One of the better food trucks in FiDi! Ordered the shrimp pita and it was a delicious, carb-y bomb of flavors. Comes with lots of tender whole shrimps, thick sauce/feta and fries. Definitely not the healthiest lunch in the world, but a worthy indulgence once in a while. For me it was just the right size: afterward I felt full but not too stuffed.
The line is also shorter than most of the other reputable food trucks in FiDi!
I stopped by the food truck on a Monday at 46th St. & 6th Ave.
For $6, you get a medium small pork gyro sandwich. Wonderful chunks of charred cubes of pork, roasted vegetables, and tangy yogurt sauce (a much better alternative than the mayo-based white sauces from Halal karts) wrapped in a pita.
Good for a light lunch, but I would recommend something more if hungry.
Lunchtime is my favorite time. So when I have a disappointing lunch my day is basically ruined. I might as well just go to bed and try again the next day.
Here's why the Souvlaki GR truck won't be ruining any more of my days:
1) The Chicken Pita Sandwich ($5) was too small. After finishing it in about 5 bites, I was neither still hungry nor full enough– this is the worst place to be. Do I get more food? Do I want to pay for a 2nd lunch? Am I hungry enough to get more food? I don't know!
2) It was stuffed with 3 random french fries. The fries were soggy from the tzatziki and they made the sandwich greasier than it needed to be. Either give me a real side of fries or put some veggies in there!
3) A salad ($8 +$2 for meat) costs more than a sandwich ($5). Ugh. This is why people are fat.
While walking back to my office, I passed by a Subway and literally thought, "I should have just spent that $5 on a footlong."
So sad.
I had tried another Greek food truck around Old Slip thinking it was them just rebranded but turns out they still around just not coming in as often? Anyway this was my first time at the Souvlaki GR truck and was looking forward to it. I had a chicken and pork pita for $10 total. Honestly I was hoping either it be a dollar or so cheaper or the pita bread be a bit bigger.
The food was good just felt it will be unsatisfying unless I get at least two. The meat was done really well though and I like how they added some greek fries to the pita wrap. So overall a 3 star rating its definitely an option when I'm craving souvlaki. I saw on a menu picture here on yelp taken back in 2010 where the prices was significantly lower. I guess that's inflation for you…
The $6 soulaki chicken sandwich has a nice taste but it is way tiny. As soon as I got my bag, I knew I was in trouble because it felt so light. It would rather pay a few bucks more and get something more substantive for lunch. Won't come back.
These guys seem to be at all food truck events, so I finally got around to trying them. The grilled pork pita is good, although a little bit dry. Generous portions though. The Greek fries (with feta), however, is made of the stuff you wake up at 2am craving.
Way better than I had anticipated! Came here for lunch on a weekday and there was no line at 12pm. I ordered the Gyro and the regular French Fries. Here's the lowdown:
Gyro – Had sliced beef and lamb, with red onions, tomatoes and tzatziki sauce. The serving size of the Gyro is probably sufficient for most people and it was quite filling. There was plenty of sliced meat inside and underneath the meat there was a healthy serving of tzatziki sauce. The sauce definitely was what put the flavors over the top, not to say the meat was not flavorful because it was really good, but the sauce absolutely brought it all together.
French Fries – Some might complain the fries are soggy, but they were fresh cut and just the way I like them. They definitely aren't your crunchy frozen fries. The guy in the truck put plenty of garlic seasoning on it which I loved! The fries are put into it's own separate bag (with the grease shining thru) and I was surprised at how much fries were in there. It was the perfect compliment to the Gyro and with the Gyro completely filled me up!
In closing, the service was quick. I saw them making the gyro from scratch, adding each ingredient delicately. It took about 5 minutes for them to complete the order. Definitely would like to come back and give them another try!
The "greek burger" is AMAZING! Although the portion size seems small, it's definitely substantial, like a little brick. Filled with two tart, tender, herbaceous Kofta Kababs, topped with tomatoes and tdzatsiki, I couldn't get enough of it, but a second order would have been way too much.
The "greek fries" are also delicious. Perfectly fried and salted, topped with mounds of spices feta cheese. If you get a sandwich as well, make sure you have a friend to share these with. As for the other sandwiches, the pork and chicken are good, I suppose, but the greek burger is where my attentions stay.
