Southwest NY

“Pretty good for what seemed to be a run-off-the-mill southern fusion restaurant in battery park city.”

“I've been here for lunch inside and happy hour drinks on the outdoor patio and each time had an overwhelmingly pleasant experience.”

“Pulled pork quesadilla (at waiter's recommendation) was one of the best dishes I've had since I moved to this city in late '13.”

  1. Had lunch here with a friend on Midsummer's Eve last summer, it was wonderful. We loved the modern decor and the fireplace, but chose outdoor seating because it was warm out. The contemporary cuisine is excellent, I ordered a mexican fondue, and my friend a chicken quesadilla. The quesadillas are grilled to perfection, and so is the cheese. Great, warm, atmosphere, and they even charged my phone for me!

  2. Thank you, food gods, for FINALLY giving me a decent place to satisfy all my brunch needs in my neighborhood. It's honestly been a long time coming, let me tell ya.

Immediately upon sitting down, my friends and I were given a basket of mini blueberry and cranberry muffins. I, of course, hoarded all the blueberry ones because I'm not the biggest fan of cranberry #sorrynotsorry. I am so glad I did because they were moist and delicious and I could have easily polished off at least a dozen of them. Such a perfect way to carbo-load and somewhat counteract (that's how I'm justifying eating so many at least…) all of the weekend's drunken decisions.

I ordered a pineapple juice and the Enchiladas Suizas, both of which were exactly what hungover me needed. Not only were the portions huge–you get 3 ginormous enchiladas–but they were so tasty. I was a huge fan of the creamy, green poblano sauce the dish was slathered in. Went perfectly with the side of white rice you were given.

Although I was quite disappointed in myself for not being able to finish the enchiladas, I was so pleased with the meal overall. I definitely plan on drunkenly stumbling into SouthWest NY for Mexican brunch nomz many, many Sunday mornings in the future.

  3. We had lunch here on December 30th. We really appreciated the clean restaurant, modern tables and decor, and the really cool fireplace.  We're from Florida, and basically, we were freezing our rears off….fire – good!

Now for the other good things… Guacamole is excellent!  We all ordered a different type of burger, and everyone thought they were very very good – about $14 to $16 depending on which one you order.

Grilled to perfection with really good fries.

They keep  Negra Modelo beer on tap….made me feel right at home, as I am originally from Texas – another plus. Bartender was friendly, and we stood near the bar to catch a bowl game while we waited for our food…

My girl and I went back without the kids and ate in the bar a couple days later…we ordered the pulled pork quesadilla, and a chicken quesadilla….both were absolutely fantastic, and you get a lot for your money.

If you check in there on Yelp, you get a free drink!

  4. I had lunch here with a small group of friends since it was only a couple blocks from our hotel and we had just arrived for the weekend. We shared the beef sliders, mushroom and goat cheese quesadilla, and roasted pork tacos. Everything was delicious and service was fine. They have a nice patio with umbrellas for shade. All of my friends raved about the grapefruit Heffeweizen, too.

  5. I came here in a group of 9 for a birthday dinner this past Saturday. It was surprisingly empty but perhaps it was because it was already 8:45pm. We were seated in the back and there was a really nice, warm breeze. I felt like I was in a resort in Mexico.

I ordered the prickly pear frozen margarita, which tastes like plain margarita. By the way I had no idea prickly pear is actually NOT pear! It was fairly strong and I already felt somewhat tipsy from it halfway through. I did not finish the drink because all the ice melted towards the end and it was gross. We ordered the el valiente guacamole which I really enjoyed. It definitely had a kick, maybe even two kicks. I ordered the mojo marinated skirt steak for my entree.

Despite ordering my steak in medium, it was more like medium-well to even well done. Nonetheless I thought the steak was tasty, especially since I dunked it with chimichurri sauce. Mmm, I love chimichurri. I didn't care for the mashed potatoes which actually tasted like sweet potatoes in my opinion. I tried my husband's spice rubbed NY strip steak and that was definitely way overcooked. It was also very bland and just not good at all. Poor guy, he was so disappointed he was still complaining about it the next day to me.

Even with all that I had a pretty good time, since I liked the ambience and was with awesome company. Our waitress was very nice although she did switched two of my friends' drinks. She did a good job overall handling out party size.

Shortly after I left the restaurant I started having stomach pains. We went straight home, getting home about an hour after eating. When I got home I was so nauseous and felt like I had to throw up. I had diarrhea. At some point I was walking across my room, I had a sudden wave of disorientation and confusion, and fell onto my floor where my husband found me when he heard the "thud." I felt fine the next day with just some mild queasiness in the belly. Honestly I have no idea what could have been the cause but it was very, very strange.

My husband had some uneasiness in the stomach that night as well but nothing aside from that. I had two friends who ordered the same skirt steak entree as me who didn't have any issues so… It's a mystery.

  6. Came for a lunch with coworkers on a Thursday at around noon. The place was pretty empty but our waitress seemed to neglect us most of the time. She was helping any table but ours most of the time.

I ordered the fish tacos. It wasn't very good. The fish (cod?) was dry, the mangos (which would have been a nice touch) were mushy, and everything else in there just made the hard taco shell soggy and really difficult to eat.

I wouldn't willingly come here again. I feel like this place is probably more for tourists wandering the area.

  7. Great for happy hour in Battery Park City.

Decent prices and tasty Tex-Mex food. Wide selection of mojitos, margaritas, and sangria. SWNY Nachos + White sangria pitcher on fleek.

The best part is the amount of seating- in the back room, fire place area, and patio. You can have private conversations but also mingle with others if you're interested.

It was not packed at all for happy hour but that means better service for me so I don't mind.

  8. Was going to give it four stars because of the pretty good pulled chicken tacos…but ordered it again today through seamless and they completely left out the guacamole so it was literally just chicken, a few pieces of leaves, and a sprinkling of cojito cheese. Despite me even explicitly saying extra guacamole if possible. And they also delivered pretty late. And the sweet potato fries turned hard. Pretty bummed because I was looking forward to this meal.
