I heard the hype and just needed to know for myself how good the soul food is at Southern Girls. I decided to take my daughter and a friend and her daughter. Southeast Queens is home to southerners and youll find alot of Mom & Pop restaurants in the area.
Southern Girls is located in the heart of Caribbean Central a.k.a Laurelton. Look for a burgundy awning and park along the One Way street. S.G features a newly renovated dining hall and take out counter. The dining hall has two sides and in my opinion is great to host a small party. They even have cute carpets with their logo! The design and layout was simple and modern.
The cashier advised us to choose our seat and we were greeted by a friendly waitress. We started off with glasses of Ol School Kool Aid and decided on the 8 piece Family Meal. Our 2 sides were cabbage and Macaroni and Cheese. The food arrived about 15-20 wait time which was great. Good food is not fast and fast food is not good.
Remember that.
A few items needed work. The mac n cheese should have been baked more and the cornbread recipe needs work. What hit home for me….THE FRIED CHICKEN!!!! Perfection! Crisp. Fresh and Juicy. My daughter loved it. No meal is complete without dessert. There was a plethora of options. The girls chose chocolate cakes. Both THICK like a southern womans figure. Delicious. Ill be back ladies.
Right in the heart of Merrick lies the fabulous Southern Girls Restaurant! They were gone for a few months but now they're back and they're better! Bigger space with the option of eating in.
Staff is super sweet and very friendly.
My mother and I ordered the chicken and waffles. ($8 each..not bad!) it came with 2 pieces of chicken on top of 2 Belgian waffles.
I'm quite impressed. The food waste tasty! My only con? Wished the chicken had more flavor. Other than that, it was crispy and fresh.
