  1. I'm very sorry to start this off this way, but I am a very spoiled New York City transplant. When I lived in the city, there was incredible Indian food abound! So many good places, we were obsessed with it and chose it for dinner often. Upon moving to Tuckahoe, one of the first places we tried was Spice Village.

We actually went for Valentine's Day, because we don't really celebrate the holiday and so we went in ripped jeans and sweatshirts.

The staff needs a little help and the drinks are atrocious. Just FYI. I mean, the drinks are horribly undrinkable. I literally choked when my cocktail arrived. I tried wine after that and it was also gag-inducing. So I switched to water and was much happier.

Now that we got that out of the way, the food was good!! Not incredible-blow-your-mind-good, but I liked it. We ordered our usual, Saag Paneer, which was a bit more watery than it should be, but the flavors were there. Chicken Tikka Masala was pretty good too, exactly as it should be. The naan was awesome (how hard is that to screw up?) and the Tandoori Chicken, which was also tasty and flavorful. Even the rice was well moistened and plentiful.

I will say, the waiter should have been a bit more attentive, we had to keep asking for more water or rice, more than once. So that was a bit frustrating. But! The food was good, which is sort of the whole point, right?

A few weeks later, we thought we would order delivery! SInce the service blew the first time, but the food was so solid, we would have it delivered to our door. How Manhattan of us! It's like old times! Well, it was…awful. Nothing tasted even remotely close to what we had in the restaurant and we placed the exact same order. And it was a bloody fortune. Which we sort of knew, because somehow Indian cuisine is always expensive, but oh my god we wound up throwing out most of what we ordered, which totally broke my heart.

But because the food was so good in house, and because I am a fighter and will perservere in the name of dinner, we decided to order it again and go pick it up this time. We reasoned perhaps something was lost in translation on the delivery service. Maybe the food sat out because going out for delivery too long? Maybe it was messed up enroute to our home?

Armed with bravery, we drove over and picked it up. Took it home and excitedly dumped rice and then everything else onto my plate. Same order as last time.

Um…not as horrible as last time but not good either. If this had been the first time I ever experienced Spice Village, I wouldn't order again from them.

So, now we have to go back in person and see what's up. Because the first time it was so good! Which is what lead me to the middle of the road three star rating. I'm going to try it again in the name of spicy goodness and let you guys know.

So try it? Maybe shoot me a note telling me how it was for you? Opinions welcome! Let's solve this mystery.

  2. Nice Sunday brunch/lunch buffet, but the few times we've been we've noticed the quality going steadily downhill.

Only one, maybe two meat dishes. The buffet is not monitored very carefully and if you aren't there during the initial rush, the food begins to look stale and picked over and not kept cool or warmed enough depending on the dish.

The service is friendly but can lag a little bit and I have to note that the tables aren't always the cleanest.

We will visit at least once more, perhaps on a non-buffet day but my overall impression is that this is a restaurant in decline, both in quality and taste of food and attention by the owner/management.

  3. Me and my fiancee's favorite Indian spot. Consistently good food…spicy enough for a nice sweat but not too spicy where you need to douse yourself with a fire extinguisher. A "locals' restaurant, and although we are technically not in the neighborhood..def. worth the ten minute drive. The staff is always pleasant, only complaint is that the service can be very slow.

  4. Went here for lunch.
Lunch buffet was almost over so looked to order from main menu,
but not worth it since lunch buffet was still out and the waitstaff urged us to go with the buffet.
They added a fresh batch of Chicken Tikka Masala since there were only 2 pieces left.

    LUNCH BUFFET $10!

    Suggestions:
_ Go at the start of the lunch buffet so it's fresh and warm.
_ Only order the iced tea if you like a dark, unsweetened tea.

  5. Ordered take out today. Saw the buffet when we went in to pick it up and it looked delicious.

Food was ready really fast. Loved my lamb vindaloo and the people I was with loved their chicken tikka masalas. Asked for a container of yogurt sauce to go with my dish and we got 2 large containers of it. Woooo.

I'd come back and recommend others try it out!
