretch one meal into two. Just like every other Sophie's, it's pretty cruddy to eat inside; there are some tables, but really do yourself a favor and eat it outside, especially in such a naturally nice environment as the Financial District (note: mostly during summer.)
Overall, just like every other Sophie's, which is to say pretty nice!
Pick 2 sides. Rice, pulled pork and maduros. Overall, Sophie's hit the spot for comfort cuban food but I'm regretting the decision for lunch on day stacked with meetings. There's no doubt that I will need coffee. Rice is great, soft and flavorful but pools of oil formed before seeing the bottom of the plate. The pulled pork was nice but should be eaten with the onions or the salt will overpower. Obviously, dump *all* the green sauce on the plate–there's just no other way to eat this meal. Maduros were wonderful, perfect way to close out a comfort meal. Service was super fast (aka no frills), so perfect for a work day.
A co-worker recommended this place to me for good, cheap Latin American cuisine. As someone with an addiction to empanadas, enchiladas, and rice & beans… I was quick to try it out.
There's nothing particularly outstanding about this simple, basic little shop, but it has all the staples and at a very affordable price. The portions are huge and the food is hearty. I had a "side" of rice & beans (it was huge though, so I don't think "side" is the right word for it), and also a beef empanada. Both were quite good and filled my belly without taking a chunk from my wallet.
This is a nice lunch spot in the FiDi area. I plan to go back again and try out more options from the menu.
Been to different Sophie's a few times and I always get the baked chicken. It's juicy and well seasoned, but you definitely need the green sauce for the extra kick of flavor. Overall it's a good meal and they're consistent with the quality of food. The yellow rice, potatoes and the steamed veggies were just standard. Nothing to write home about. Would definitely return if I'm in the area. The cashier wasn't the nicest, a bit impatient when it wasn't even busy but it's not a deal breaker. Always ask for extra green sauce! The container they give you is way too small.
This place was HOPPING!!!
And now I know why.
It's flippin outstanding food. I don't get Cuban food back home, so this was a real treat. The to-go line was constantly full the whole time we were eating at our table. They must push a lot of people through this place everyday.
I enjoyed the various bean and rice side options. I like when there are choices!
The food was fantastic, I wish I could have more of it…
Ample portion size, as well.
A winner!
