We went there for lunch . It was packed as they were having a birthday celebration BUT it did not deter to give us a great service. The hosts were nice. It does not give a great impression from outside but the ambiance is quite good. You can see the effort put into the decoration.
The food was also great. They serve the starters (which is a mini dosa) on the table. I went there for buffet . The buffet compromised of indian and indo-chinese cuisine. I liked the tandoori chicken.
The chicken gravy was also great. The noodles were also awesome.
Overall good food and good service !
5 stars.
I've always been a generous yelper in terms of awarding stars for restaurants but Spice Zone really did hit the spot.
Just as I was losing faith in Jersey Asian cuisine I decided to come here in a spur of the moment decision and it paid off big time.
You see, Edison (and New Jersey in general) seemingly has a lot of options for Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese food but I feel some of the restaurant owners are more hustlers trying to make a living than true restaurateurs. You gotta be careful as things ain't always as they seem. Allow me to embellish and draw basketball analogies to try to make my point.
Bad jersey Asian food is basically like the wack dude at the gym you made the mistake of picking to be on your team because he was wearing a Kevin Durant jersey. You then end up losing the game as he keeps bricking wide open shots and selling out on layups.
I have a theory on why Asian food out here in Jersey is generally not as good as it is in nearby NYC. New Jersey has more of a suburban atmosphere with less population density and not nearly as much internal restaurant competition as NYC. As we all know lack of competition leads to mediocrity.
Customers here probably have more of a mentality of "let's just feed the kids, honey, so they can go to Kumon later and then attend soccer practice." "yeah my pho only had one tough as leather piece of meat in it. It's all good, honey. Here's my credit card. Have fun at short Hills mall."
Whereas say in a place like Queens, NYC working class folks who demand more for their dollar won't put up with half assed cuisine (Edison Chinese food) or overpriced fluff (some Bergen County Korean).
I've lived in the Kips Bay/ Murray Hill area in Manhattan and have had the local Indian cuisine there. I feel that Spice Zone was as good or even better than some spots out there.
We had the classic Chicken Tikka Masala after the waiter recommended it to us for our curry craving. Everything about the dish was good. The curry and fresh tasting tomato in the sauce, the tender and tasty chicken. Having been kind of jaded with jersey Asian food I was kinda surprised in a good way after we tasted this dish.
The lamb Rogan Josh was a slow cooked lamb in rice with Indian spices dish served with yogurt. It too was delicious. I felt like I was transported to Jackson Heights Queens! The lamb was delicious and juicy but not stinky at all. The minty spices complemented the lamb and the yogurt complemented the spices to not make it too overwhelming. Great dish.
Samosa chat – Samosa with chick peas had a nice flavor if a bit strong and salty.
In the middle of our meal the restaurant filled up quick with patrons so that was a good sign. When we just walked in I was worried the place looked a bit like a fast food joint but turns out it has a nice upbeat atmosphere once you get used to it with Indian dance music videos and bollywood stuff playing on a TV and move decorations and lighting.
A very clean place, great variety, good service. I tried the paneer and rice and liked it!
Hope to return soon!
We came here on a whim when we wanted to have Indian somewhere we had not been before. The waiter was very friendly and attentive and the food was very good! I ordered the chicken vindaloo and husband ordered a lamb dish. We both enjoyed our meals and thought they were flavorful and delicious! My chicken vindaloo was spicy, which I love!
I tried some Indian soda with spices and was pleasantly surprised. We also ordered garlic naan and regular naan with our meals and the bread was a little TOO oily for my liking. The rice was fine. For dessert, I ordered the mini balls in the milk sauce (I forget what it's really called) and the Indian ice cream. I love the Indian ice cream and the sauce balls! Yum!
This place is A-OK!
This place really likes the gold theme. It's everywhere. When I first walked in to the restaurant on a cold, dark, rainy evening I thought I had teleported to a maharaja's palace in the daytime because of how bright it was. The place was immaculately clean and the service from the staff was second to none. They were really genuine in their welcome and I instantly felt at home. The wait for the food was not too long either. I got to enjoy the deliciousness very quickly.
Now since I love to try different dishes and discover new favorites I decided to forgo my usual staples and opted to order chana amritsari and lamb rogan josh with a side of their chili cheese naan. First off the chickpeas in the chana were done perfectly. It was in no way soggy or overcooked. The flavor was very distinct. I could taste the green chilies and even a hint of bay leaf, probably from the spice mix. I would not be a gentleman if I didn't warn you that this dish packs a punch. When it says that this dish is spicy, you better believe it is. Still a strong dish in my book. As for the lamb entree that one was my favorite. Since I love lamb I already hold some bias but this dish knocks it out of the park in flavor. It's a delicate blend of spices with the turmeric and cayenne heavily present. It's slow cooked so all those spices get into the very fiber of the dish and it just melts in your mouth like buttah! Yum-oh-yum indeed! I think I found a new staple in my repertoire. These two dishes were paired with some rice and chili cheese naan that was a welcome surprise. I could really tell that there were green chilies in the bread and the cheese gave it that fattiness to just dull the spiciness oh so delicately. I think I just wrote a thesis paper for culinary school the way I just described my meal, but that's how much I loved it.
It's great to discover a restaurant and be floored by the quality and flavor of their offerings. I decided to go out of my usual routine and order dishes that I normally don't order and as a result I was rewarded greatly. As for Spice Zone I reward them with a solid four stars for a fantastic meal.
They have an wesome mango lassi! That thing was mango, yogurty, condensed milk goodness… slammin'. The food was also very good.
As I've stated before, I'm not familiar with Indian food. This has been the third time that I've had Indian food in my life so well versed, I am not. The BF and I ordered a bunch of different things to try out. Chicken Tikka, Chicken Vindaloo, Some other grilled chicken thing, basmati rice w/ cumin, and an potato, corn and condensed milk appetizer. I personally wasn't too thrilled with the appetizer as the consistency was odd to me. It just didn't seem cooked all the way through and was still rather mushy in the middle. The BF really enjoyed it however. Chicken Tikka was a little too yogurty in my opinion but still not bad.
Waiters were nice, service was a bit slow, food took a while to come out, pacing was a little weird, but nothing horrible.
When we walked in, we were the only people in there that weren't Indian, so I take that as a good sign.
All in all, i'd definitely come back, especially for that lassi.
