Adorable little place! The interior is decorated as if you were in a courtyard outside (including a faux stairwell leading to a faux second floor door). The tables and chairs are little and round as if it you were sitting on a patio – but a bit wobbly and unsubstantial which resulted in us knocking down our water.
The staff is extremely attentive and very nice, and the large windows lend the space great lighting. Very intimate setting, definitely the kind of place I would take a friend for a catch up chat.
Food was great – we had some of the pita wraps. Lamb was very seasoned (perhaps a tad over-seasoned) but meshed well with the lighter cream sauce and potato pieces (an interesting addition to a pita wrap). Prices are reasonable on absolute terms (wraps are $6-9 and the full dishes are around $12-15) but the portions were a little disappointing.
Overall, very tasty food with a fantastic ambiance. A few rough edges but overall I'd definitely recommend.
The space is extremely cramped (but hey, theater district…). The chicken however, is DE-lish! Very good portions too, and nearly everything comes with pita bread, which is perfectly salted, served warm and can really fill you up (it's so tasty you'll definitely want to finish all!).
A fine pre-theater dining option.
Went here to grab dinner with a friend just before 7pm on a weekday. Thankfully we got there when we did because there was soon a line out the door waiting for a table.
First off, this restaurant has a great look to it–makes you feel like you're not in NYC for a moment, and rather in some street side cafe in Greece.
We decided to start off with the Prassini salad. Thought the feta was distributed a bit haphazardly, I actually really enjoyed the combination of flavors. It was also a good size and easily shared.
For the main meal, we decided to split the mixed meat grill for two. There is definitely a good amount of meat for two people. My favorite part of the dish was probably the grilled lamb chops as they were cooked perfectly and had a nice sweetness to them, though everything else was decently tasty as well.
To finish the meal, we each had a piece of the baklava. Though this wasn't one of the best desserts I've ever had, it was still pretty good–and sizable as well.
Overall, the atmosphere of this place was great and the food also hit high marks. At times, it seemed like the wait staff sort of forgot about us, as we had to wait almost 30 mins to get the final bill, but it was an enjoyable dinner nonetheless.
I'm a fan of the Souvlaki GR truck, so I was very excited when they opened a restaurant down the block from my office. It's located on a side street off 7th ave which is convenient–especially given the lame lunch options nearby–but otherwise unassuming. I didn't have time to shlep out for a meal but I saw you can use their site to order online directly, so myself and a coworker whom I owed a favor to placed an order. They gave a time 30 minutes in advance which isn't terrible, but I got there a few minutes early and it was already ready. The small place was also packed to the gills so apparently the word was out. They also had a bar which is worth noting to myself for the future.
The food was as good as I've come to expect from the truck. I got 2 chicken kebabs and a veggie kebab. The chicken was crisp, moist and with a bit of char. The veggies were soft, sweet and moist as well. I only wish the portions were a bit bigger for the money, but I can't argue with the quality. Maybe to compensate they also give you homemade pita bread and their addictive tzatziki sauce to dip it in. I'm pretty sure I could eat that stuff all day long if you let me. I can't wait to try the expanded menu. I will be back for a full meal.
This restaurant was highly impressive. I rate it 5 stars based on 3 categories.
People: The staff was helpful in suggesting some of their specialties. They knew when to be available without hovering throughout the meal.
Product: All of the menu items we tried were full of flavor and well presented. This was surprising considering the low cost of the entrees.
Ambiance: Souvlaki is very intimate and inviting. The interior decorations are simple but transports you out of downtown NY.
Came here today with a couple friends and ordered fries, melitzanosalata, a couple skewers and a couple pitas. Food was good and the restaurant is cute. Service was fine, a couple confusing convos about where the melitzanosalata dish was and this issue with locating a receipt – but kudos for the reassurance to have it straightened right away! Would stop by again for lunch.
I have been here twice! Once eating in, and the second taking out. Both I was extremely satisfied with!
– Hummus: very tasty hummus and comes with pita (although it's good enough to just eat with a spoon)
– Tzatziki: comes with Pita as well – very good, but it comes with almost every dish so I don't think it is necessary to get an extra.
– Tyrocroquettes: Cheese Saganaki with kasseri, kefalograviera and feta cheese – not sure what cheeses those are but this was big fried cheese balls. very good, but VERY heavy on the stomach! Definitely good to split with a few people (there were at least 6 on the plate)
– Chicken Individual Skewer: I thought it was good, but I was expecting a bit more. Not sure I'd order this again as there are so many more tasty items on the menu
– Greek Sliders: "specy feta" = TOP NOTCH. came with 4 sliders about 1.5 inches in diameter
Overall, I really enjoyed my meals here (and in takeout) and the service was very quick. I do have 2 qualms with the place (1) they did not pay attention to water glasses – so they stood empty for most of the time until we could get the waiter's attention (2) the portions are pretty small so when in doubt, order more!
Would definitely come back here!
I wholeheartedly adore this cute restaurant! I cannot wait to go back, especially since I found it by accident.
After almost stumbling onto the HBO series Girls set, experiencing the mini-Manhattanhenge, we found this place for delicious food.
Looking from the outside it it styled after a cafe in Greece, complete with white and blue decor reminiscent of Mykonos, Crete, or Santorini. Which is one of my top places to go to at least by next year! The inside is very small, you may end up sitting on top of someone's lap if you're not careful, but that just means you make new friends! It seems like a casual place however stepping inside makes you want to dress up a little. This is definitely a date place!
The bar is small, with enough room to sit comfortably but close enough to be intimate without trying.
We ordered the meat platter, which had a mix of pork, sausage, steak, lamb, and chicken. The lamb was delicious, like I was surprised it would taste so good! The portion size was for two and it was enough, we just got greedy by ordering another plate of pita because of how warm, buttery and scrumptious it was.
This place is on my radar and impressive!
